Asian American Health Initiative’s Healthy Communities Fund Awards $830,000 to Programs for the Asian American Community

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s Asian American Health Initiative(AAHI), one of the three minority health initiatives that are part of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, has awarded 10 local organizations a total of $830,000 from their Healthy Communities Fund. The funding will be used to develop new and sustain existing culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services in behavioral health, senior wellness and health and social support services for the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.

 AAPI communities are very diverse and have unique challenges collectively and individually. With 15 different Asian American subgroups in the community, and unique needs in each subgroup, programing must be tailored for each subgroup with consideration to the language and culture of the population being served.

Six Will Become Newest Members of Montgomery’s Human Rights Hall of Fame in Ceremonies on Sunday, Nov. 20

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich today applauded the selection six individuals—each with different backgrounds, but all of whom have made significant contributions to the County’s legacy—who will become the newest members of the County’s Human Rights Hall of Fame at induction ceremonies on Sunday, Nov. 20, in Germantown. The12th biennial event will see the inductions of Daryl Davis, Rev. Dr. Philip W. Davis Sr. (posthumously), Dr. Jeremiah Floyd, Janice Freeman, Willie Pearl Mackey King and Charles L. (Chuck) Short.

The Human Rights Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made great personal sacrifices in contributing to human and civil rights in Montgomery County, either as trailblazers of the past or as current light bearers in the struggle. This year’s honorees were selected among nominations made by community members. A committee of current Human Rights Hall of Fame members reviewed the nominations and selected the new members. The honorees will be recognized for their visionary leadership, outstanding achievements and altruism on the road to eliminating discrimination and advancing human rights in ceremonies starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the BlackRock Center for the Arts. The center is located at 12901 Town Commons Dr. in Germantown.

MCPS: Crossing Guards Needed to Keep Our Community Safe

The Montgomery County Police Department has openings for crossing guards. The position involves helping schoolchildren and other pedestrians cross the street, and providing traffic control at designated crossings. The Montgomery County Police Crossing Guard position involves the safe crossing of school children, other pedestrians, and control of traffic at designated crossings.

Contacts include school children and other pedestrians to issue instructions, such as when to proceed/stop; police officers to report motorists who do not comply with traffic laws; and school officials to report children and motorists who fail to obey instructions of the employee. Direct, routine assistance is provided to pedestrians and/or vehicles at busy intersections. Work may also be performed at other places, such as church crossings, walking field trips, or for special community County-wide events and emergencies. Work is performed independently with periodic checks by police officers at the crossing(s) to which the employee is assigned.

A Winning Fall Season for MCPS Student Athletes

The Poolesville HS boys cross country team and the Damascus HS cheerleading team won their respective 2A State Championship titles over the weekend. This is the first-ever cheerleading championship title for MCPS.

Congratulations to teams who also made it to the championship finals – Winston Churchill HS boys’ cross country and girls’ field hockey, Walter Johnson HS girls’ cross country, Poolesville girls’ cross country, and Sherwood High School’s cheerleading team which came in third.

Detectives Investigate Theft; Release Surveillance Photos of Suspects

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – 4th District Patrol Investigations Unit (PIU) are investigating a theft that occurred in the 13000 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring. Detectives have released surveillance photos of the suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them (photos below).

On Friday, October 14, 2022, at approximately 2:15 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for the report of a theft that occurred earlier. The initial investigation revealed that sometime between Tuesday, October 11, 2022, and Thursday, October 13, 2022, unknown suspects entered the victim’s residence and stole her wallet and personal property.

Fourth Teen Arrested in Connection with Germantown Homicide

Per MCPD: A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the Friday, April 22, 2022, homicide of 20-year-old Taon Lamont Cline on Gunners Branch Road in Germantown.

During the course of the investigation, Major Crimes detectives discovered evidence connecting 17-year-old, Daylon Windell Miller of Germantown, to the April 22 homicide. Miller was arrested on Thursday, November 17, 2022.

Detectives Asking for Public’s Assistance in Locating Missing 76-Year-Old Woman

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 76-year-old female from Chevy Chase. On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Majorie Robinson Seides was last seen in the area of I-495 and I-95. She is driving a silver 2017 Subaru Forrester bearing Maryland license plate 3CX9300.

Seides is 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs approximately 135 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Police and family are concerned for her welfare. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Majorie Robinson Seides is asked to call the 2nd District Investigative Section at (240) 773- 6700 (24-hour line) or call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line).
