Montgomery County Council Meets on June 27 at 9 a.m. and Will Sit as the Board of Health to Receive Bi-Annual Public Health Update

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Council will meet on Tuesday, June 27 at 9 a.m. and the meeting will begin with two proclamation presentations. The first proclamation, presented by Council President Evan Glass and the full Council, commemorates Pride Month. The second proclamation presentation, led by Councilmember Natali Fani-González and County Executive Marc Elrich, recognizes Mike Riley, Director of Montgomery Parks, and the Parks Department, for their award-winning natural grass fields program.

At 12 p.m., Councilmember Fani-González and County Executive Elrich will present a proclamation recognizing Officer Harry A. Dunn. More detail on each agenda item is provided below.

M&T Announces September Closure of Friendship Heights Branch

M&T Bank has announced that their Friendship Heights location & ATM, at the corner of Willard and Wisconsin Avenues, will be permanently closing on Friday, September 22, 2023. M&T Bank has posted signage about the closure at its Friendship Heights branch and mailed letters to customers informing them of the upcoming closure.

According to M&T, “As our customers’ needs and banking habits evolve, we regularly review the locations of our branches, particularly when they are close to one another, to ensure that we are providing the best service possible. At this time, we have decided to close our Friendship Heights Branch at 5416 Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase on Friday, September 22, 2023 at noon.”

One Person in Custody, Two Victims Transported to Hospital With Serious Injuries After Domestic Incident in Bethesda

An arrest was made on Monday morning stemming from an incident that closed Greentree Rd. in Bethesda and involved heavy police presence for several hours overnight. According to Police, “MCPD responded to the 6500 block of Greentree Road for the report of a domestic-related assault. Two adult victims were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening but serious injuries. The suspect has been taken into custody. There is no threat to the community at this time.”

County Council Committees to Review Anti-Rent Gouging Legislation and a Bill That Would Repeal the Policing Advisory Commission on June 26

Per Montgomery County: The Economic Development (ECON) Committee will meet on Monday, June 26 at 9:30 a.m. and will receive an update on the Economic Development Fund. The members of the ECON Committee include Chair Natali Fani-González, Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe, Council President Evan Glass and Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles.

The joint ECON and Public Safety (PS) Committee will meet at 11 a.m. to review Executive Regulation 04-23: Police-Private Security Camera Incentive Program.

Severe Weather Expected for Entire DMV Monday Afternoon

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), there is increased confidence in severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds on Monday afternoon. Latest update from the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (NWSSPC) has brought an Enhanced Risk for severe storms along/east of the I-95 corridor. Per the NWS, we “have multiple ways to get warnings tomorrow.”

The Capital Weather Gang tweeted that there is an “ENHANCED (level 3 out of 5) risk of severe storms in DC area Monday afternoon-evening — not too common. Damaging winds, large hail and a tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Stay weather aware Monday…”

Montgomery Planning is exploring the relationship between burial grounds and surrounding landscapes to better understand these sites and find graveyards whose locations have been lost. Cemeteries are important because they are valued by descendants and may hold valuable information about people’s lives historians and genealogists cannot find anywhere else. Since 2017, county law has required Planning staff to keep an inventory of all the graveyards in the county.

Montgomery County Featured in Latest Episode of ‘Catching Killers’ on Netflix

The Netflix series ‘Catching Killers’ focuses on the investigators behind infamous serial killer cases who reveal the harrowing, chilling details of their extraordinary efforts. The latest episode of the series (season 3, episode 4), follows retired Montgomery County detective Terry Ryan as he takes you through his experience with the D.C. sniper murders that began in Montgomery County.

At 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2002, a shot was fired through the window of a Michaels craft store in Aspen Hill. The bullet narrowly missed Ann Chapman, a cashier at the store. Since no one was injured, the shot was assumed to be random, and no serious alarms were raised. Approximately one hour later, at 6:30 p.m., James Martin, a 55-year-old program analyst at NOAA, was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse grocery store located in Glenmont.

Wine Enthusiast Names MoCo Lite The Best Light Beer in the Country

Wine Enthusiast has ranked MoCo Lite, the collaboration between The MoCoShow and Lone Oak Brewing Company, the best light beer in the country.

In the article titled ‘The Best Light Beer to Drink Right Now‘, Wine Enthusiast gives MoCo Lite the highest rating out of all light beers in the country- scoring a 91. “There’s a joke that light beer is nearly water but not as flavorful. This pale straw yellow lager pours clear as a bell with a robust head and delivers on soft grain-forward refreshment. Drink all day without palate fatigue.”

MoCo’s Abby Meyers Makes Her WNBA Debut With The Washington Mystics

Abby Meyers is Whitman High School’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,700 points and was the Ivy League Player of the Year last year before transferring to the University of Maryland for her senior season. On Tuesday, she signed a hardship contract with the Washington Mystics Tuesday. Meyers, who was a captain in her only year with the Terps, was drafted 11th overall in the first round of the WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings, but was waived prior to the start of the season.

A hardship contract is commonly used when a team has fewer than 10 players available for a game. The Mystics are on a three-game winning streak and Meyers scored 2 points in 6 minutes in her debut– the team’s most recent game on Thursday. I’m the video below, Meyers talks about what it’s like playing in the DMV again, “woke up in my own house that I grew up in, and drove down a few blocks to get here.”

To-Go Alcohol Sales End on June 30th in Maryland

Back in May 2021, Governor Larry Hogan signed a bill into law that gave a two year extension on the sale of alcohol via delivery and carryout by licensed restaurants. That extension ends at the end of this month (June 2023) and to-go sales of alcohol will end in the state of Maryland.

The Montgomery County ABS, which regulates the sale of liquor in Montgomery County, passed a temporary resolution back on March 24, 2020 that allows holders of on-premise licenses to sell for carry out and delivery. This was one way restaurants were able to stay afloat during the pandemic while dining rooms were shut down. The new bill, SB205, replaced the temporary resolution in July 2021 for two years. Montgomery County’s ABS confirmed via phone call that to-go sales via delivery and carry-out would end on Friday, June 30th.

Reminder: Montgomery County Minimum Wage Will Increase on July 1 to $16.70 Per Hour for Large Employers

Per Montgomery County: The minimum wage will again increase in Montgomery County on July 1. Sponsored by then-County Council member, and current County Executive, Marc Elrich and signed into legislation on Nov. 17, 2017, Bill 28-17raises the minimum wage incrementally each July 1.

Based on the consumer price index for all urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI-W) for Washington, D.C.-Arlington-Alexandria area, the Montgomery County Chief Administrative Officer has set the rate for the increase of minimum wage for July 2023 for large employers (those with 51 employees or more) at $16.70 per hour.
