Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating an attempted armed robbery that occurred at the Boston Market in the 3800 block of Aspen Hill Road in Silver Spring on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 8:16 p.m., the suspect entered the Boston Market, approached an employee at the counter and demanded money. When the employee failed to comply with the suspects demands, the suspect sprayed the employee in the face with pepper spray and then ran from the restaurant.  Detectives reviewed the surveillance cameras and obtained a suspect description.  The suspect is described as an unknown race male, approximately 20-years-old and 5-feet, 10-inches tall. He was wearing black goggles, a black mask, grey hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black and white Nike sneakers.


Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 3rd District Investigations Division are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who committed a commercial burglary of a restaurant in Silver Spring.

On September 19, 2023, 3rd District officers responded to the Dragon City in the 800 block of Sligo Ave., for the report of a burglary.   The investigation by detectives determined that the suspect shattered the front of the business with a brick and stole property.


Montgomery County Police responded to an incident involving a man threatening people with a machete on Tuesday, September 26 in North Bethesda. According to MCPD, “The call for a man with a machete was received at approximately 8:55 p.m. Officers responded to the 4800 block of Boiling Brook Pkwy and located an adult male with a machete. He was quickly taken into custody without incident.  No victims were located and no injuries were reported.” We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.

Safety reported Cordell Pugh reported the following on Twitter: “NORTH BETHESDA MACHETE MAN: ~9PM Thursday, shops off Boiling Brook Pkwy East of Parklawn Dr. Security called for Police assistance with a man threatening people with a machete. @MCPnews (@2DCommander) Officers rapidly located suspect & safely detained him without incident.”


Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office: On Aug. 18, 2023, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies responded to a call for service of a residential burglary in the Urbana area of Frederick County, Maryland. FCSO detectives discovered that, during the burglary, suspects stole approximately $3 million in jewelry from the victim’s home.

Through a thorough investigation, FCSO Detective Josh Stears and members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Baltimore were able to identify two suspects who reside in Las Vegas and had traveled to Frederick during the time of the burglary.


Per the Maryland Attorney General’s Office: “Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown today released a revised interim Attorney General’s Report on Child Sexual Abuse in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The revised interim release, as authorized by the August 16, 2023 Order of the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, removes some redactions that the court had previously ordered in this Office’s initial interim release on April 2023.


Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland – U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis today sentenced Jose Rafael Ortega-Ayala, a/k/a “Impaciente,” age 30, of Greenbelt, Maryland, to life in federal prison for racketeering and murder in aid of racketeering conspiracies, for committing murder in aid of racketeering, and for conspiracy to destroy and conceal evidence connected to his participation in La Mara Salvatrucha, a transnational criminal enterprise also known as MS-13.  The charges related to the murder of a victim believed to be cooperating with law enforcement and the subsequent cover-up of the murder.  Ortega-Ayala was convicted on December 16, 2022, after a two-week trial, along with co-defendants Jose Domingo Ordonez-Zometa, a/k/a “Felon,” age 33, of Landover Hills, Maryland and Jose Henry Hernandez-Garcia, a/k/a “Paciente,” age 29, of Annandale, Virginia.

According to evidence presented at trial, MS-13, one of the largest street gangs in the United States, is a national and international gang composed primarily of immigrants or descendants from El Salvador and other central American countries.  Branches or “cliques” of MS-13, operate throughout the United States, including in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.  Ortega-Ayala and his co-defendants were members and associates of the Los Ghettos Criminales Salvatruchas (“LGCS” or “Ghettos”) clique of MS-13.


The investigation has determined that the two suspects approached the 77-year-old victim as he was getting out of a gray 2018 Toyota Corolla and demanded his wallet and car keys. The suspects hit the victim, stole his property and car keys and drove away from the scene in the victim’s car.


On Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at approximately 10:50 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the Pizza Castle restaurant in the 11270 block of New Hampshire Ave. for the report of a burglary that occurred earlier.


Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia: A government contractor is charged by criminal complaint, unsealed today, with espionage. Abraham Teklu Lemma, 50, a naturalized U.S. citizen of Ethiopian descent living in Silver Spring, Maryland, is charged with gathering or delivering national defense information to aid a foreign government; conspiracy to gather or deliver national defense information to aid a foreign government; and having unauthorized possession of national defense information and willfully retaining it.

Lemma worked as an IT administrator for the Department of State, and as a Management Analyst for the Department of Justice. In those positions, Lemma was granted a TOP SECRET security clearance and granted access to classified systems. According to the criminal complaint, between December 19, 2022, and August 7, 2023, Lemma copied classified information from Intelligence Reports and deleted the classification markings from them. Lemma then removed the information, which was classified as SECRET and TOP SECRET, from secure facilities at the Department of State against protocol. The materials related to a specific country and/or geographic region. Lemma accessed, copied, removed, and retained this information without authorization.


At approximately 1:31 a.m., today, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Costco Distribution Center, 5236 Intercostal Drive, in Monrovia, Maryland, for a welfare check. The initial call was a truck driver seemed under the influence and had broken out the window of their own tractor.

Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office: “Upon arrival, FCSO deputies contacted the suspect, an adult male, who was in the driver’s seat of his tractor with it running at the entrance to the Costco Depot. The male was argumentative and did not want to speak to deputies.


Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland – A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Jalen Thomas Kelley, age 21, of Abingdon, Maryland, for aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse and assault within the territorial jurisdiction. Kelley was arrested by the FBI Charlotte Field Office in Wingate, North Carolina, on September 20, 2023.

According to the indictment, between January 1, 2023 and January 2, 2023, the defendant engaged in a sexual act by force and assaulted Victim 1 without consent on board a cruise vessel Carnival Legend, which had a scheduled departure from and an arrival in Baltimore, Maryland.
