The local artisanal ice cream scoop shop is going to be located in the space next to Starbucks on Boardwalk Place as a summer pop-up (updated on 6/8 to reflect the pop-up status of the store).

For those unfamiliar with Moorenko’s, they earned The MoCoShow’s #1 ice cream spot in MoCo award when we released our list back in 2017.

Last night we had Gaithersburg City Councilmember Neil Harris on episode 47 of The MoCoShow and we discussed Royal Farms coming to an agreement to open their first MoCo location in Gaithersburg. Podcast available below (Royal Farms news discusses at approximately 33:20).

Neil told us that when the developer bought the property across from Gaithersburg High School where the Wawa is going, they initially considered 7-Eleven. The Gaithersburg City Council asked if it was possible to bring something new to the area “like a Wawa or Royal Farms.”

Initially founded as a hotdog cart in 1990, The Halal Guys made the switch to chicken, gyro meat, and pita two years later. The first brick and mortar restaurant opened in New York in 2015 and the company hasn’t looked back since, opening over 70 brick and mortar locations.

Halal Guys will be located at 522 N Frederick Ave, next to T-Mobile.

We spoke with representatives from Wawa today who let us know they plan on opening their first Montgomery County location in Gaithersburg.

Wawa will be taking over the old Becraft Antiques location on 355 across from Gaithersburg High School (405 S Frederick Ave).

Stop by between 10am-2pm for local produce, beer, spirits, CBD, baked goods, beauty supplies and a lot more, including live music by Park Valley Band starting at 11:30am.

In other news, it was announced last night that Dogfish Head will be merging with Boston Beer Company (the maker of Sam Adams) in a deal worth around $300 million.

They’ll be taking over part of the location that used to be home to Last Mango, Zodiac Grill, Tony and James, 44 Sports Bar and Grill, and most recently Largent’s Restaurant and Bar location (654 Center Point Way).

Bonchon has over 300 locations worldwide, almost 100 in the United States, and two other MoCo locations (Germantown and Rockville).

According to a notice on the door of the old location, 328 Main Street, a permit was issued to Yaho Sushi in January of 2019.

We don’t have any information on when the restaurant may be ready to go, but our best guess would be after the summer assuming changes will be made to the existing layout (though that may not be necessary due to the similar nature of the restaurants).

Husband and wife team, Florian and Shannon Radke, opened their first bakery in Berkeley, California in 2010. Four years later, the couple appeared on Shark Tank, where they initially accepted a $200,000 investment for 20% of their company (the deal later fell through due to differences in how investor Robert Herjavec and the Radke’s saw the company moving forward).

We’re told the bakery will be located at 230 Crown Park Ave., the former home of Yogiberry, next to Chopt. After a few delays, they expect to open late summer 2019
