Police and Family Searching for Missing 16-Year-Old

The Special Victims Investigations Division is asking for the public’s assistance in locating, Jozlynn Sanderson, a missing 16-year-old from Burtonsville. Sanderson was last seen on Saturday, August 21, 2023 at approximately 3:30 p.m., in the area of Scarlet Sage Court in Burtonsville/Silver Spring. She is 5’2″, 130 lbs., with black hair styled in two pony tails, brown eyes and was last seen wearing a black ribbed turtleneck sweatshirt, black Nike shorts, and white Air Force 1 sneakers with white socks.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Jozlynn Sanderson is asked to call Montgomery County Police Non-Emergency (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line).

Burger King To Open Soon in Cloverly

Last summer we let you know that Potomac Foods Group leased part of the parking lot from the property owner, Safeway, at 15411 New Hampshire Ave to build a new Burger King restaurant (with drive-thru). Demolition of the previous bank building occurred in early 2022 and construction has been ongoing ever since. After a few delays, it appears the restaurant is ready to go and will be opening very soon (photos below). An exact date is not yet available.

The process for Burger King coming to the shopping center included Safeway applying for a reduction in the number of parking spaces required for the Safeway store. A parking waiver is needed because removing the parking spaces necessary to build the new Burger King will reduce the number of parking spaces for Safeway below the minimum required by the Zoning Ordinance. Safeway filed the amendment requesting to remove the parking easement on the Burger King site and was eventually approved after the initial application was filed a couple years back.

Progress at Kat’s Kitchen and Company in Colesville

In June we let you know that Kat’s Kitchen and Company signage is up in the window of 12854 New Hampshire Ave, previously the home of Dominic’s Italian Grille, which closed permanently in January. Permanent signage is now up and Google lists August 29th as the opening date for the restaurant (photo below). After stopping by today, it appears more work needs to be done and the restaurant’s hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) isn’t taking place until Thursday, September 7th, so it’s likely the opening may take place later than Google suggests.

There is still not much known about Kat’s Kitchen and Company, but a martini glass is adorns the the logo, so a full bar will be included in the plans. We have left a message with the phone number listed on Google and are awaiting to hear back for additional information.

Ulta Signs on as Newest Tenant at Burtonsville Crossing

Ulta is listed as the newest tenant for the Burtonsville Crossing Shopping Center that’s currently being renovated. The center will be home to Montgomery County’s first Sprouts grocery store, which is on pace to open by the end of this year. It will also be home to Domain Fitness & Performance, an upcoming TJ Maxx location, and Creative Outlets Arts Center which recently announced that they’ll be moving into the shopping center from their previous Montgomery Mall location that closed in Bethesda earlier this summer. EDENS is also likely to receive a $3.5 million grant to renovate and revenant the shopping center.

Ulta opened 47 new stores in 2022 and renovated or relocated 32 stores, according to its 2022 fiscal year-end earnings call. The brand is known for its variety of beauty and skin care products ranging from entry level brands to prestige lines, allowing customers to try from the least expensive brands to top line brands all under one roof. The company saw growth throughout 2022 and expects the same in 2023 with plans to open another 25 to 30 more new stores and provide facelifts to or relocate another 20 to 30, according to Ulta CEO Dave Kimbell. These additional storefronts are above and outside of the plans to expand its shop-in-shops with Target. An opening date for the Burtonsville Crossing location is not yet available.

EDENS Expected to Receive $3.5 Million Grant For Burtonsville Crossing Renovations

Last month we showed you some of the progress EDENS continues to make at Burtonsville Crossing. Sprouts, the first business announced as part of the renovated shopping center, is on track to open by the end of this year. Sprouts was the first to sign a lease for the renovated Burtonsville Crossing and will be opening the grocery chain’s first Montgomery County location in the shopping center. Now, EDENS is expected to receive a $3.5 million grant towards the renovations, according to a report by Maryland Newsletters. “The state Board of Public Works takes up the grant, aimed at renovating the Route 29 center that has lain dormant for years, this month. Edens first signed grocery store Sprouts for about 23,000 feet, then added T.J. Maxx and more recently, Domain Fitness & Performance, for 32,100 feet.”

