Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Police- 4th District Patrol Investigation Unit (PIU) are investigating a theft from auto that occurred on Thursday, April 6, 2023, in the 4000 block of Gelding Lane in Olney. Detectives have released surveillance video of the two suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them.  The initial investigation has revealed that two unknown suspects forced entry into the victim’s vehicle. The suspects stole credit cards which were used to purchase prepaid debit cards at a retail store in Washington D.C. The suspects arrived and left in a small gray car, possibly a ride share, driven by another unknown individual.

The first suspect is described as a thin White male, wearing a mask, gray sweatpants and a black sweatshirt.  The second suspect is described as an unknown race female with black hair, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, red shorts and carrying a bag.  This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

The initial investigation has revealed that a white Ford Fusion with minor front end damage was observed in the bus turn-around of the parking lot at Brooke Grove Elementary School. Multiple individuals were observed in and around the vehicle. An unknown Black male suspect, who was observed outside of Ford, discharged a firearm multiple times and then left the scene on foot. No one was injured during the shooting. The vehicle was then seen driving away from the scene.  This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Beef was last week’s #1 series on Netflix. The show is about a near-accident in a parking lot that turns two strangers into enemies. The argument, or “beef”, quickly develops to escalating acts of revenge as Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) learn about each other’s identities and families and become more and more involved in each other’s lives. The role of Danny’s younger brother, Paul, is played by MoCo native Young Mazino.

Mazino is a Silver Spring native and graduated from Sherwood in 2009, where he excelled in track & field. He has previously been in shows like Prodigal Son, Blue Bloods and New Amsterdam, but Beef marks what’s likely Mazino’s most popular role to date. In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Mazino mentioned growing up in Maryland  and developing an interest in music and acting at a very young age. “Growing up as a kid I played the violin and I was performing just seemingly endlessly in concerts and recitals,” he told PEOPLE. “Since elementary school, I was always participating in the school plays,” he said, recalling of his early experience acting, “that feeling was electric, just getting to be outside of myself.”

Nearly six years after our first poll on the pronunciation of Olney, our very own Mr. MoCo revisited the topic with polls on Twitter and Instagram (see video below). The two most popular pronunciations, “ole-knee” and “all-knee” were the two options for the polls and the result was pretty similar to our 2017 poll with “ole-knee” coming out on top pretty decisively (results can be seen below).

We’ve noticed that many of those who grew up in or very close to Olney tend to pronounce it as “all-knee”, while just about everyone else goes with the more popular “ole-knee.” Olney, originally named Mechanicsville, officially became Olney in the early to mid 1800s (named after the Olney House…which was named after Olney, England). Olney, the English city that Olney, MD is essentially named after, is pronounced Ole-nee in England…with a bit of an accent of course, which supports what most voters went with.

“My parents encouraged me to go to college, but I had no guidance on it as a first-generation student,” said Dr. Erwin Hesse, Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of Admissions Gambit. Raised in a low-income, immigrant parent household, Dr. Hesse overcame various obstacles during his K-12 years. Barely graduating high school, his counselor told him his only two options were to “get a job or join the military.” Instead, Dr. Hesse enrolled at Montgomery College and earned two associates degrees, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, a masters degree from the University of Baltimore, and a doctorate in education from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Hesse has worked in admissions offices at Maryland, Johns Hopkins, and Georgetown for over a decade reviewing thousands of applications, transcripts, and essays. In his last role at Amazon, Dr. Hesse created and led a national engagement program recruiting students from minority serving institutions to coveted tech and non-tech roles.

“This grant is a game changer for our students and their families. We feel honored to receive this prestigious grant and stand ready to make an impact in our community,” said Andrea Hesse, Cofounder and Chief Operating Officer of Admissions Gambit. Of a similar background to her husband, Mrs. Hesse faced great adversity to fund her secondary education, bachelor’s degree from University of Maryland, and graduate degree from University of Baltimore. She credits her education as the stepping stone to a fulfilling career in editing, marketing, and project management. “Many counseling departments are overworked and understaffed,” details Dr. Hesse. Unfortunately, the average high school counselor to student ratio in the US is 482-to-1. Admissions Gambit provides students and their parents a year-round educational consultant. Its services include advising on course selection, extracurricular activities, internships, summer programs, college choices, mock interviews, brainstorming essay topics, essay review sessions, and any other college admissions topic.

The MoCo natives behind Passion for Ezra posted the following on social media when it was announced the shoes they created for Donna Kelce, whose sons Jason and Travis played against each other in the Super Bowl earlier this year, would be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, “It’s official we made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame… we’ve waited for this to be announced officially! We will be getting our tickets to Canton today ❤️”

Proud momma Donna Kelce was interviewed by GQ magazine prior to the Super Bowl. During the interview, she was wearing a half Chiefs half Eagles jacket that was created by a business that is owned and operated by MoCo natives. “This is a jacket that Passion For Ezra put together. The Eagles on one sleeve and the Chiefs on the other. And then on the back—I don’t know if you can see—the names and then the two logos for the Chiefs and the Eagles. So this is really fun, this jean jacket. I really love it.” In addition to the jacket created for Mrs. Kelce, Passion For Ezra made a custom pair of shoes- Philadelphia Eagles on the left foot and Kansas City Chiefs on the right. The shoes have made it to the Hall of Fame, along with a custom split jersey Kelce wore while cheering on her sons.

The wait is almost over as the highly anticipated Salt & Vine has announced a Spring 2023 opening (exact date not yet available). It will be taking over the Olney House, which was previously the home of Ricciuti’s at 3308 Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. Initially, things didn’t move as quickly as anticipated due to Covid delays. Then the permitting process moved at a slower pace due to the historical significance of the building, but the restaurant is now hiring ahead of its planned opening within the next few months.

The pre-Civil War “lone oak” white oak tree at Lone Oak Farm Brewery has fallen after sustaining damage from high winds the last two days. Lone Oak Brewery made the announcement on their social media this morning after losing their farm’s namesake. Below is the statement by Lone Oak (video tribute below that):
