Montgomery County Police Responds to Accidental Discharge of BB Gun at Local Middle School on Thursday

A letter (available below) was sent home to the Silver Spring International Middle School community on Thursday, December 8th, detailing an incident involving a BB gun accidentally discharging and striking a student in the leg during the school day.

According to the letter, a 7th grade student showed a BB gun to a friend when it accidentally discharged and struck her friend in the upper thigh. There were no injuries, as the student was examined by the school nurse following the incident, and the BB gun was confiscated by school security. Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Public School Systemwide Safety reported to the school to investigate the incident. Full letter below:

Shooting at Shell Gas Station Thursday Afternoon Now Confirmed as Homicide

4:11pm Update per MCPD: MCPD PIO is en route to a confirmed homicide in the 1100 block of New Hampshire Ave.

Montgomery County Police is investigating a shooting at the Shell gas station in the 11100 block of New Hampshire Ave. According to our public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, the shooting occurred at approximately 3PM on Thursday at the White Oak Shell/Dash In gas station/convenience store on the corner of New Hampshire Avenue and Lockwood Drive in White Oak, MD (Montgomery County). MCPD Holiday Alcohol Task Force Arrest 41 People for DUI During Week 4 of Enforcement

74-Year-Old Man Reported Missing Was Found Dead in Montgomery County Sunday Morning

An alert for a missing Upper Marlboro man, 74-year-old Johnny Bouknight, was put out by Prince George’s County Police shortly after midnight early Sunday morning. The man was last seen on Saturday morning at 10am. At approximately 10:38am on Sunday morning, Bouknight was found dead in his car when Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to the 15200 block of Edwards Ferry Rd. for the report of a car in the river. “Preliminary, there is no foul play suspected”, according to Montgomery County and Prince George’s County Police. Detectives Investigate Friday Morning Homicide; Victim’s Name Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, December 2, 2022.

At approximately 3:05 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the parking lot of the Summit Hills Apartment complex, in the 8500 block of 16th St., for the report of a shooting that just occurred. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 29-year-old Nathaniel Potts, of Silver Spring, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was pronounced dead.

Community Letter Addresses Graffiti With Threatening Language at Kennedy High School

A letter (seen below) was communicated to the John F. Kennedy High School community, in Silver Spring, informing parents and guardians of an incident that occurred at school on Wednesday involving graffiti with threatening language found in the bathroom. Per the letter, the threat is not believed to be credible, but school administrators, the security team, and the community engagement police officer will continue to be visible and on high alert this week. Per MCPD: Members of the Montgomery County Police Alcohol Holiday Task Force will be devoting their full time and attention to detecting alcohol-related offenses this holiday season. During the week of November 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27, task force officers arrested 32 people for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI).

Police Investigating Hotel Death on Monday Afternoon

A person was found dead in a hotel room at Hampton Inn and Suites on North Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg at approximately 12:20pm on Monday afternoon. Montgomery County Police is conducting a standard death investigation and as of now, no foul play is suspected, per our public safety reporter Cordell Pugh.

GAITHERSBURG HOTEL DEATH INVESTIGATION: ~12:20PM Monday at the Gaithersburg (North Frederick Avenue) Hampton Inn and Suites. Person found dead inside hotel room. Police conducting standard death documentation/investigation; as of now NO foul play suspected. Rest In Peace.

Montgomery County Releases Final Recommendations from Audit of the Montgomery County Police Department

Per Montgomery County: Today, County Executive Marc Elrich was joined by Montgomery County Police Department Chief Marcus Jones and Reimagining Public Safety Task Force Member Co-Chair Bernice Mireku-North for a presentation of the final recommendations by Effective Law Enforcement for All (ELEFA) s that offer improvements in officer education, supervision, practices, accountability and public transparency. Since July 2020, ELEFA has partnered with County officials, the MCPD, the Reimagining Public Safety (RPS) Task Force, and local residents to identify, evaluate, and recommend structural and systemic improvements the Department can implement to achieve a shared vision of safe and effective law enforcement in Montgomery County. ELEFA’s audit included evaluation of the Department’s organizational culture, policies, resources, transparency, procedures and operations. The Preliminary Report issued in June 2021 identified a number of opportunities for improvement. Since then, ELEFA has continued its audit of the MCPD, working in close cooperation with MCPD and other constituent organizations.