Former NBA player Jason Miskiri is part of a group that will be opening Domain Fitness & Performance, a new fitness center that has signed on to open in the shopping center and will be located adjacent to Sprouts. Miskiri also owns several restaurants in Silver Spring, including the Angry Jerk, The Breakfast Club, and Society Restaurant & Lounge. A representative from EDENS also confirmed to us that TJ Maxx will be opening a location in the shopping center in 2024. In addition to TJ Maxx, Creative Outlets Arts Center has announced that they’ll be moving into the shopping center from their previous Montgomery Mall location that closed in Bethesda last month. Ulta has also recently signed on to become the newest tenant at the shopping center. Progress video from last month can be seen below.

WSSC Issues Warning For Anyone Who May Have Come in Contact With T. Howard Duckett Reservoir Water

WSSC Water has detected high concentrations of blue-green algae, known as a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB), in the T. Howard Duckett Reservoir. These HABs can cause adverse health effects. The reservoir, located along the Patuxent River in Montgomery, Prince George’s and Howard counties, serves as a drinking water source for WSSC Water and a recreational area for hiking, fishing and boating.

The on-going Health Advisory for the Triadelphia Reservoir remains in effect. WSSC Water’s drinking water is not affected and continues to meet all Safe Drinking Water Act standards. As a precaution, WSSC Water is closely monitoring water quality conditions at its Patuxent Water Filtration Plant. Visitors to WSSC Water’s T. Howard Duckett Reservoir should do the following:

DHCA: Unprecedented Three-Pronged Approach to Funding Neighborhood Revitalization Launched With $3.7 Million for White Oak Façade Improvement Initiative

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs (DHCA) has launched a unique, three-pronged approach to neighborhood revitalization by combining State and County funding, along with a financial commitment from local businesses and property owners, to kick-off a community improvement initiative in White Oak.

The White Oak Façade Improvement Initiative is public-private partnership that will combine an estimated $3.7 million to enhance and modernize an aging commercial area along a stretch of Lockwood Drive at New Hampshire Avenue. The goal of the project is to make highly visible improvements that will address physical and economic decline in the area to attract more consumers and foster economic growth.

Jolloff Etcetera is Open in White Oak

Jolloff Etcetera recently opened at 11237 New Hampshire Avenue, which was the longtime home of Hunan Manor (there for 20 years by most recent ownership group) until it closed permanently in February 2022. The restaurant is located in the White Oak Shopping Center near Dollar City and Montgomery County liquor store.

Jolloff Etcetera offers Nigerian cuisine and opened its first location in nearby Hyattsville, MD (Prince George’s County). The menu offers a variety of Nigerian cuisine, including Jolloff rice, grilled fish, fried rice, multiple soups, and more. Featured photo courtesy of Jolloff Etcetera.

New Acting Principal Begins Today at Paint Branch High School

Pam Krawczel starts today as the acting principal of Paint Branch High School (14121 Old Columbia Pike) in Burtonsville. Dr. Joel Beidleman, who was promoted to the Paint Branch principal position in June, was placed on an extended leave earlier this month after a Washington Post article alleged that he was reported to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) 18 times in seven years for alleged sexual harassment, workplace bullying, and other inappropriate conduct at multiple schools. Krawczel was previously the assistant principal at Wheaton High School and recently completed a principal internship at Damascus High School, according to a report by Moco360.

Damascus High School sent the following community message the DHS community: “We would like to congratulate Ms. Pam Krawczel, who has been named the Acting Principal of Paint Branch High School. We are very happy for Ms. Krawczel and thank her for her work at Damascus High School. We will be interviewing for a new assistant principal and will update the community on that position as soon as we are able.”

Detectives Investigating August 7 Shooting; Reward of up to $10,000 Offered for Information

Approximately 10:09 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the location for the report of a shooting. The investigation has revealed that an adult male victim was in front of the apartment building when he was shot twice in the torsoby an unknown suspect. The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Officers also determined that three apartments were also struck by gun fire.

Statement from the Montgomery County Board of Education Regarding Sexual Harassment Allegations

On August 4th, an email was sent to the Paint Branch High School community informing them of the school’s principal, Dr. Joel Beidleman, going on extended leave. Beidleman was named principal at Paint Branch in June and was previously principal at William Farquhar Middle School in Olney. On August 11th, the Washington Post released an article alleging that Beidleman was reported to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) 18 times in seven years and details alleged sexual harassment, workplace bullying, and other inappropriate conduct at multiple schools, spanning over a decade. The article states that Beidleman was placed on leave by MCPS and that the school system will launch an “independent, external investigation.”
