Armed Carjacking Suspect Arrested

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 31-year-old Freddy Obi with an attempted armed carjacking and strong-arm carjacking, both of which occurred on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, in the Burtonsville and Silver Spring areas.

At approximately 6:13 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 14900 block of Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville for the report of an attempted armed carjacking. Unable to take the vehicle, the suspect was observed leaving the scene in a white Ford Fusion with significant damage to the back bumper.

MCFRS Respond to Collision With Entrapment Early Sunday Morning

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision with entrapment on Sandy Spring Rd and Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville on Sunday, September 17, around 1am. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, one adult was transported to the hospital with trauma. We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.

Hybrid Public Meeting on the Old Columbia Pike / Prosperity Drive Improvements Project in White Oak to be Held on Wednesday, September 27

Per MCDOT: On Wednesday, Sept. 27, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a hybrid public meeting to discuss the latest progress of the Old Columbia Pike / Prosperity Drive Improvements project in Burtonsville. The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments.

The Old Columbia Pike / Prosperity Drive Improvements project provides for a facility planning study to enhance safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and people with disabilities as they travel to nearby schools and facilities, and improve intersection safety and capacity issues. Drainage issues within the project limits will also be addressed. The project limits are from Stewart Lane to Cherry Hill Road. Public input is encouraged and may influence the design of this project.

507 Vehicles Stopped, 3 Arrested During September 2 Sobriety Checkpoint

Montgomery County Police has announced that during a September 2nd sobriety checkpoint on Columbia Pike and Dustin Rd in Burtonsville, officers from MCPD and allied agencies stopped approximately 507 vehicles and arrested 3 people for driving while impaired. During an August 25 sobriety checkpoint on northbound Georgia Avenue at Weller Road in Wheaton, MCPD stopped approximately 372 vehicles and arrested 5 people for driving while impaired and during an August 18th sobriety checkpoint on northbound Frederick Road at Game Preserve Road in Gaithersburg police stopped 565 vehicles and arrested 4 people for driving while impaired.

In July, recreational marijuana use became legal in the state of Maryland and Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones issued the following reminder before the July 4th weekend, “We implore drivers to think of cannabis the same way they think of alcohol. Do not get behind the wheel of a car if you are impaired. Our officers will pull over and arrest anyone they suspect of driving while impaired. Alcohol, marijuana and other drugs can impair the ability to drive because they slow coordination, judgment, and reaction times. Our priority is keeping the roads safe for everyone.”

32nd Annual Burtonsville Day Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 23, Will Celebrate ‘Discovering East County’

Per Montgomery County: The 32nd Annual Burtonsville Day Parade and Festival on Saturday, Sept. 23, will celebrate the theme of “Discovering East County.” The festivities will include three musical performances in association with the Music Center at Strathmore. The one-mile parade will begin at Paint Branch High School and conclude at the Marilyn J. Praisner Library and Community Recreation Center, which is located at 14906 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville. The festival will follow from 11 a,m.-3 p.m. on the grounds of the community center.

The festival will include performances of music, dance and martial arts. Among the performers will be the Dupont Brass, Ayo and Deborah Bond. Food trucks and vendors featuring a variety of hometown favorites, international cuisines, crafts and exhibitors will be part of the festival. There will be activities for children and information about services offered by Montgomery County including regarding public safety. Local nonprofit organizations will be represented and organizations offering health screenings will be present.

MoCo Native Brings 2v2 Basketball Tour Event to Paint Branch High School on Saturday, September 2

A couple years back we let you know of MoCo resident Jonathan Mensah, who created the All In Summer Tour– a platform that allows some of the best basketball players in our area to go head to head while crowds watch the games in person or through Instagram. Now, he has brought together Seneca Valley legend Bruce Massey Jr. And a Prince George’s County’s Kevin Kuteyi aka “Uncle Skoob” for a 2v2 tour event that will take place at Paint Branch High School on Saturday, September 2 from 2pm-7pm.

Mensah tells us he wanted to bring his tour back to its roots with 2v2 basketball, moving away from the 1v1 games for now. He is opening things up to all area basketball players who simply have to comment or send a DM in order to be invited to play (@all_in_summer_tour). Saturday’all event is free for the community.

$3.5 Million in Funding Approved for the Burtonsville Crossing Shopping Center

Per the Office of Senator Craig Zucker: Today, the State Board of Public Works released $3.5 million in funding dedicated to the redevelopment of Burtonsville Crossing Shopping Center. The District 14 Legislative Delegation, consisting of Senator Craig J. Zucker, Delegates Anne Kaiser, Bernice Mireku-North, and Pamela Queen, requested that the funding be secured after hearing the community’s visions for the future of the space. The team appreciates the Board of Public Works’ decision to release the funds, allowing renovations to begin.

“We are very pleased with today’s Board of Public Works vote to release the $3.5 million in funding for this project, said Senator Zucker and Delegates Kaiser, Mireku-North, and Queen. “East County is a diverse area, and this funding represents the beginning of a more significant commitment from the District 14 team, the State of Maryland, and Montgomery County, are going to put into this project. The people of Burtonsville and East County deserve a world-class shopping center, and we are glad we helped make this a reality.”

Police and Family Searching for Missing 16-Year-Old

The Special Victims Investigations Division is asking for the public’s assistance in locating, Jozlynn Sanderson, a missing 16-year-old from Burtonsville. Sanderson was last seen on Saturday, August 21, 2023 at approximately 3:30 p.m., in the area of Scarlet Sage Court in Burtonsville/Silver Spring. She is 5’2″, 130 lbs., with black hair styled in two pony tails, brown eyes and was last seen wearing a black ribbed turtleneck sweatshirt, black Nike shorts, and white Air Force 1 sneakers with white socks.

Ulta Signs on as Newest Tenant at Burtonsville Crossing

Ulta is listed as the newest tenant for the Burtonsville Crossing Shopping Center that’s currently being renovated. The center will be home to Montgomery County’s first Sprouts grocery store, which is on pace to open by the end of this year. It will also be home to Domain Fitness & Performance, an upcoming TJ Maxx location, and Creative Outlets Arts Center which recently announced that they’ll be moving into the shopping center from their previous Montgomery Mall location that closed in Bethesda earlier this summer. EDENS is also likely to receive a $3.5 million grant to renovate and revenant the shopping center.

Ulta opened 47 new stores in 2022 and renovated or relocated 32 stores, according to its 2022 fiscal year-end earnings call. The brand is known for its variety of beauty and skin care products ranging from entry level brands to prestige lines, allowing customers to try from the least expensive brands to top line brands all under one roof. The company saw growth throughout 2022 and expects the same in 2023 with plans to open another 25 to 30 more new stores and provide facelifts to or relocate another 20 to 30, according to Ulta CEO Dave Kimbell. These additional storefronts are above and outside of the plans to expand its shop-in-shops with Target. An opening date for the Burtonsville Crossing location is not yet available.
