Summer Outdoor Concert Series Returns to Gaithersburg

Per the City of Gaithersburg: The City’s popular Summer Outdoor Concert Series returns to the Concert Pavilion. Free, family-friendly concerts take place in June, July, and August. Bring a blanket or low-back chair for lawn seating. Children’s Summer Concert Series: Parents & children alike will enjoy a variety of children’s performers on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

Evenings in Olde Towne: Wind down the workday with great music in a casual, outdoor setting on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. New this year, the City is partnering with Saints Row Brewing to include on-site beer sales & food trucks.

Own a Piece of Lakeforest Mall: Liquidation Auction Now Live

If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of Lakeforest Mall, now is your chance. Capital Auctions has just listed over 1000 items from inside of the mall, including fixtures from stores, decorative pieces, a Chevy Silverado and more. According to Capital Auctions, interested parties will be able to preview the items on Wednesday, July 5th 2023 10am-4:30pm with the auction closing on Thursday, July 6.

Lakeforest Mall closed permanently to the public on March 31st, after almost 45 years. The mall first opened on September 12, 1978. At that time, the mall’s anchor stores were JCPenney, Sears, Woodward & Lothrop, and Hecht’s. The mall was one of the first in the United States to feature an indoor ice skating rink on the lower level, in the “H section”, along with being the biggest indoor shopping mall in the county at the time of grand opening. The ice skating rink was replaced by a NTI Theaters movie theater in 1984, later renamed Cineplex Odeon Lakeforest 5, then by a food court, which now occupies the space. The mall was built on top of Lake Walker, a park on the property prior. The mall opened with approximately 30-50 stores, with some of the first stores being relocated from the then nearby indoor Village Mall (now an outdoor strip mall called Montgomery Village Center since 1991) and absorbed onto the property.

Pets Are Home is Now Open in Travilah Square

Pets Are Home second location, at 10038 Darnestown Rd in the Travilah Square Shopping Center, is now open. It has taken over the space previously occupied by Michael’s Noodles near Title Boxing Club. The first Pets Are Home Location was opened by a husband and wife team in Kensington (10414 Derrick Ave, Suite 300) in August 2021. Additional information on the story behind Pets Are Home, courtesy of its website:

“Nathan and his wife Ross moved to Kensington MD in 2019 where they now share a home with Cotton, their  French Mastiff.  As soon as they moved to Kensington, they quickly realized that buying food for Cotton involved either traversing through 40 minute traffic or buying online. Neither were desirable options for them, and they were not alone in this struggle. They discovered that other pet parents in their neighborhood also disliked driving through heavy traffic in North Rockville, competing for parking space in Downtown Bethesda, and buying online from big name retailers. It was immediately clear to Nathan and Ross that there was an unmet hunger for a pet supply store in Kensington.

Former Flower Child Location Available For Lease Again in Travilah Square

In December 2021, about a year and a half after Flower Child closed permanently, H&R Retail listed Holy Cross Health as the new occupant of the space at 10072 Darnestown Road in the Travilah Square Shopping Center. Flower Child initially closed when the pandemic shut down indoor dining back in March of 2020 and made the decision to close permanently a few months later. Holy Cross Health, an Urgent Care center operated by Holy Cross (a member of Trinity Health), signed on and even started construction in the space. The space has recently been listed as available to lease again by H&R Retail. Prior to Flower Child, the storefront was home to Sweet Frog.

Travilah Square has seen changes in recent years. One of the first moves made was to demolish the existing office building and Burger King and replace it with a new building containing a 12,500 square foot Trader Joe’s grocery store, along with a second, smaller retail space (upcoming tenant below). The late 1980’s look of the center was dated and Finmarc brought on MV+A  to revitalize the center and give it a new, clean, vibrant appearance. The new building blends with the shopping center utilizing the same patterned brick and steel trim to create a permanent, “timeless” appearance. A landscape plaza fronts the Trader Joe’s, and a curved brick and steel pergola shades this new outdoor amenity for the shopping center. More recent changes below:

Coming Soon Signage Up at Site of MoCo’s First Wawa

Coming soon signage for Wawa is up at 405 S Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg. The convenience store/gas station will be located at the site of the old Becraft Antiques on 355, across from Gaithersburg High School. We first let you know the news of Wawa’s Gaithersburg location in May of 2019.  Since then, the first MoCo Royal Farms was announced, constructed, and opened, and construction on MoCo’s first Sheetz is expected to be completed this summer. Construction on a second Sheetz in MoCo is expected to begin in 2024.  Photos of WaWa’s construction progress, or lack there of, can be seen below:

History: On December 1st, 2021, Wawa was granted approval for its final site plan of a new 5,060 square foot retail building and associated automobile filling station (gas station) by the City of Gaithersburg’s Planning Commission.This came after public opposition to the site led to the development being stalled after a group of 14 community members filed an administrative appeal in the Montgomery County Circuit Court. The opponents of the site had stated that the Wawa does not align with MoCo’s master plan and would generate traffic and noise annoyances for residents in the surrounding areas. In April of 2021, Judge Donald Beachley struck down the appeal, clearing the way for development to begin.

MCFRS Responds to Crash in Gaithersburg Sunday Morning

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a single-vehicle crash at approximately 10:30am on Sunday morning. The crash occurred on Duvall Ln, off of West Deer Park Rd, in Gaithersburg and involved a car crashing into a tree.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, one patient was evaluated with non-life-threatening injuries and was not transported to the hospital following the crash. Photos below, courtesy of Pete Piringer.

Contents of Gaithersburg Boston Market Up For Auction

The contents of the recently closed Boston Market at 494 N Frederick Ave Unit B in Gaithersburg Square are currently up for auction through Capital Online Auctions. Items include kitchen equipment, signage, furniture, fixtures, and POS computers. Capital Online will also be auctioning the contents of Lakeforest Mall later this month.

Last January we reported that Boston Market would be opening a new Rockville Pike location, according to signage that was put up at the old Katsu Go location in Towne Plaza (the shopping center that’s home to Navy Federal Credit Union and PM Pediatrics) at 12238 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852. In December, we spoke with a klnb representative who told us that Boston Market signed a lease, but had pulled out of the space. The restaurant previously had a location just a couple miles away– on Randolph Road in Loehmann’s Plaza. That location closed back in February of 2019 and has since been replaced by Toosso.

Gaithersburg Police is Searching for a Suspect Who Used Stolen Credit Cards at Local Grocery Store

Per Gaithersburg Police: “Do you recognize him? Video surveillance from a grocery store in Gaithersburg shows that on May 16, 2023 this unknown suspect used the victims credit cards to purchase over $500 in items.

The Gaithersburg Police is asking anyone with information about the identity of this suspect to contact the Gaithersburg Police at 301-258-6400 and ask for Officer Sample. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call the Gaithersburg Tip Line at 301-330-4471.”

State Trooper and MoCo Native Adopts 12-Year-Old Dog Who Was Abandoned by Original Owner

Lola has been living her best life with her new dad, Josh. Josh is a Maryland State Trooper who not only deserves a thank you for his occupation, but he deserves a HUGE thank you for the life he has given Lola. Lola goes on daily adventures. She just got back from a little vacation in Ocean City and absolutely loved the beach. She gets her exercise daily and is now getting around better than before despite her arthritis.

Lola is in the process of hopefully becoming an emotional support animal at the hospital for cancer patients. She has also helped young children who have been afraid dogs, to not be so afraid. She is truly one of a kind who just loves everyone she meets. Lola is exactly where she needs to be and is living her best life. We are incredibly thankful to Josh and his family for giving her the life she derserves.”
