Governor Hogan Announces New Information Technology Workforce Development Program

The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) will partner with Catalyte, Inc. and Digital Network Group, LLC to provide a fully developed and subsidized operational training and apprenticeship program. This program will offer individuals who do not possess an IT background and qualifications a pathway to break into the IT industry and helps individuals develop long-term career opportunities while providing economic benefits to Maryland communities.

“Through this innovative program, we are creating new economic and life-changing career opportunities for more Marylanders, in one of the most important sectors” said Governor Hogan. “As the United States continues to confront a historic and unprecedented labor shortage, we are advancing a bold workforce development agenda for Maryland.”

“Today, we are also again calling on Democratic leaders in Maryland to take action to address rising gas prices. We are once again calling on the Comptroller to use the same authority he has in the past in order to minimize the impact of the gas tax increase scheduled for July 1. We are again calling on the presiding officers of the General Assembly to convene a special session for the express and sole purpose of passing emergency legislation to suspend the gas tax. I am prepared to swiftly sign a gas tax suspension into law.

“There is no reason why we cannot come together and get this done before the July 4th holiday to provide much-needed relief for the crushing costs burdening families and businesses.”

“Maryland has more horses per square mile than any other state in America and a thriving horse industry that is vital to our state’s economy,” said Governor Hogan. “We have a long tradition of French horses, owners, trainers, and jockeys competing in Maryland, and we look forward to expanding this valuable partnership.”

The agreement was signed during the Prix de Diane Race in Chantilly, France—a Group 1 flat horse race that is open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. Maryland is a leader in the horse industry, annually hosting both the Preakness Stakes—the second jewel of the Triple Crown—and the Maryland 5 Star, which is one of only two 5 Star events in the United States, and only the seventh in the world. The horse industry adds more than $1.3 billion and more than 21,000 jobs to the state’s economy.

All Marylanders Six Months and Older Now Eligible for COVID-19 Vaccine

COVID-19 vaccines are now available for Marylanders six months and older, according to the Maryland Department of Health. Visit https://montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/vaccine/ for information on vaccine clinics in Montgomery County.

“We welcome having COVID-19 vaccines to help protect our youngest Marylanders against severe illness, hospitalization, or even death from this virus and strongly encourage parents to vaccinate their children,” said MDH Secretary Dennis R. Schrader. “We have been preparing to receive these COVID-19 vaccines and, utilizing our vast network of pediatricians, family practitioners, federally qualified health centers, pharmacies, and local health departments, will begin distributing them equitably across the state right away.”

Maryland is 2022’s 8th Worst State for Summer Road Trips, According to Study

With nearly 80% of U.S. adults saying they will take some sort of road trip this summer, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Best & Worst States for Summer Road Trips. Their road trip report found that Maryland ranks 43^rd nationally for summer driving, which puts our state at the 8th worst, and you can read more about why below.

Per the article, “Deciding to take a trip is the easy part, though. Picking a destination and affording everything you want to pack into your itinerary is harder. Gas prices might be one thing to worry about, for example. They’ve been growing this year, with the national average at over $4 per gallon now. On top of that, you’ll need to consider accommodations, activities and dining. All of these certainly contribute to the more than $751 billion we spend on leisure travel each year.”

Maryland Beer, Wine, & Spirits Festival Returns to Montgomery County Saturday, July 9

Grow & Fortify’s Maryland Beer, Wine, & Spirits Festival returns to the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 9. Attendees may browse artisans, dine with food trucks and sample an excellent selection of Maryland craft beer, wine, spirits, cider and mead. This event is a consumer experience presenting the three pillars of the state’s craft alcohol industry in one venue.

“We’re fortunate to work closely with Maryland’s craft alcohol producers,” said Abby Casarella, the director of events at Grow & Fortify. “Our organization can present the industry and these delicious products in a way that uniquely focuses on the producer.”

Maryland Is 2022’s ‘6th Most Patriotic State in America’, According to Study

With the Fourth of July approaching, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Most Patriotic States in America. Maryland ranked 6th on the list, with our neighbor Virginia coming in 3rd behind Montana (2nd) and Alaska (1st). According to the report, “Americans may feel their patriotism dampened this year in the face of startling statistics such as the fact that there was a 44% increase in hate crimes in major cities last year, as well as a similarly high jump in the homicide rate. Many people may find it hard to celebrate a country in which racist incidents and frequent violence persist. However, an expression of love for fellow citizens is patriotic in itself.”

To determine where Americans have the most red, white and blue pride, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 13 key indicators of patriotism. The data set ranges from the state’s military enlistees and veterans to the share of adults who voted in the 2020 presidential election to AmeriCorps volunteers per capita. “Maryland is open for business, and our economic recovery continues to be one of the very best in America,” said Governor Hogan. “This mission will be focused on expanding partnerships with key allies, promoting some of Maryland’s key industries, and fostering new opportunities to continue creating jobs and strengthening our economy.”

This is the governor’s first mission of this kind since September 2019, when he led a joint infrastructure and economic development mission to Australia during his time as chairman of the National Governors Association.
