Maryland is having a successful recovery from new unemployment claims, with last week’s claims lower than in the same week in 2019, according to WalletHub’s updated rankings for the States Whose Unemployment Claims Are Recovering the Quickest.

The U.S., in general,  is making significant progress in the fight against COVID-19 with the distribution of the vaccine and boosters, and this has been reflected in the job market, despite new unemployment claims increasing slightly week-over-week on February 28.


Governor Larry Hogan today issued the following statement after the Board of Revenue Estimates reported an increase in the state’s record budget surplus:

“Today’s incredible revenue estimates increase our already record surplus and reinforce the fact that Maryland continues to have one of the strongest recoveries in America.


ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced that the State of Maryland’s COVID-19 hospitalizations have dropped below 300, as the state is again reporting the country’s lowest case rate.

Hospitalizations: 296, ICU: 60. Since the Omicron peak of 3,452, Maryland’s COVID-19 hospitalizations have now declined by 91.4%, and are at their lowest level since Aug. 1, 2021.


McCormick & Company, makers of Old Bay, have teamed up with McClintock Distilling in Frederick, MD to create an Old Bay flavored vodka.  According to Old Bay, the vodka is six times distilled for maximum purity and smoothness and perfectly highlights the quintessential flavor of the iconic Old Bay spice blend.

The 35% ABV vodka is scheduled to hit shelves in the middle of this month and is expected to retail for $19.99.

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced that a record number of Marylanders enrolled for health coverage for 2022 in the annual open enrollment that just ended through Maryland Health Connection. The 182,861 enrollments marked a new record for the state-based health insurance marketplace, a 10% increase over the 2021 open enrollment total of 166,038.


Per the State of Maryland:

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced that the State of Maryland’s COVID-19 positivity rate has dropped below 2%, and hospitalizations are now just one-tenth of what they were at the Omicron peak.


Over the weekend,  Larry Hogan directed Maryland’s Secretary of State to terminate Maryland’s sister state relationship with the Leningrad Region of Russia, which was established in 1993.

The governor has also directed state agencies to review any and all contracts, procurements, and holdings that may have ties to Russian entities, according to Hogan’s Government website. 


Personal finance website, WalletHub, has released a study to determine the “Best and Worst States for Women” in 2022.

In order to determine how women are faring and where they can find the best opportunities relative to where they live, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 25 key indicators of living standards for women. The data set ranges from median earnings for female workers to women’s preventive health care to the female homicide rate.


The Maryland House of Delegates passed a bill today that would allow voters to decide whether or not to legalize cannabis in Maryland.  House Bill 1 states that, “on or after July 1, 2023, an individual in the State who is at least 21 years old may use and possess cannabis.”

If the bill passes through the Maryland State Senate, voters will see the question on the ballot this November.
