Montgomery County Announces $1 Million in Grant Funding for Small, Emerging and Volunteer-Led Nonprofit Organizations to Support Grassroots Projects

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and the Montgomery County Council have announced that $1 million in grants is available through the new Community Projects Fund to assist small, emerging and volunteer-led nonprofits in implementing community focused projects, initiatives and events. The first round of grants, totaling $250,000, is open now. The opportunity will be reopened later in Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) with at least $250,000 available in each quarter to support new community needs and opportunities.

Awards will be prioritized to nonprofit organizations with fewer than three employees and annual budgets of $250,000 or less. Nonprofits do not need to be based in Montgomery County to apply, but all projects must occur within the County or be exclusively focused on County residents.

Madden Ratings For NFL Players With MoCo Ties

Madden NFL (known as John Madden Football until 1993) is a popular football video game named after the late Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and commentator, John Madden. Every August, the game releases its newest installment and the weeks leading up to the release feature the introduction of the players’ “Madden rating” to start the season. Below, we’ll take a look at the Madden ratings for some of the NFL players with ties to Montgomery County:

Cam Brown: The Silver Spring native and Bullis graduate is an outside linebacker with the New York Giants. He has an Overall Rating of 63 with scores in the 80s for speed, acceleration, jumping, and toughness.

Real Progress at Montgomery County’s First Wawa

Coming soon signage for Wawa went up at 405 S Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg earlier this summer and some much anticipated progress has been made as the frame of the convenience store and gas pumps are now up. if progress continues at the current pace, we would not be surprised to see Wawa open by the end of 2023.

The convenience store/gas station will be located at the site of the old Becraft Antiques on 355, across from Gaithersburg High School. Wawa began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa, in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products.

Statement From County Executive Marc Elrich on Montgomery County Police Officer Response in Aspen Hill Incident

“A very serious incident occurred today in Aspen Hill that resulted in four victims being stabbed and the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) utilizing lethal force to prevent a knife-wielding suspect from harming more people, including officers. I want to thank the MCPD officers for their rapid response to the incidents and their dogged pursuit of the suspect. Their efforts very likely prevented further assaults and may well have saved lives.

As with any police-involved shooting, a thorough investigation will be conducted by the Maryland Attorney General’s office. It is essential that we uphold the principles of transparency and accountability in every case including this one. The Attorney General’s office will be responsible for determining when to release the names of those involved as well as any video associated with the incident. I encourage them to do so in a timely manner.

Multiple Injuries After Possible Stabbing; Suspect Shot by Police on Saturday Morning

Per Montgomery County Police: “MCPD 4th District officers are on scene of an officer involved shooting in the 4300 block of Havard Street. The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has been notified and are enroute. The scene is secured and there is not a current threat to the community.”

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer tweeted that MCFRS “assisted injured persons (from assault) found in several nearby locations within close proximity, @MCFRS_EMIHS transported at least 4 patients to local hospitals.”

The Fair is a Family Friendly event that provides agricultural education and entertainment to children of all ages. Carrying firearms, weapons, smoking, vaping, and inappropriate behavior are prohibited.

Answers to Some Frequently Asked Questions About Recreational Marijuana Now Being Legal in Maryland

The Maryland General Assembly, during its 2023 session, approved legalization of recreational use of cannabis for adults 21-and-over. The law went into effect on July 1, but many residents still have questions about details in the law. Among the most common questions refer to being able to use cannabis in public areas and how its use can lead to impaired driving.

Smoking cannabis (and hemp) is prohibited in any public place. This includes outdoor spaces and indoor spaces open to the public including parks, streets and sidewalks, bars and restaurants, public transportation (e.g, buses, vans, trains, taxicabs, limousines) and indoor places of employment. Because cannabis remains illegal at the Federal level, a person may not possess cannabis on any Federal property, such as national park.

Free Computer Distribution Program Underway for Low-Income Families and Expanded Free Home or Mobile Internet

“Montgomery Connects,” Montgomery County’s digital equity and inclusion program, has launched a new program to distribute 34,000 free laptop computers to low-income families. There is a limit of one computer per address. Eligible recipients must be Maryland residents, but do not need to be U.S. citizens.

Montgomery County received a Maryland Connected Devices grant valued at $7 million dollars to distribute 34,000 Chromebook laptops to low-income households. Appointments to receive a computer can be made at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/computer.

Happening This Weekend: 2023 Montgomery County Farm Tour

The 2023 Montgomery County Farm Tour and Harvest Sale on Saturday and Sunday, July 22-23, will be a unique opportunity for residents to explore 21 select farms in the County’s Agricultural Reserve, shop local, enjoy fresh food, see farm animals and learn about farming as a way of life. The Farm Tour will offer a chance to visit select farms, some of which are only open to the public during this special weekend event.
