Montgomery County Council Meeting on Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m. to Welcome Six New Councilmembers as Part of an 11-Member Council With Increased Representation for County Residents and the Most Women Leaders in Council History

Per MCPD: The Montgomery County Council will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m. This will be the first meeting of the 20^th Council which includes Council President Gabe Albornoz, Vice President Evan Glass and Councilmembers Marilyn Balcombe, Natali Fani-Gonzáles, Andrew Friedson, Will Jawando, Sidney Katz, Dawn Luedtke, Kristin Mink, Laurie-Anne Sayles and Kate Stewart. The meeting will begin with comments from Council President Albornoz reflecting on his year leading the Council, as he concludes his one-year term. The Council will also elect a new Council president and vice president to serve one-year terms.

Additionally, the Council will review and take positions on proposed state legislation. More detail on each agenda item is provided below.

The 20th Montgomery County Council Has Taken Office

The 20th Montgomery County Council has officially taken office after being sworn in this morning. They begin their work immediately and have a Council meeting on Tuesday in Rockville. The inauguration ushered in the 20th Council under the County’s current form of government. The current County Council has nine members—four at-large and five district Councilmembers. Voters approved a Charter Amendment to change the Council composition to 11 members—four at-large and seven district Councilmembers. The Council districts were reapportioned to accommodate the new districts.

The Councilmembers include incumbents Gabe Albornoz (at-large), Evan Glass (at-large), Will Jawando (at-large), Andrew Friedson (new District 1) and Sidney Katz (new District 3). Newly elected Councilmembers include Laurie-Anne Sayles (at-large), Marilyn Balcombe (new District 2), Kate Stewart (new District 4), Kristin Mink (new District 5), Natali Fani-González (new District 6) and Dawn Luedtke (new District 7).

Kalaii Griffin II (Walter Johnson, Class of 2013) and his Company ShredSkinz Make Shark Tank Appearance (SPOILERS)

Kalaii Griffin II is a 2013 graduate of Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda where he was a two sport letter winner in football and wrestling. He went on to the University of Texas at El Paso, where he played Division I football and earned his B.A. in Communications. Now Griffin is the founder and CEO of ShredSkinz, the world’s first and only single use & recyclable sauna suit, and his company made an appearance on Shark Tank earlier this week (spoilers below). ‘

Kalaii explained that he created his ShredSkinz sauna suits in a way that is convenient for those using them. He has added elastic to the bottom and the wrist area and a draw string on the hood to allow those working out in a ShredSkinz suit to maximize how much they sweat. He goes on to clarify that this is not marketed as a way to lose weight, but rather as a convenient way to maximize workouts by increasing the amount of weight, ideal for cutting weight for a fight, etc. Griffin mentions his success on TIkTok, primarily due to videos of ShredSkinz users showing their sweat fall out of the suit.

Rocket Launch Will Be Visible (Weather Permitting) on Friday, December 9th

Per NASA: NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility will support the launch of Rocket Lab USA’s first Electron rocket from Virginia at 6 p.m. EST, Friday, Dec. 9.

The mission, named “Virginia is for Launch Lovers,” will deploy radio frequency monitoring satellites for HawkEye 360. The 59-foot-tall Electron rocket will lift off from Launch Complex 2 at Virginia Space’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island. The launch window for the mission is 6 to 8 p.m. The backup launch days are Dec. 10 to 20.

For Sixth Year, Rockville Nets Full 100 Points for LGBTQ+ Support

Per the City of Rockville: Rockville has scored 100 marks for the city’s commitment to the health, welfare, safety and equality of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community in its sixth year of participating, and the 11th year for the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index.

Rockville scored 95 out of 100, plus an additional 10 bonus points, for its nondiscrimination laws, law enforcement, employment and workplace inclusivity, leadership and services to the LGBTQ+ community. Final scores cannot exceed 100.

Damascus Defeats Oakdale to Win 3A Maryland Football State Championship

Damascus defeated Oakdale 21-14 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis on Saturday night to win the school’s 12th State Championship, tying Seneca Valley for the Maryland state record. Damascus has appeared in 17 State Championship games.

The Swarmin’ Hornets jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half before taking a 21-0 lead in the third quarter on a Dunathan touchdown run. Oakdale came back down the field to score a touchdown and make it 21-7 going into the 4th quarter. After a few stops for each team, Oakdale scores a touchdown with just under 4 minutes left in the game to cut the lead to 21-14. The onside kick attempt was not successful and Damascus was able to get two first downs to run out the clock and win the game.

Damascus Takes On Oakdale For the 3A Maryland Football State Championship

The Damascus Swarmin’ Hornets take on the Oakdale Bears tonight at 7pm at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis for the 3A Maryland State Championship.

The Swarmin’ Hornets defeated River Hill 42-7 in the semifinals. RB Dillon Dunathan rushed for 245 yards and 4 touchdowns in the win. Oakdale, from Frederick County, defeated St. Charles 27-22. Damascus will be appearing in their 17th State Final and will be attempting to win their 12th State championship, which would tie the state record currently held by Seneca Valley.

Detectives Investigate Friday Morning Homicide; Victim’s Name Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, December 2, 2022.

At approximately 3:05 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the parking lot of the Summit Hills Apartment complex, in the 8500 block of 16th St., for the report of a shooting that just occurred. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 29-year-old Nathaniel Potts, of Silver Spring, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was pronounced dead.
