Construction at Pleasant View Park at Former CPSC Site in Gaithersburg

The upcoming 9.54-acre park is located at the former Consumer Product Safety Commission site on Rt. 28. (10901 Darnestown Road). A 16-month construction period is anticipated, with completion in February 2023.

Per the City of Gaithersburg: Because of a supply chain issue, there was a delay in receiving the stormwater piping necessary for the project. This has resulted in some delays in the progress on site. All of the stormwater piping arrived by the start of April and significant progress in installing stormwater piping and inlets has been made along the entrance drive.

Gaithersburg to Recognize Fallen Soldiers on Memorial Day

Loyalty & patriotism will be on full display as the City joins the nation in honoring all who have given their lives in military service at its Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 30, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Christman Park. The public is invited to join the Mayor & City Council, Junior Mayor, City staff & honored guests in a tribute to those of all generations who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Joining the May 30 observance will be guest speaker Dr. Richard W. Thomas, MD, DDS, FACS (Major General – Retired). Dr. Thomas retired as a Major General from the United States Army with more than 26 years of service. During his career he commanded at multiple levels within the Army, including serving as the Director of Healthcare Operations & the Chief Medical Officer for the Defense Health Agency; Commanding General of the Western Regional Medical Command; Surgeon General, USFORCES-Afghanistan; Chief, U.S. Army Medical Corps; and numerous other staff & leadership positions. Dr. Thomas has also served multiple combat tours supporting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan & Panama.

DC Restaurateurs Jackie Greenbaum & Gordon Banks to open Rio Lakefront Restaurant, Replacing Tara Thai

A new, modern American restaurant from Jackie Greenbaum & Gordon Banks (Little Coco’s, El Chucho, Bar Charley, Quarry House Tavern) will be coming to 9811 Washington Blvd in Gaithersburg, the former location of Tara Thai. Chef/Partner Adam Harvey, long time Executive Chef with Greenbaum & Banks, will helm the kitchen, along with Russell Pike, currently the Chef de Cuisine at Little Coco’s.

According to a press release, the team envisions the restaurant as a mature version of their popular DC restaurant Bar Charley, with an expanded menu, but keeping its lively cocktail forward energy. The broader menu will remain steak focused, but will also feature house made pastas (a la Little Coco’s) as well as other items unique to just this location. The group has tapped Editlab@Streetsense to design the space.

Ela Mesa Taste of Greece Now Open in Gaithersburg

Ela Mesa Taste of Greece held their grand opening this past Monday, May 2nd. The new Greek restaurant is located at 109 Paramount Park Drive in the Spectrum Town Center in Gaithersburg, which is currently home to restaurants like Barking Made Cafe, California Tortilla, Hot Pot Hero, and Firebirds. The restaurant offers traditional Greek fare and also has a full bar that seats 10 people. Menu items include Pastitsio, Thalassina (seafood pasta), Kanelonia (veggie cannelloni), Kebabs, Lamb Chops, and Seafood Risotto.

Kisco Senior Living, which is currently being constructed next to Life Time in Gaithersburg, and joint venture partners Welltower® (NYSE: WELL) & SHA Capital Partners have announced a donation of $50,000 to the City of Gaithersburg’s Benjamin Gaither Center. The Center will serve residents of Gaithersburg & the surrounding community who are 55 years of age & older, will utilize the donation for facility improvements & an expansion of culturally enriching programs.

Founder and Former CEO of Gaithersburg’s Emergent BioSolutions, Fuad El-Hibri, Has Passed Away at 64

Emergent BioSutions released a statement last week mourning the loss of founder and former CEO and executive chairman, Fuad El-Hibri, who died peacefully at home early Saturday surrounded by family and loved ones. Per the statement:

Fuad founded Emergent (then BioPort) in 1998 with a single product, BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed), and took the company public in 2006. Having served as CEO for almost 14 years until March 2012, and executive chairman for 10 years until his retirement in March 2022, Fuad was instrumental in growing the company’s portfolio to its current suite of marketed and procured products for a variety of public health threats, including medical countermeasures for anthrax, smallpox, botulism, and chemical warfare agents, as well as overseeing the company’s role in fighting the opioid crisis.

Construction Update on 200,000 SF Building Being Constructed On Darnestown Road

A nearly 200,000-square foot building with a five-level parking garage containing up to 562 spaces is currently being constructed for Research and Development use off at 9810 Darnestown Rd next to the Travilah Square shopping center. The first tenant has been announced and update photos and a rendering of the completed building can be seen below.

Building A will be the first of three buildings planned for Parcel N (shown in the images below). Together, these buildings will form a research and development campus that coordinates effectively with the current life sciences campus.

Gaithersburg City Park Photo Contest

The Alliance for Parks of the Gaithersburg Parks, Arts and Recreation Corporation (G-PARC), along with the Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture, are pleased to announce the First Annual Photo Contest, designed to showcase the best of Gaithersburg’s Parks, Arts & Recreation. Photos should illustrate the connection between parks, arts & culture, and recreation in the City, and MUST be taken in a City Park. Photos should fall under one of the following themes.

The top 12 photos will be announced at the end of May. Winners will be selected by a panel of jurors comprised of local artists, members of G-PARC, & members of the City’s Public Information Office. In addition, a random winner will be chosen weekly during the month of May. All winners will be announced on Instagram & Facebook, and notified via social media channels. The objective of this contest is to expand G-PARC’s social media presence through photo documentation of our parks & what happens in them.

Small Plane Bound for Gaithersburg Lands in New Jersey After Smoke Reported in Cockpit

A small single-engine Piper PA-32 plane that was headed to the Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg was forced to make an emergency landing in New Jersey on Sunday morning after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit, according to a report by FOX 5. The plane, which had initially departed from Norwood Regional Airport in Norwood, MA landed safely at Teterboro Airport in Bergen County, NJ around 11am. It is not know how many people were aboard the plane at the time of the incident. Per Wikipedia, the Piper PA-32 is a single-engine, light aircraft manufactured in the United States by Piper Aircraft and is used around the world for private transportation, air taxi services, bush support, and medevac flights.

According to US News & World Report, the FAA is investigating the incident and that “The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns and manages the airport, did not immediately respond to questions about the incident, and local police also did not respond.”

City of Gaithersburg Hosts ‘Train Day’ Event on Saturday, May 7

The City of Gaithersburg is hosting “Train Day” as the Community Museum celebrates the City’s long & storied history with the railroad that allows visitors to immerse themselves in everything trains. View large-scale steam locomotive model train displays exhibited by Local Locos Live Steamers, learn about the MARC & Brunswick line with the Maryland Transit Authority, and make a train craft. Explore a caboose, the RDC rail car, and the 1918 steam locomotive in the adjacent History Park. Discover hands-on learning centers& shop for train-related items in the Museum. With any luck visitors can also enjoy the sights & sounds of the actual CSX & Amtrak trains that frequently rumble by.

This event will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2022 from 11am until 3:30pm. This is a drop-in program for audiences of all ages. Admission is free, but a donation to help cover the cost of materials is appreciated. Please note children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Uptons, a discount department store that started in Georgia in 1985 and grew to 75 stores across the east coast by the mid 90s, opened a Montgomery County location in the Kentlands where The Colonnade development currently stands.
