Almost 1 million people have seen the original tweet by MoCo native and ESPN SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt, asking for help after his dog, Redd, got out of a doggy daycare on Friday afternoon in Rockville/North Bethesda. “Heads up to anyone in Rockville, Md. area: Redd somehow got out of the Dogtopia on Wyaconda Rd. Rhodesian Ridgeback, about 65 pounds. He’s chipped. White front left paw and white markings on chest Please keep an eye out or an ear if you hear of anyone who might have found a puppy”
At 10:37pm, after hundreds of retweets and his tweet being seen by hundreds of thousands of people, Van Pelt announced that Redd was found. “Oh my goodness, they found him!!!! An army of people apparently on the case. I can’t even begin to connect the dots. I’m sitting here in tears on a plane headed home and Redd is gonna be there to greet me. I can’t believe it & I can’t thank everyone enough for their kindness.”
Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Investigations Division (SID) and Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) have arrested and charged 22-year-old Erik Calderon Pereira, of Olney, with third-degree sexual offense and sexual solicitation of a minor for engaging in illicit sex acts with a minor between December 2021 and February 2023. Detectives have released a photo of the suspect, Calderon, and are asking any victims to come forward.
In January 2023, detectives initiated an investigation after receiving a complaint about a 15-year-old juvenile female who had allegedly been given drugs in exchange for illicit sex acts. Through the investigation, detectives identified Calderon as the suspect and determined that he gave drugs several times to the 15-year-old juvenile female who would in return preformed illicit sex acts on him. On Monday, February 27, 2023, an arrest warrant was obtained for Calderon. On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, Calderon was arrested in Olney and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was released on a $20,000 unsecured personal bond.
Per the Olney Theatre: Olney Theatre Center is adding a performance of its hit production of Kinky Boots on Wednesday, March 22 at 8:00 pm and donating proceeds from the evening to two partner organizations. MoCo Pride Center is the latest participant in Olney Theatre’s Community Partners Program, which seeks to deepen the theatre’s connections with local non-profits that are aligned with the theatre’s mission and values. Parasol Patrol was instrumental in the success of Olney Theatre Center’s recent Drag Story Hour event at the Olney branch of the Montgomery County Public Library. More than 100 Parasol Patrol volunteers showed up with rainbow flags and umbrellas to welcome the dozens of families who came to enjoy story hour with Drag Queen D’Manda Martini.
Tickets for the performance are $47-$79 and can be purchased at www.olneytheatre.org or by calling the box office at 301-924-3400. Discounts are available for students, seniors, active military, and first responders. The production is currently running through March 26 in the Mainstage Theatre.
According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Robert Greenberg sentenced defendant, Maritza Ramirez, 57, of Germantown to five years in prison suspend all but 18 months and five years of supervised probation upon release. Ramirez was also ordered to pay $7,700 in restitution to the families of victims she stole from. Ramirez was a 14-year employee of Marian Assisted Living, located in the 19100 block of Georgia Avenue. On November 29, 2022, she pleaded guilty to Financial Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adults in a Scheme.
The investigation began in March of 2022 when one victim’s family discovered that while their relative, a resident at Marian, underwent surgery and recovery, several items of jewelry and a cell phone had gone missing from the secured bedroom. The ensuing investigation by Montgomery County Police uncovered at least 11 victims and pawn shop records which show that between 2015 and 2022 Ramirez received at least $7,700 by selling 81 items including jewelry and several designer purses. Chief of our Special Prosecutions Unit, Assistant State’s Attorney Bryan Roslund prosecuted this case.”
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is investing in a well connected pedestrian and bicycle network which enriches the livability of a community. Therefore, MCDOT is implementing bicycle facilities such as off road shared use paths, which serve as critical links in the transportation system, providing access to residential areas, transit, commercial districts, schools, places of worship, parks, and recreation areas.
MCDOT has initiated preliminary design for the Emory Lane and Muncaster Mill Road (MD 115) Shared Use Path Project from Holly Ridge Road to Muncaster Mill Road at the proposed North Branch Trail in order to provide safer bicycle and pedestrian access between the ICC bike path along Georgia Avenue and the proposed North Branch Trail/Rock Creek Regional Park. On February 20th, 2023 at approximately 12:21am, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to the area of the 14000 block of Shirley Bohn Road, Frederick County, Maryland, along with Deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Officers from the Mt. Airy Police Department, and Emergency Medical Personnel for the report of a stabbing that occurred during a party. It was discovered that a 19 year old male was stabbed and subsequently taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center by Maryland State Police Aviation. Two additional 19 year old victims were also located and transported to local area hospitals for further care.
Per the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office: As the investigation continued, a suspect was identified as a 17 year old male from Olney, Maryland. He was located a short time later and taken to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. It was later determined that the actual assault had occurred in the 6000 block of Buffalo Road in Carroll County, not at the original location of the party. Investigators from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office then took over the investigation. After consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office, the suspect was transported to Carroll County Central Booking where he will initially be charged as an adult. We have received confirmation from a representative at &Pizza that the company will no longer opening an Olney location this year.
Back in September of 2021 we let you know that &Pizza would be coming to Olney’s Fair Hill Shopping Center. At that time, we didn’t have an exact location, noting that it would likely take over a spot that was home to an existing business. The pizza shop was then going to take over the storefront that was formerly home to Olney Winery, but that has fallen through as a representative has told us that &Pizza will not be opening Olney “this year.” The storefront is once again available for lease.
Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police- 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating a commercial burglary that occurred on Monday, December 26, 2022, at the Herbiculture in the 4000 block of Sandy Spring Road. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them. The investigation by detectives has revealed that two suspects smashed a door and entered the establishment. Once inside, the suspects forced entry into the safe and stole and undisclosed amount of merchandise before leaving the scene.

Fire will take place one day between mid-February and April 2023 to help with the park’s meadow restoration program.
Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be conducting a prescribed fire at Rachel Carson Conservation Park (located in (Brookeville) one day between mid-February to April 2023 to help restore the meadow located in the park. Prescribed fires are used to enhance and maintain native biological diversity as an alternative to mowing to remove the layer of dead plant material. This allows sunlight and rain to reach the soil surface to promote the regeneration of native wildflowers.
The Olney Boys & Girls Club was able to grant scholarships to over 530 kids, in 2022 to play house sports that totaled nearly $73,000. The scholarships ensured that players that would be unable to participate financially would have the opportunity to play their favorite sport and stay active and healthy.
“One of the most personally rewarding programs we run is our scholarship program, said Brad Scott, director of the Olney Boys & Girls Club. “We always ensure that no child is unable to participate in our programs due to financial constraints.”
