Flood Sensor Project Sends Early Flood Warnings Based on Real-Time Monitoring

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) recently shared information regarding the county’s Flood Sensor Partnership– a cooperative effort among County agencies responsible for various aspects of Public Safety, Storm Event Preparedness and Response, and Emergency Management, along with the federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to install 35 next generation IoT flood sensors in flood-prone areas of the County. The flood sensors are manufactured by Intellisense and detect rising flood water levels during storm events to send early flood warnings to officials based on real-time monitoring. Council to Hold Public Hearings on Child Care Tax Credits, Forest Conservation, and More on July 8

The Montgomery County Council will meet on Tuesday, July 8 at 1:30 p.m. to hold 10 public hearings on legislative measures, including proposals on day care and child care tax credits, forest conservation, labor peace agreements, and tax incentives for affordable housing, and will also introduce a resolution supporting 14 early voting centers for the 2026 elections.

Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers Banned; $500 Fine and Online Complaint Form Available

Montgomery County’s ban on gas-powered leaf blowers took effect on July 1, 2025, following legislation passed to address concerns related to noise, emissions, and health impacts. The law prohibits the use of handheld, backpack, and walk-behind gas-powered blowers and vacuums on private and commercial properties, as well as by local government agencies. Violations of the ban carry a $500 fine. (more…)

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) and the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) are urging residents to plan ahead for a sober ride during the Fourth of July weekend, citing increased traffic risks from impaired and distracted driving. Law enforcement will increase DUI enforcement, and programs like SoberRide will offer discounted Lyft rides to promote safe travel. (more…)

Montgomery County Awarded $250K for Community Outreach on North Bethesda Transit Development

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation has received a $250,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation to support community engagement for Project Connect, a planned 13.9-acre mixed-use development near the North Bethesda Metro Station. The funding will aid outreach efforts as the County partners with WMATA and MDOT to design a transit-oriented hub with housing, retail, and improved transit and pedestrian access. (more…)
