Lawsuit Against Montgomery County Police for the Shooting of Ryan LeRoux at a Gaithersburg McDonald’s in 2021 Draws Support From Department of Justice

The parents of Ryan LeRoux, who was shot and killed by police officers in July 2021, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Montgomery County Police. The attorneys for the family released a statement (available below) on Friday announcing support from The Disability Rights Section of the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

The lawsuit claims that LeRoux’s rights were violated under the Americans with Disabilities Act because he was suffering from a mental health crisis when he was shot, according to a Fox 5 report. The lawsuit also claims that MCPD has a history of using deadly force in cases that involve a mental health crisis and that the officers were poorly trained in handling these types of situations.

Collision In Gaithersburg Involving Vehicle and Scooter

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a collision between a vehicle and a scooter on Muddy Branch Rd & W Deer Rd in Gaithersburg at approximately 8am Saturday morning.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) PIO Pete Piringer, one adult is being evaluated with priority 2 trauma injuries that are non-life-threatening.

10/14/22 Update Per Park Police: “The subject was identified as Jonathan Boka, 26, of Gaithersburg. He was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, crime motivated by race or religion, use of a firearm in a crime of violence, and 1st degree assault. We thank the community for tips that led to his arrest.”

Original Report: On Tuesday, Maryland Park Police sent out a tweet asking for help to identify a subject wanted in a crime at Hunters Woods Local Park in Gaithersburg on October 8 at 12:15 pm. Locally Crafted to Reopen Saturday, October 15 in a New Location at Rio

Locally Crafted in Gaithersburg’s Rio will be reopening on Saturday, October 15, in a new location. The store is relocating from 125 Boardwalk Pl. one block down to 201 Boardwalk Pl, the former site of Jos. A. Bank and Stay Social.

Detectives Investigate Armed Bank Robberies in Gaithersburg

On Thursday, September 8, 2022, at approximately 5:04 p.m., 6th District Officers responded to the TD Bank in the 800 block of West Diamond Ave. for the report of an armed bank robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives revealed that the suspect entered the bank and approached an employee. The suspect passed the employee a note demanding money and stating that he had a gun and a pipe bomb. The employee handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect who then left the bank.

Nori Japan to Leave Lakeforest Mall

The owners of Nori Japan, one of the last remaining restaurants at Lakeforest Mall, have announced that they are currently looking for a new location. A sign at the restaurant asks customers to follow the owner on Facebook and that they will “notify every customer when we find a new store”. The restaurant is still currently open.

Former QO And Penn State Football Star, Bani Gbadyu, is Battling Advanced Pancreatic Cancer

Bani Gbadyu made a name for himself battling on the football field. Now, the former Quince Orchard and Penn State student/athlete has a different battle. “I never thought I would hear the words Advanced Pancreatic Cancer in my life, much less at such a young age. Hearing and learning that I have cancer and being in the hospital for over 2 weeks has been the absolute hardest experience of my life.” Gbadyu wrote in a social media post yesterday.

According to the Penn State athletics website, the 2006 Quince Orchard graduate escaped the revolution and poverty in Liberia by taking a boat with his father and brother across the Atlantic to the United States when he was 10. He later attended Gaithersburg Middle School before going to high school at Quince Orchard, where he earned multiple football awards and a scholarship to Penn State. Following his time at Penn State, he had a stint with the Oakland Raiders during preseason.

Free Electric Scooter Clinics for Those 18-and-Older Will Be Available in October and November

The clinics generally will last about two-to-four hours and e-scooters will be available at each site. Those interested in e-scooters can stop in at any time during the clinic.

Pines of Rome Looking to Open Second Location

Pines of Rome has been a Bethesda staple for over 50 years, serving its extremely popular white pizza, spaghetti & meatballs, and other traditional Italian dishes. The throwback Italian restaurant that still uses the classic red-checkered tablecloths has tabbed WashUrban to spearhead their first ever search for a second location, Danny Rubin (Co-founder, WashUrban) tells us. The restaurant is located at 4918 Cordell Ave. in Bethesda, where it moved in 2017. Pines of Rome was previously located at 4709 Hampden Lane, opening in 1972. They are currently targeting Potomac, Rockville, and Gaithersburg as possible location for the second restaurant.

Muddy Branch Square Giant Temporarily Evacuated for Investigation of Fuel Odor

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services are on the scene at Giant in Muddy Branch Square (Gaithersburg) investigating a fuel odor in the store., according to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer. The store, located at 842 Muddy Branch Rd., has been temporarily evacuated during the investigation.
