Growing up in Montgomery County in the 1980s it seemed as if there was a sports card show every weekend. Reading the back of Beckett you’d see listings for events in Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, Rockville and a few other places. But now there is just one. The Mid-Atlantic Sports Card Show is a semi-annual one-day show created by Ryan McCormick. The next one is this Saturday, May 18th from 9:30 AM to 3 PM at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

The Washington Spirit and ESPN 630 will team up to broadcast 13 regular season matches in the Spirit’s first-ever radio partnership, the club announced today. The partnership will begin on Saturday, May 18 when the Washington Spirit faces Angel City FC and will extend throughout the 2024 season. Match audiocasts will stream live directly to WashingtonSpirit.com, as well as the ESPN 630 app and website.

On a recent trip to Springfield, Massachusetts I decided to swing by the Basketball Hall of Fame. It was either that or the Dr. Seuss Museum. I’d been to both before but figured it was time to return to the hoops hall to highlight basketball luminaries with Montgomery County and other local ties. The Commanders have the second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and it’s almost certain that the team will be drafting its future quarterback with the pick. With less than two weeks until the draft, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter seems to believe the pick will be Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels out of LSU.

John Carlson is expected to play in his 1,000th career game tonight against Boston. According to the Washington Capitals, Carlson will become the first defenseman and third player in franchise history to play 1,000 games with the Capitals, joining teammates Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Carlson is also a Montgomery County resident and his wife, Gina, is a MoCo native.
