Brief History of Anchor Inn (Wheaton)

The Anchor Inn was one of the most popular restaurants in MoCo for 50 years. Established in 1954 in the heart of Wheaton, The Anchor Inn was one of the first places in Montgomery County to apply for and receive their liquor license in 1964.

“Anchor Inn was part of traditions for many others in the community, said Scaggs, such as the Colesville Lions Club, Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce, Good Counsel High School and the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad. The fund-raisers, high school events and community fellowship were a part of the family’s service to the area apart from serving quality food.”

Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman (D) Hosts Rally For Governor Larry Hogan (R) at Barking Mad Cafe

Ashman, a Democrat, made waves last week when he wrote an article for Maryland Matters crossing party lines and publicly endorsing Maryland’s Republican Governor.

The event was well-attended by a couple hundred people and featured Governor Hogan addressing the crowd in Gaithersburg. Both Ashman and Hogan spoke against partisanship in Washington.

MoCo Spotlight: Z&Z (The Dubbaneh Family)

Issa Dubbaneh immigrated to the United States from Palestine in 1977 to pursue a college education at the University of Maryland. In 1981, during his final year, he decided to leave school to open his first restaurant, Chicken Basket, in Gaithersburg. Together with his brothers, Issa expanded their venture, opening additional Chicken Basket locations in Layhill, Wheaton, and Rockville. Since the 1980s, the family has owned six different Chicken Basket locations in Montgomery County, along with Muna’s Cafe in Germantown a few years back.

Muna Dubbaneh was born and raised in Jordan before moving to Wheaton with her family in 1980. She met Issa a couple of years later, and they soon married. While working in the restaurants, they raised five children—Ronnie (31), Danny (29), Ronia (27), Johnny (25), and Deanna (21)—constantly reminding them to steer clear of the food and restaurant industry. For most of their lives, the children heeded this advice.

MoCo School Board Approves Plan To Offer Condoms In Health Rooms Of All High Schools

This decision comes on the heels of MoCo health officials declaring a “public health crisis” with the increase of sexually transmitted infections in adolescents and young adults.

The most recent data showed a 17.5% increase in chlamydia cases and a 29% increase in gonorrhea cases in the county.

He told me that he recently went to a place in Bethesda that was able to use a procedure called SMP (scalp micropigmentation) to make it appear as though he had a full head of hair.

It looked great, and I could tell how happy and excited he was. He told me the place was called Scalp Allure and I knew I had to check it out.

J’amie Kirlew, the person who was able to snap the photos, captioned them with “‪A couple is casually sitting in lawn chairs on 270 between W. Montgomery & Falls drinking wine. We had to turn around and around to capture these pics.‬”

It didn’t take long after we shared the photos for one of the people in them to be tagged. I was able to ask her a few questions and get to the bottom of this local mystery.

Vegas Weighs In On Amazon HQ2 Location

Oddsshark.com and Bovada have released their odds on which city will win the bid for Amazon HQ2. The winning city/area will get about 50,000 high paying jobs. The article states that “Amazon estimates its investments in Seattle added an additional $38 billion to the city’s economy.”

According to the Vegas odds, Northern Virginia comes in first at +240. Washington D.C. comes in second at +350, and Austin is third at +400.

MoCo Based Cava To Acquire Zoe’s Kitchen For $300 Million

According to Reuter’s, CAVA will pay $12.75 per share (a 33% premium to the 8/16/18 closing price). CAVA opened its 64th fast casual restaurant in Potomac Yards in DC earlier this week. This deal could potentially bring them up to over 300 locations. the purchase will be financed through a significant equity investment in Cava led by Act III Holdings, the investment vehicle create by Ron Shaich, founder, chairman, and former CEO of Panera Bread, and take Zoes private. After closing, Shaich will serve as chairman of the combined company. Brett Schulman, current CEO of Cava, will take over the same role to “work closely with the existing leadership teams at Zoes Kitchen and Cava to oversee their growth and evolution.

There are currently 3 Zoes Kitchen locations in MoCo– In Gaithersburg, Germantown, and Park Potomac.
