According to Montgomery County Police, a 17-year-old Walter Johnson High School student has been arrested and charged as an adult for possession of a firearm. The student, who is a Bethesda resident, was arrested after a witness reported to school security that the student had a gun.  Montgomery County Public Schools security team members located the student, conducted a search and located a loaded 9 mm handgun.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., on Monday, October 23, 2023, Montgomery County Department of Police Community Engagement Officers were dispatched to the school, located in the 6400 block of Rock Spring Drive.  Based on the information provided and evidence of the gun, officers arrested the student.


Bomb threats were made against Blair High School (51 University Blvd E, Silver Spring) on October 13th and 16th that were both determined to be not credible.  We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) joined the nation in celebrating National Principals Month this October. This annual observance recognizes the vital role that principals play in creating a positive and nurturing learning environment for students.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will host a Girls’ Summit on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9am until 1pm at Clarksburg High School.” A CDC report released in February 2023 highlighted record high levels of sadness, suicide risk, and violence reported by teen girls. These concerning national trends are also seen in Montgomery County.” This event for students and their caregivers will offer education, resources and activities centered especially around young women’s health.

The Girls’ Summit will provide informative workshops geared towards middle and high school girls on a variety of current topics, a chance to network, participate in fun activities, learn valuable skills and enjoy a fashion show presented by White House Black Market celebrating diverse body types.

2. Applications for High School Regional/Countywide Special Programs: Grade 8 students can apply to Regional/Countywide Special Programs using the high school common application found in ParentVUE. Additionally, students in Grades 9-11 may apply for career readiness programs. Information sessions will be available for students and families, and all dates can be found on the special programs webpage.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) and Montgomery County Police responded to a collision involving a school bus and a pedestrian on Thursday, October 19 in Silver Spring.

According to police, “At approximately 3:54 p.m., MCP officers responded to the area of East West Hwy and Grubb Rd. for the report of a collision. The preliminary investigation has revealed that a school bus struck an adult male pedestrian who was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. A child inside the school bus sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.” We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.


The Outdoor Education Program celebrated its 60th anniversary on Oct. 14 at the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Education Center in Rockville. The event included comments from Joe Howard, the founder of Outdoor Ed and from former students who chose environmentally focused careers.

Attendees also planted trees, learned about Maryland agriculture, and explored a variety of exhibits and activities to learn more about the natural world and environmental stewardship. A video of the event can be seen below.
