Since its closing in 2013, the absence of Roy’s Place has left a hole in the hearts of many current and former MoCo residents. According to the now-defunct Roy’s Place website, the restaurant began serving their 200+ sandwiches in Rockville in 1955. After a couple moves within Rockville, they settled in at 2 E Diamond Ave in Olde Towne Gaithersburg in 1971.

“The Bender Schmender” (corned beef, turkey, roast pork, chicken liver pate & golden brisket with lettuce, tomato, golden sauce & a psychiatric appointment) and “The Raunchy Raymond” (ham, crab salad, Swiss cheese, bacon, tomato & golden sauce all broiled on choice of bread) are just two examples of the kind of sandwich you would find on the menu.

Signage is up for La Carreta Grocery at 18749 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg, in the location that was previously home to Active Physical Rehab and the Montgomery County Department Of Police 6th District station. The market will feature Latin American specialty products, as well as produce, dairy, and a meat department. La Carreta Grocery is currently scheduled  to open in October.

This past weekend, MegaMart opened its new location a few miles south at 33 Dalamar St. in Gaithersburg. The new grocery store is located at the former site of iconic MoCo restaurant, The Golden Bull, which closed in 2017. The existing MegaMart located across the street at 401 N Frederick Ave in the Hudson Trail Center will remain open for two more weeks. The Mega Bakery at 405 N Frederick Ave will also be closing and relocating to the new site.

Children’s clothing chain Carter’s is returning to its previous Gaithersburg Square location at 520 N. Frederick Ave. The store closed in July 2021 and was replaced by Charik African Fashion in March 2022. Charik was a family-owned African fashion store that sold shoes, clothing, and accessories and previously had a location inside of Lakeforest Mall. According to signage on the building, Carter’s is expected to open this fall.

Recently, Kogi Asian Grill and Boston Market have closed in Gaithersburg Square. Replacements for those locations have not yet been announced. In June,  Montgomery County run Oak, Barrel, and Vine opened at 512 N. Frederick Ave, next to Lil’ Cakes & Creamery and Five Below.

A viral video of a student attacking another student at Quince Orchard High School was all over social media earlier this week, sparking outrage amongst the community. The father of the student who was attacked in the video spoke out in an interview with FOX5’s Shomari Stone. The victim’s father told FOX 5 that he believes his son was targeted. He says his son is on the autism spectrum. “I’m obviously distraught, especially after seeing the video, or videos that have been, I guess leaked or put on social media. It hurts to see your child hit numerous times by a bully.” he said.

Gaithersburg mayor Jud Ashman was tagged in a post sharing the video and in turn tagged Quince Orchard High School Principal Beth Thomas for a response. Thomas replied, “We responded swiftly yesterday to this unacceptable behavior and incident. This is not tolerated and a violation of our Code of Conduct. It undermines our values and everything we are committed to creating at QO.  EVERY child deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and valued.”

The new MegaMart at 33 Dalamar St. in Gaithersburg is currently scheduled to open today (Saturday, September 9) at noon. The grocery store is located at the former site of iconic MoCo restaurant, The Golden Bull. The Golden Bull closed its doors on February 17th, 2017. In 2019, construction crews began the demolition of the building to make room for the new 26,600 SF Megamart.

The exiting MegaMart located across the street at 401 N Frederick Ave in the Hudson Trail Center will remain open for two more weeks. The Mega Bakery at 405 N Frederick Ave will also be closing and relocating to the new site.

Montgomery Village’s Fall Festival will take place this year on October 14 from 11am-2:30pm at North Creek Community Center (20125 Arrowhead Road). The event will feature food trucks, games, a petting zoo, and the annual Great Pumpkin Race. The Great Pumpkin Race is a “unique side-by-side, single-elimination race featuring handcrafted, decorated pumpkin race cars, in a madcap, dramatic explosion of creative ingenuity. The referee rules the race, building excitement as registered pumpkin race car owners compete for the Pumpkin Race Championship Trophy.”

“Add wheels to your custom-decorated pumpkin and face off against friends, neighbors or family in single elimination race heats. Pumpkin racers may collide, veer off course or have the perfect run—whoever crosses the finish line first moves on! The Pumpkin Races cap off the fall festival events, including live music, great food, and plenty of children’s activities during this family-centered day.”

In April we let you know that Copper Canyon Grill is requesting approval for a 1,012 square foot covered dining pier to be located on the RIO Lake. The restaurant submitted its final site plan back in July and the planning commission approved it unanimously at its meeting earlier this week. Renderings of what the pier will look like can be seen below.

Access to the outdoor dining area/pier will be via two gangways attached to the existing boardwalk. The new structure projects 10’-2” from the boardwalk and will be 12 feet tall from the finished floor. Gaithersburg Planning Staff supports the proposal for a dining pier in the Rio Washingtonian Lake, finding it in compliance with the approved sketch plan and Schematic Development Plan SDP- 9462-2023. “The dining pier will provide additional outdoor seating for Copper Canyon and will enhance the use of lake. There remains adequate parking for the proposed commercial addition and all applicable development standards have been met.”

After 9 years in the Travilah Square Shopping Center, Title Boxing has made the decision to move around the corner to the Traville Village shopping center. Title Boxing will be taking over the space that was home to Anytime Fitness (9725 Traville Gateway) until December 2022, next to the Traville Barber Shop.

The goal is to make it happen by the end of the year, but with only a few days of closure from the time the current location in Travilah Square closes to the time the upcoming location opens. Title Boxing owner John Sahakian tells us he is excited for the parking situation in the new space, as there will be ample parking for all guests. We’ll provide an update as things progress with the move.
