County Executive Marc Elrich will not announce Phase Three of MoCo’s reopening plan until about a week after the July 4 weekend, he said on Wednesday. Phase Three allows limited openings of concerts and theaters and decreased distancing requirements for gyms, places of worship, and other indoor gatherings.

Elrich and MoCo Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles are delaying Phase Three to give officials time to analyze data and check for emerging hotspots of cases following the holiday weekend.


MoCo Fire and Rescue Services has repeatedly urged residents this week to remember that all fireworks and sparklers are illegal here. According to Chief Scott Goldstein, fireworks can injure bystanders, start fires, and scare pets.

Instead, tune in to “United Montgomery, Stronger Together” on Friday, July 3 at 8 PM to view a fireworks show, hear messages from elected officials, and listen to local musicians. MoCo had previously canceled in-person fireworks shows.


Rep. Raskin’s Democracy Summer to hold an event with prominent Black activists.

Democracy Summer PAC, founded by Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD), is holding a virtual event today (July 2) at 4 PM titled “The Politics of a New Reconstruction.” The left-leaning PAC will invite Reverend William J. Barber II and Bob Moses to speak.


The Montgomery County Government announced that the county’s minimum wage will increase starting this Wednesday, July 1.  The increase is dependent on the number of employees that each company has:

This is part of a yearly increase from a bill that was signed back in 2017– this bill states that an increase will occur every July 1 until minimum wage reaches $15 an hour in 2022.


With coronavirus continuing to keep everyone stuck inside, now seems like the best time to foster animals.

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Derwood has said that they have experienced “an overwhelming amount of community support and foster inquiries”, and that applications for fostering are now taking up to 2 weeks to process.


Farmers markets in Montgomery County remain open for community-oriented, adventurous alternatives to grocery shopping.

Hosted in various large outdoor spaces throughout the county, tents are spaced to comply with social distancing guidelines so shoppers are able to support local businesses while getting a breath of fresh air. One such market is the Bethesda Market, which is known as one of the largest farmers markets in the region, and boasts over 50 vendors.
