MoCo Native Jordan Hawkins Hits Six Three Pointers As UCONN Beats Gonzaga to Advance to the Final Four

Yesterday we highlighted MoCo native Jordan Hawkins as UCONN prepared to play Gonzaga in an Elite Eight matchup. The young man led his team to a trouncing of Gonzaga, scoring 20 points and hitting six threes to take the #3 seed UCONN to the Final Four with an 82-54 win. Hawkins is a Montgomery County native who attended Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown and Gaithersburg High School for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to DeMatha. UCONN plays the winner of Miami/Texas on April 1st.

Hawkins was a top 50 recruit, who came to UConn following two years at powerhouse program DeMathaCatholic (Hyattsville, Md.) under Coach Mike Jones. He played AAU for Team Durant under Coach Angel Hernandez, and as a senior at DeMatha, averaged 19.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.9 blocks, while shooting .636 overall and .464 from three-point range to lead DeMatha to an 11-0 record and was named 2020-21 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year. Hawkins was a two-time Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention pick and averaged 20.2 points per game as a sophomore when he was at Gaithersburg High School (per UCONN).

Miriam is 3-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs approximately 115 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a white jacket and black/white tie dye pants. Miriam may be traveling to Tennessee with her 40-year-old grandmother, Carla Vanessa Martinez, in a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck bearing Tennessee license plates. Carla is 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. Family and police are concerned for her welfare. Notice of Street Construction In Gaithersburg Starting March 27 Through April (S. Summit Ave. & Hutton St.)

The Department of Public Works announced today that M.T. Laney, a Washington Gas contractor, will be preforming road repairs on South Summit Avenue & Hutton Street. The work is anticipated to begin on Monday, March 27, 2023, and will continue through April, weather permitting. The repairs will consist of asphalt milling, resurfacing & striping.

No road closures are planned, but drivers should expect minor delays at various times while work is in progress. On-street parking will be restricted at various times. “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of construction activity. These signs will be marked with the dates & times of the parking restrictions. A Washington Gas contractor will perform the work Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

MoCo’s Jordan Hawkins Leads UCONN Into Elite Eight Matchup Tonight

Jordan Hawkins, an All-Big East 6’5, 190 pound guard for the #4 seed UCONN Huskies, will lead his team against the #3 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs tonight at 8:49pm as the teams compete in an Elite Eight battle to get into the Final Four. Construction Continues at Upcoming Auntie Anne/Cinnabon Location in Rio

Back in November we let you know of the impending arrival of an Auntie Anne’s/Cinnabon combination restaurant at 220 Boardwalk Place in Rio, set to take over the location that was recently home to Lilly Magilly’s (the cupcakery is preparing for a move to a new, soon-to-be-announced location). Construction is ongoing (photo below) and though an opening date isn’t yet available, we’d expect a mid-2023 opening.

The two brands, popular for their presence in malls, are co-branding to open locations across the country. I’m recent years, Cinnabon left then returned to Montgomery Mall. There’s also an existing Cinnabon location in Wheaton Mall. Auntie Anne’s has locations at the outlets in Clarksburg, Ellsworth Place Mall, Montgomery Mall, and Wheaton Mall in MoCo.

Loaded and Cocked Handgun Found During Traffic Stop in Gaithersburg

Per Gaithersburg Police: On March 22, 2023 at 2:23 a.m., a Gaithersburg Police Department patrol officer observed a vehicle traveling on S. Frederick Avenue without the vehicle headlights on. A traffic stop was initiated and approached the vehicle, immediately smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The officer requested the driver’s drivers license and vehicle registration card, at which point the driver opened the glove box and inadvertently revealed a handgun.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the handgun was loaded with one round in the chamber and the external hammer cocked. Additionally, there were large amounts of fresh marijuana loose throughout the vehicle. Based on the numerous violations, the driver, 22-years-old, male from Gaithersburg, MD was arrested and issued traffic citations and charged with firearms violations.

Flagship Carwash Temporarily Closes Gaithersburg and Rockville Locations for Renovations

The Flagship Carwash locations at 87 Bureau Dr in Gaithersburg and 785 Hungerford Dr in Rockville are temporarily closed for renovations. A representative from the company tells us they expect to reopen both locations in about 60 days. The Germantown location at 11620 Middlebrook Road remains open. Flagship has over 20 locations across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Quince Orchard High School To Begin Enforcing New Lunch Policy For Students on Friday, March 24

Quince Orchard High School principal Beth Thomas tweeted the following regarding the lunch policy at the school,“In light of the continued safety concerns & disruptive behaviors that have taken place off school property, QOHS will actively enforce our lunch policy beginning tmrw Fri 3/24 for the remainder of the year. We will not waver from implementation of this policy.” The full policy can be seen below:

“Quince Orchard High School has a Closed Lunch Policy for all students in Grades 9 and 10. Students in Grades 11 and 12 may leave QO property for lunch. They must have a student ID card that reflects their lIth and 12′ grade status. If an Ilth or 12th grader wants to leave campus during lunch, they MUST show their current year school ID card to school statt. No exceptions.

Watkins Mill High School Placed on Brief Shelter in Place Thursday

Watkins Mill High School at 10301 Apple Ridge Rd in Montgomery Village was placed on a brief shelter in place on Thursday afternoon after an incident involving a juvenile driver near the school. According to MCPD, “At approximately 12:06 p.m., an off-duty federal officer was picking up his child at a bus stop near Watkins Mill HS when he observed a car driving erratically and at a high rate of speed. The off-duty officer stopped the driver, a juvenile male.

Following the stop, several students in the area converged on the officer. He called for assistance and MCPD officers responded. The car was towed. Watkins Mill HS was placed on a brief shelter in place. The driver was cited for driving without a license.”

New Patio is Ready at Silver Diner Rio

Last November we reported on the deconstruction of Silver Diner’s outdoor patio in Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront. At that time we were told the diner was planning on constructing a new outdoor patio that can remain open in any weather. You may have recently noticed that the outdoor patio is back with a nearly identical look to last year’s version. An employee told us that due to the patio being situated above water and the supports having to go beneath the water, the project proved to be too much so the original patio was brought back in time for diners to enjoy Spring and Summer dining outdoors.

Rockville-based Silver Diner, which opened its first restaurant in Montgomery County back in 1989, recently opened its first DC location at 1250 Half Street, SE (Ball Park/Navy Yard) on October 5th. Silver Diner co-founder/CEO Robert Giaimo and partner/executive chef Ype Von Hengst opened the first Silver Diner in Rockville in 1989. The duo visited over 500 diners across the country to prepare for the opening of Silver Diner, which was located in Mid-Pike Plaza, where Pike & Rose stands today. The Rockville location later moved to Federal Plaza, in the location that was previously home to Bennigan’s, where it remains today. The Rio location opened in August of 2019, taking over the space that was previously home to Cafe Deluxe and Hamburger Hamlet.
