The County Council will hold a public hearing on Bill 24-24, which proposes banning plastic carryout bags, taxing paper bags, and modifying related tax regulations, to January 14, 2025, at 1:30 p.m., with the sign-up deadline on January 13 at 2 p.m.

In October, Montgomery County Council Vice President Kate Stewart introduced the “Bring Your Own Bag” bill that would ban businesses from distributing single-use plastic bags and increase the fee on paper bags from five to 10 cents, with five cents allocated to the retailers and five cents allocated to the Water Quality Protection Charge fund.


The nomination deadline for the Montgomery County Commission for Women’s 2025 “Women Making History Award” has been extended to Thursday, December. 12. The awards honor women residents or workers for leadership and community impact, with winners recognized during Women’s History Month and at a reception. Montgomery County has announced it is advancing its zero waste goals through expanded recycling and composting programs, improved waste diversion technologies, and community engagement, achieving a 45% recycling rate—significantly above the national average of 32%. The County plans to implement advanced waste processing technologies, close its Resource Recovery Facility, and transition to more sustainable systems while maintaining current operations through a short-term contract extension. The Montgomery County Office of Food Systems Resilience (OFSR) has allocated $3,549,500 through the Fiscal Year 2025 Community Food Assistance (CFA) Program to support 48 food assistance organizations, serving nearly 165,000 residents monthly. The program aims to address food security challenges by funding organizations that provide culturally inclusive food options, strengthen local food systems, and enhance data collection and community impact.
