Gaithersburg-based residential mortgage lender, Homespire Mortgage, announced last week its support of $20,000 for World Central Kitchen (WCK), a not-for-profit organization founded by renowned Chef José Andrés. WCK provides meals for people impacted by natural disasters and other crises around the world. The $20,000 donation was made possible through the success of Homespire MOVE, a new company health and wellness campaign that encourages employees to record their physical exercise, like hiking, biking, swimming and walking. Reaching a combined goal of 100,000 minutes of physical exercise meant the company would contribute financial aid to WCK.

Per the press release: Employees tracked and recorded their total minutes of activity from April 8-29, with the company donating $0.10 for every minute tallied. Homespire’s donation supports WCK’s #ChefsForUkraine response to distribute much needed meals to refugees throughout the nation’s war-torn communities as the organization continues to provide 250,000 daily meals and food kits through its 2,000+ distribution sites in Ukraine.

A previous version of this article stated that OmniFun was closed. The business remains open until May 23rd

After three years in business, OmniFun Indoor Play Center at 831 Russell Ave Gaithersburg, which boasted having “one of the largest ball pits in Montgomery County,” is closing.  The location’s assets, including a three-level indoor jungle gym, arcade machines, toys and general household items, are up for auction through Capital Online Auctions. Owner Mike Tian says the business could not recover after the coronavirus pandemic brought his business to a standstill. “The business was a success on the first day we were open,” he told Capital Online. “It served as a sweet spot for kids to socialize with others and for parents to relax and have a chat. We were very well received and recognized by the community. We had parents traveling hours to OmniFun every weekend. Our birthday parties were fully booked every weekend.”

The loyal player was stunned when he saw the matches that suggested his $30 scratch-off was one of the game’s top-prize winners. “I examined the ticket six or seven times to be sure.” Still not satisfied, he scanned it another six or seven times using the Lottery app on his phone. “I kept coming up with a $100,000 win every time and every way I checked. It was so exciting, and such a relief.”

Corner Pizza & Subs at 18503 N Frederick Ave. plan to open by the end of this month. The restaurant has a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for May 26 but is hoping to have its doors open before then.  The restaurant is located in the former Jasmine Bakery Café location (that was previously home to Classic Bakery) in the Gaithersburg shopping center that is also home to Brewster’s Ice Cream.  We spoke with owners Nishade and Prabath who told us that the restaurant will specialize in what’s sometimes referred to as “Maryland Style Pizza“, the rectangular pizza you find at local restaurants like Stained Glass Pub, Continental, Gentleman Jim’s,  and 4 Corners Pub.  Nishade has worked in pizza restaurants since he came to America from Sri Lanka over twenty years ago.

The restaurant will make its dough fresh daily and menu items in addition to pizza will include subs, meatballs, and wings, as well as a breakfast menu.  The restaurant will be open from 6am-11pm daily and has an indoor dining room as well as a room that can be reserved for hosting parties/events. We will post an opening date once it is announced.

The upcoming 9.54-acre park is located at the former Consumer Product Safety Commission site on Rt. 28. (10901 Darnestown Road). A 16-month construction period is anticipated, with completion in February 2023.

Per the City of Gaithersburg: Because of a supply chain issue, there was a delay in receiving the stormwater piping necessary for the project.  This has resulted in some delays in the progress on site.  All of the stormwater piping arrived by the start of April and significant progress in installing stormwater piping and inlets has been made along the entrance drive.
