Montgomery County has released a new report showing that Black women and infants face significantly worse maternal and infant health outcomes than other groups, including higher rates of severe maternal morbidity, postpartum depression, and infant mortality. Commissioned by Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles, the report highlights systemic disparities in healthcare access and calls for urgent, equitable reforms ahead of Black Maternal Health Week.

Today, Nicholas John Roske, 29, of Simi Valley, California, pled guilty to attempting to kill a United States Supreme Court Justice. As part of his guilty plea, Roske admitted that on June 7, 2022, he flew from Los Angeles International Airport to Dulles International Airport with a firearm and ammunition in his checked baggage. He then took a taxi from the airport to Montgomery County, Maryland, with the intent to kill the Supreme Court Justice.
Montgomery County government has approved legislation and zoning changes to expedite and incentivize the conversion of highly vacant office buildings into housing, including a 20-year tax abatement for projects that provide at least 17.5 percent affordable units. (more…)

Continuing from the report earlier this year that showed significant reductions in many crime categories in 2024 compared to 2023, the Downtown Silver Spring area has maintained its downward trend in most areas into the first quarter of 2025, according to 3rd District Commander Jason Cokinos.
The Montgomery County Council is extending the application deadline to April 21, 2025, for individuals interested in serving as a Council representative on the Boards overseeing the County’s employee retirement and retiree health benefits trust funds, which manage over $6.9 billion in assets.
