Lapu Lapu at 216 Market St W. in Gaithersburg opened on Sunday, June 5, and is continuing its soft opening with a schedule of Wednesday-Sunday from 7am-3pm.  The new restaurant has taken over the 325 square foot storefront that was formerly home to Tex-Mex restaurant Peppers, located next to Vasili’s in the Kentlands. It will specialize in breakfast sandwiches and will have a few tables available for outdoor seating.

Lapu Lapu is the sister restaurant of popular Rockville restaurant Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly. Our very own Mr. MoCo picked up breakfast over the weekend and shared his experience, available below:

JK Beer and Wine is moving from its current location at 800 Rockville Pike to 331 Kentlands Blvd, the former location of Liberty Income Tax, in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood in the space located on the other side of Giuseppi’s.

JK Beer and Wine opened at its current Rockville Pike location in the Golden Arcade shopping center, next to Yuan Fu Vegetarian, in the fall of 2021. It took over the space that was previously home to Enterprise. There will be a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcoholic Beverage Services (ABS) at 11:30am on Thursday, June 16th for a “transfer of location of a Class A, Beer and Wine License, Off Sale Only with delivery, for the premises known as JK Beer & Wine.”

The City commemorates Juneteenth/Freedom Day with programs, a tribute at the Jubilation Day Gospel Concert, and an official proclamation. June 19, 2022, best known as Juneteenth/Freedom Day, marks the 157th anniversary of the arrival of Union soldiers and General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the Union soldiers enforced the President’s order ending enslavement.

China King at 8035 Snouffer School Rd in Gaithersburg has closed. The restaurant opened in 2001 and closed its doors this past April. The owners tell us that difficulty staffing and pandemic woes helped them to decide it was time to retire.

China King was known for its modern interpretation of classic dishes and for using high quality fresh ingredients. The restaurant was located between 7-Eleven and El Salvadoran restaurant El Encanto.

Work has begun on the interior of Charley Prime, the new restaurant from Jackie Greenbaum & Gordon Banks (Little Coco’s, El Chucho, Bar Charley, Quarry House Tavern) that will be replacing Tara Thai on the Rio boardwalk at 9811 Washington Blvd in Gaithersburg. The restaurant is expected to open this fall.

According to a press release, the team envisions the restaurant as a mature version of their popular DC restaurant Bar Charley, with an expanded menu, but keeping its lively cocktail forward energy. The broader menu will remain steak focused, but will also feature house made pastas (a la Little Coco’s) as well as other items unique to just this location. The group has tapped Editlab@Streetsense to design the space.

Updated July 4th with additional information. Just a couple days after we showed you some of the progress of the interior at the upcoming Amazon Fresh location on Shady Grove Rd in Gaithersburg, signage has been put up on the front side of the building. It has been nearly two years since we first reported that Office Depot would be closing and that an Amazon grocery store would be taking its place back in September 2020.

Amazon Fresh, located at 15790 Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg, looks like it will open this summer based on what we were able to see earlier this week. Fixtures and signage is up inside the store and the freezers have already been installed and are up and running. Charging stations for electric vehicles have been installed in the parking lot, located where only Amazon Fresh customers are likely to park in front of the store.

It has been approximately three years since we reported that CVS would be taking over the old Tommy Joe’s/Boulevard Tavern/Brasserie Beck/O’Donnell’s location in the Kentlands. Construction continues to progress, as the frame of the building is now nearly complete except for the roof. There’s no timetable for when CVS will be ready to open, but it wouldn’t surprise us if it opened by this end of this fall.

Gaithersburg Councilmember Neil Harris told us that CVS would be moving forward with the plan back in 2019. Demolition of the old building occurred in November with construction starting soon after.

The OTC Bar & Grille in Olde Towne Gaithersburg has announced it is now hiring and will be opening this summer. OTC Bar & Grille is being opened by the owners of the Olde Towne Cafe at 226 E Diamond Ave, who have owned the business since 2000. It is located in the former Olde Towne Cafe restaurant space, as well as the adjacent space that was previously home to Diamond Drugs. Last year the owners knocked down the wall that separates the two locations to create the new restaurant/bar space.

BGR, which stands for “Burgers Grilled Right,” will close its Rio location permanently on Saturday, June 11th, according to a representative from the restaurant. BGR opened in Rio approximately 10 years ago at 229 Boardwalk Place, next to Muse Paint Bar, just outside of the building that contains the movie theater.

We were informed of the news by Montgomery County restaurateur, Wesley Yao, who was told of the upcoming closure when employees of the BGR location reached out seeking employment and informed him that they were notified Saturday will be the last day of operations for Rio’s BGR. The news was confirmed via phone call today.
