Montgomery County Looking Into Changing “Intimidating” Black Police Uniforms

At Thursday’s weekly media briefing, County Executive Marc Elrich said that the county is looking into changing the all black uniforms that Montgomery County Police Officers currently wear. Elrich said that there is a broad consensus that the black uniforms appear to be intimidating, and were originally “meant to be intimidating”, and that the change to a new color is a part of the “reimagining police” initiative. “It’s something that we ought to do, and it will help take some of the intimidation out of the appearance of an officer” he said.

Montgomery County is discussing alternate colors with MCPD and their union. Elrich also mentioned that black uniform are hot and that the new uniforms should be more comfortable, and that they are leaving the decision up to the department and officers. The cost of the uniform change could be more than a million dollars. Prior to the black uniforms, Montgomery County Police Officers wore khaki colored uniforms. Montgomery County Police Investigating Fatal Collision Involving 84-Year-Old Pedestrian

The operator of the Honda and several witnesses stopped and rendered aid. The pedestrian, 84-year-old Carole Barbara Weiss, was transported to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on May 17.

The initial investigation by the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) has revealed the pedestrian crossed to the center median, toward the western side of Rockledge Drive, and entered the southbound lanes of Rockledge Drive, where she was struck.

Additional Information Regarding Seventeen-Year-Old Charged in Connection With Death of Germantown Teen, Jai’Lyn Jones

A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Jai’Lyn Jones. On Monday, January 24, 2022, the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received a call for a male body found in a wooded area. Officers from the 5th District responded and located 17-year-old Jailyn Jones in the 18900 block of Grotto Lane in Germantown. An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Jones’ death a homicide.

The Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide Unit has been actively investigating Jones’ death and during the course of the investigation, physical evidence was recovered connecting Ta’Quawn Deon Henderson of Germantown, to the homicide. Detectives also learned that Henderson and Jones were acquaintances. Both attended Northwest High School.

Update: May 14, 2022 – Christopher Calderon-Esquivel has been located safe and unharmed.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 13-year-old male from Silver Spring. Christopher Calderon-Esquivel was last seen Friday, May 13, 2022 at approximately 9 a.m., leaving the 700 block of Forest Glen Road.

MCPD 100th Anniversary Celebration This Saturday at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds

Montgomery County Police will be holding a community event this Saturday, May 14, from 12-6pm at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in celebration of the departments 100th anniversary. According to MCPD, this will be the largest community event the department has ever hosted and will feature food trucks, police displays, music, face painting, and more. The event is scheduled to take place rain or shine.

Montgomery County Police Continue to Investigate 2001 Homicide of Leslie Preer

On Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at approximately 11:47 a.m., Montgomery County Police Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 4800 block of Drummond Avenue in Chevy Chase for the report of a suspicious situation. When Leslie Preer did not show up to work in the morning of May 2, 2001, her employer contacted her family members to check her welfare. Leslie’s employer and her husband responded to Leslie’s residence, where they discovered a suspicious scene. Leslie was located deceased inside of the residence with apparent trauma to her body.

Leslie Preer’s murder is an ongoing homicide investigation. The department urges anyone who has any information about this homicide to call the Major Crimes Division – Cold Case Unit at 240-773-5070 or 240-773-TIPS, or contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect(s). Callers can remain anonymous.

Detectives Investigate Pharmacy Shooting

At approximately 9:31 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the CVS Pharmacy in the 12300 block of Georgia Avenue for the report of a shooting that just occurred. Upon arrival, detectives determined that an unknown female suspect entered the CVS Pharmacy and began placing property belonging to the store in her bag. When the suspect attempted to exit the store, an employee tried to stop her by standing in front of the exterior sliding glass exit door. At that time, an unknown male suspect approached the door the employee was attempting to block and fired a handgun into the bottom panel.

The employee then allowed the female suspect to pass, and both the female and male suspect fled the scene with the stolen property.

Suspect Arrested in Home Invasion Robbery

Upon arriving in the area where the crime occurred, officers observed an individual, later identified as Zamir Wade Lynn, matching the description of the suspect in the 3100 block of Whispering Pines Dr. Officers approached Lynn and located two firearms in his possession. Lynn is prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.

Officers spoke with the male victim who stated that he was sleeping in his apartment when he was woken up by Lynn, who had just broken into the apartment. Lynn pointed two handguns at the victim and demanded money. Lynn exited the residence and was then apprehended by officers in the 3100 block of Whispering Pines Dr. Probable cause was developed to identify Lynn as the suspect. Lynn was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he has been charged with home invasion robbery, armed robbery and firearm related charges.

Two Suspects Arrested and Charged in Series of Armed Robberies and Carjackings

On Sunday, February 20, 2022, at approximately 7:08 a.m., 4th District Officers responded to the 7-Eleven store in the 3500 block of University Blvd. West for the report of an armed robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that three suspects arrived at the location in a black Honda Ridgeline, which they had just allegedly stolen from Live Oak Dr. in Montgomery County. The suspects entered the store, displayed handguns and demanded an employee to remove money from the cash register. The employee complied with the suspects’ demands. A round was fired into the store, but no one was struck. One of the suspects stole a key fob from a customer in the store. The suspects then exited the store, and one of the suspects fled the scene in the customer’s vehicle, a gray Lexus RX. The other two suspects fled in the Honda.

Lyft Driver Carjacked at Gun Point Wednesday Night

A Lyft driver was carjacked at gunpoint Wednesday night in the 8000 block of 13th St in downtown Silver Spring. According to Montgomery County Police, officers were called to the scene at approximately 10:11pm. The driver reportedly picked up three passengers, one of which pulled out a handgun and demanded the driver leave the vehicle. The three individuals then took off with the vehicle.

The incident is under investigation and Montgomery County Police are expected to release addition details soon. There are no suspects in custody at this time.
