Per the Office of the United States Attorney, District of Maryland: MS-13 member Kevin Alexander Castillo Calderon, a/k/a “Fantasma,” “Ghost,” “Eterno,” and “Josue Argueta Gonzalez,” age 25, of Colesville, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to a racketeering conspiracy, including a murder.
According to court documents, the La Mara Salvatrucha gang, also known as “MS-13,” is an international criminal organization composed primarily of immigrants or descendants of immigrants from El Salvador, with members operating in the State of Maryland, including Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and Frederick County, as well as throughout the United States. In Maryland and elsewhere, MS-13 members are organized into “cliques,” smaller groups that operate in a specific city or region. MS-13 members are required to commit acts of violence, both to maintain membership and discipline within the gang and against rival gangs. One of the principal rules of MS-13 is that its members must attack and kill rivals, known as “chavalas,” whenever possible. Participation in criminal activity by a member, particularly in violent acts directed at rival gangs or as directed by gang leadership, increases the respect accorded to that member, resulting in that member maintaining or increasing his position in the gang and opens the door to promotion to a leadership position.
Peri Peri Original & Kallisto Steakhouse is now open in the space that was previously home to Pollo Mex at 13436 New Hampshire Ave in the Colesville Center. Pollo Mex closed last summer after 12 years in the location. Items at Peri Peri Original include wings, coconut shrimp, flame-grilled chicken, pita sandwiches, wraps, smash burgers, and tacos. Kallisto Steakhouse, a concept by the owners of Peri Peri Original, will be joining Peri Peri in the restaurant space, but items from its menu are currently unavailable.
Peri Peri Original is an international chain that has over ten locations in Virginia and Maryland, as well as an additional location coming to Rockville (location not yet available). “Peri Peri chicken is marinated for 24hrs in our unique Portuguese Peri Peri sauce flamed grilled for serving from the spice selection of your choice.” The first United States location was opened in 2018 in Alexandria, Virginia. Kallisto Steakhouse was launched in 2020 in Herndon, VA. “Impatient and unsatisfied from the unavailability of true steak parlors and appropriate cuts under Halal sector, company leaders took a daunting and brave step to take the reins in their hands and inaugurated the operations with the deep vision on providing excellence around the principles of 3Ps – people, process and product. Per Montgomery County: A series of Summer Shady Hikes organized by Montgomery Parks will help people stay active in August, despite the heat. The hikes will be especially geared to help beginning hikers. The three hikes in August, designed for ages 8-and-older, wlll take place from 6-7 p.m.

Kats Kitchen and Company signage is up in the window of 12854 New Hampshire Ave, previously the home of Dominic’s Italian Grille. Dominic’s closed permanently in January. In December 2022, we received confirmation that the owners of Dominic’s would no longer be opening the new concept, Bourbon, Wings and Beer at the previous home of Buffalo Wings and Beer in Cloverly.
Currently, not much is known about Kat’s Kitchen and Company, but a martini glass is adorns the sign that’s placed in the window of the restaurant, so a bar is likely to remain at the location. We’ll have additional information as soon as it’s available.

Montgomery Parks is postponing the community meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 6, 2023, about plans to develop a disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park. The meeting is being postponed due to health reasons. A new meeting date will be announced soon. We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause.
Montgomery Parks will hold a community meeting from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, at the National Capital Trolley Museum in Colesville to share information about a proposed disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park. The planned disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park will be the first 18-hole course in Montgomery Parks.

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a robbery that occurred on Sunday, May 7, 2023. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them.
The initial investigation has revealed that two suspects entered a restaurant in the 11200 block of New Hampshire Avenue, jumped over the front counter, displayed a gun and ordered the employees to the back of the store. One of the suspects then dragged an employee through the business to where the safes were located. The suspect demanded that the first safe be opened. The victim complied with the suspects’ demands. The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of money. When the victim was unable to open the second safe, the suspect began to strike the victim in the head with his hand and his gun. The suspects then left the scene in a red Mitsubishi Lancer.

Charley Prime (Rio/Gaithersburg): Permanent signage is up at Charley Prime Foods, the new restaurant from Jackie Greenbaum & Gordon Banks (Little Coco’s, El Chucho, Bar Charley, Quarry House Tavern) that will be replacing Tara Thai on the Rio Lakefront boardwalk at 9811 Washington Blvd in Gaithersburg. The restaurant is expected to open this spring.

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 15-year-old from the Colesville area of Silver Spring.
Jennifer Orellana was last seen on Friday, April 14, 2023, at approximately 10:00 a.m., in the 1600 block of Northcrest Drive. Jennifer Orellana is approximately 5-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. Jennifer has brown eyes and shoulder length hair which is dyed red. Jennifer was last seen wearing a black shirt, a black sweater, checker pants with purple lines and white/purple sneakers. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

MoCo Directory highlight: Drs. Eric and Kevin Chai of Colesville Dentistry were born and raised in the Silver Spring area. Eric graduated from Paint Branch High School and attended the University of Maryland, College Park where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Maryland Dental School in 2014. Kevin graduated from Blair High School and then went on to the University of Maryland, College Park, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Maryland Dental School.
The brothers now operate Colesville Dentistry at 724 Cloverly Street in Cloverly/Silver Spring where their mission is to give every patient the best experience possible by providing comfortable, compassionate and comprehensive dental care.
