Plan seeks to improve transit access, housing and shopping options, and pedestrian connections along U.S. 29/Columbia Pike; community invited to continue to participate during Planning Board public process

The Montgomery County Planning Department will present the Working Draft of the Fairland and Briggs Chaney Master Plan to the Montgomery County Planning Board during its weekly meeting on Thursday, March 23. During this meeting, the Planning Board will have the opportunity to provide initial feedback, accept the Working Draft Plan as the Public Hearing Draft, and set the date for a public hearing to receive additional community feedback. This is the first step prior to the Planning Board conducting work sessions to review and revise the draft plan and then submitting the draft plan to the County Council for its public review and final approval.

Friends of White Oak and Councilmember Kristin Mink are asking the White Oak community (and surrounding areas) what they would like to see in the location that was previously home to Sears in the White Oak Shopping Center. Sears closed its White Oak location in 2021.

“Friends of White Oak is working to increase commercial and residential development, existing infrastructure and opportunities can make the community a prime hub for business development and economic expansion. This survey aims to engage the community and gather input about what can be done with the Sears building in the White Oak Shopping Center. A pedestrian was struck and killed on Columbia Pike at Stewart Lane on Thursday, March 16. According to Montgomery County Police, “At approximately 1:28 p.m., an adult male was crossing the northbound lanes of Columbia Pike in a westbound direction when he was struck by a Ford Explorer traveling northbound. The driver remained at the location and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.” MCPD will issue a news release as more information becomes available, including the name of the deceased.

Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 2:12PM: “All lanes at northbound 29 at New Hampshire Ave. are closed. All southbound lanes of 29 are open. Drivers can use Old Columbia Pike as an alternate route to continue northbound on 29. Expect significant delays.” We will post an update when additional information is available.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to the scene of a brush fire at 300 Scott Drive, near Vierling Drive, in Colesville on Wednesday evening. According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, approximately 30 firefighters, four fire engines, three brush trucks, one aerial tower, and several utility trucks worked to contain the wind-driven brush fire.

The fire occurred in a relatively remote area along the Northwest Branch/Anacostia River. It was contained  and extinguished, but roughly two acres were burned, according to Piringer. There were no injuries, but “possibly some squirrels, woodchucks, deer, raccoons, maybe a snake or two are displaced.”


Peri Peri Original has signed on to move into the space that was previously home to Pollo Mex at 13436 New Hampshire Ave in the Colesville Center. Pollo Mex closed last summer after 12 years in the location.

Peri Peri Original is an international chain that has over ten locations in Virginia and Maryland, as well as an additional location coming to Rockville (location not yet available). “Peri Peri chicken is marinated for 24hrs in our unique Portuguese Peri Peri sauce flamed grilled for serving from the spice selection of your choice.” The first United States location was opened in 2018 in Alexandria, Virginia.


Update: The road is no longer closed, but some lanes remain blocked. Delayed expected.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision on Cherry Hill Rd at FDA Blvd in Calverton around 6:30am on Thursday morning. According to Battalion Chief Steve Mann, the vehicle rolled over due to the collision, trapping two inside. The two patients, including one adult, were extricated and transported to the local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Some lanes on Cherry Hill Rd are now blocked between Powder Mill Rd & Gracefield Rd/Calverton Blvd


Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Wheaton Patrol Investigation Unit are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a 55-year-old man wanted for a number of crimes committed in Montgomery County. Jonah Ammiel Carter of Gaithersburg is alleged to have committed larceny and burglaries in Burtonsville, Silver Spring, and Kensington. Carter is reported to have stolen large quantities of items from a Giant Food in the 1200 block of East West Highway, on Monday, January 16 and a Giant Food in the 15000 block of Old Columbia Pike on Monday, February 6, 2023. He is also accused of stealing a large amount of items from a Safeway in the 10000 block of Connecticut Avenue in Kensington on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Jonah Ammiel Carter is asked to call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. Callers may remain anonymous.


After a little bit of a wait for eager diners, Naz’s Halal has let us know that the restaurant at 11209 New Hampshire Ave in White Oak, the former location of White Oak Dry Cleaners, will hold its Grand Opening on Saturday, March 11th. The restaurant will also be offering free food from 12pm-2pm on the same day (QR code for free food below). Naz’s Halal offers rice platters, sandwiches, gyros, wings, salads, and more.

The first location outside of New York was also in MoCo, at the Burtonsville Town Center, next to Tropical Smoothie Cafe. That location opened in August 2020 and has become a local favorite with late night hours. The restaurant has since opened locations in Rockville and Germantown with an additional MoCo location planned for Takoma Park (7653 New Hampshire Ave).
