Shortly before 5PM Sunday evening, Montgomery County Career and Volunteer Firefighters, along with firefighters from the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) Fire Department, responded to an apartment fire at 104 Duvall Lane in Gaithersburg.
Firefighters arrived and found multiple apartments on fire and quickly initiated fire attack and searches for any trapped occupants. Career and Rockville Volunteer Firefighters assigned to Rockville’s Rescue Squad 703 located a woman trapped in an adjacent apartment. They quickly and safely extricated her with the assistance of a Tower Ladder truck from Fire Station 708 (Russell Avenue). She was not hurt.
No injuries were reported, however several dozen people were displaced. The American Red Cross of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region responded to assist the displaced occupants.
The fire is believed to have been electrical in nature, and is believed to have originated in the void space between the second floor ceiling and the floor of the third floor apartments.
As of late Sunday evening, damage was estimated to be around $1.75 Million, according to Montgomery County Fire/Rescue Chief Spokesman Pete Piringer.

Roof Work Sparks Tar Fire Above Montgomery Village Townhomes
Around 1PM Saturday Afternoon, Montgomery County Firefighters along with firefighters from the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) Fire Department responded to the 19,000 block of Capehart Drive in Montgomery Village for a reported townhouse fire.
Firefighters arrived to find residents advising everyone was safely outside, but there was a working fire on the roof of their row of townhomes.
Firefighters used extension ladders and ladder trucks to access the roof and found a small fire, which MCFRS Spokesman Pete Piringer tweeted had been sparked by hot tar from roof work.
Battalion Fire Chief Steve Mann, who was on scene, reported that all firefighters were clearing the scene as of 1:40PM after extinguishing what he described as a small fire on the roof. No injuries were reported.
Construction has recently begun at the former Montgomery Village Golf Course. Monument Realty is in charge of building the planned community that will be known as Bloom Village. The 150 acre site will consist of townhomes, single-family homes, walking paths, picnic areas, a dog park and an edible garden. The first homes are expected to be ready by Summer 2021.
You can read about how Montgomery Village will be incorporating the new homes in the Village News. Full site plans can be found at BloomMV’s website. Below are some photos of the golf course just weeks before construction began.
Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, lived in Chevy Chase during her time as a Justice.
O’Connor and her husband first bought their Chevy Chase home on Oxford Street in 1992. By then, O’Connor had served on the Court for 11 years. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, she received a unanimous Senate approval, making her the first woman associate Supreme Court Justice.
Considered a moderate conservative, her vote on the Court is cited in many key cases, including upholding Roe v. Wade (1973) during the trial Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). O’Connor was also the deciding vote in Bush v. Gore.
The O’Connors sold their home in 2005 and moved to Washington D.C. O’Connor stepped down from her position in 2006.
Updated from being for sale to being sold in January 2021.
Vince McMahon’s Former MoCo Home
The Montgomery Village home that Vince, Linda, and Shane McMahon resided in the late 1960s and 70s was sold earlier this year.
According to Wikipedia, the McMahons moved to the home in 1969. Vince focused on wrestling while his wife Linda worked as a receptionist at the Covington & Burling law firm as a document translator.
Back in 2016 we wrote: “When Vince McMahon Sr. wanted to expand the then-WWWF further down the east coast, he sent his son Vince McMahon Jr. down to D.C. to run operations. Since Vince and his wife Linda couldn’t afford to live in the city, they lived in Gaithersburg. On January 15, 1970, Shane Brandon McMahon was born in Gaithersburg. About 5 years later, they moved back and forth between Connecticut and Gaithersburg until finally moving to Connecticut full-time in the early 80s.”
In recent years, Linda McMahon ran two unsuccessful Senate campaigns before being appointed the head of the Small Business Administration from 2016-2019 by Donald Trump. Vince McMahon remains the Chairman and CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment.
