Rockville’s ‘Woodley Robotics’ Team To Be Honored by The City of Rockville

The City of Rockville will be providing Certificates of Recognition to the 2022 Woodley Robotics Team. The 2022 Woodley Robotics team was the one team selected to represent Maryland at the First Lego League Competition at the World Festival in Houston, Texas in April of 2022. The team has been competing in the First Lego League Challenge throughout the 2022 season. There were 108 teams (from 51 countries) competing from all over the world. The team had some issues with their robot; however, they kept going and correcting and trying new things. The team received a score of 520 on their last run, that ranked them at #21 overall in the robot games portion of the competition. The competition also included presentations to a panel of 4 judges on their Innovation Project, Robot Design and Core Values, as well as answering questions asked by the judges in the 40 minutes interview round.

26 trophies were awarded, and many great teams did not go home with one; however, the Woodley Robotics team received the “Breakthrough Award,” which is a special judges’ award based on how the team performed overall in all of the categories (Innovation Project, Robot Design, and Core Values). The Woodley Robotics team put in a lot of hard work, long hours and dedication to their Robotics project. The team consists of Head Coach Phil Johnson, Assistant Coach Karen Folkart, Team Members Charlotte Cornman, Jordyn Folkart, Brynn Johnson, Caroline Murphy, and Stella Newhouse.

Travilah Elementary School Briefly in Lockdown After Domestic Incident Between Two People Not Involved in School Community

Travilah Elementary School, located at 13801 Dufief Mill Rd. in North Potomac, was in a brief lockdown this afternoon following a domestic incident between two people that are not associated with the school community.

Rockville Police Department Offering ‘Fair and Impartial Policing’ Informational Training For Community

The Rockville City Police Department is offering a free Fair and Impartial Policing training for community members who would like to understand more about bias-free behavior in community policing. This event will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Social Hall at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. Light refreshments will be served.

This training will give community members the tools needed to better communicate with police officers so that community members and police can work together and make their community safer and more resilient. An FIP national instructor will lead a roundtable discussion session specifically designed for community members, covering the following topics:

Toosso Pakistani Kitchen Has Closed its Rockville Restaurant

Toosso Pakistani Kitchen has announced that it has closed its Rockville restaurant in Loehmann’s Plaza after 8 years. The restaurant was previously located at 1596 Rockville Pike near the old Pizza CS and Fuddrucker’s restaurants, but had to move due to the development of Twinbrook Quarter. It opened in its recent location at 5290 Randolph Rd in November 2020.

The restaurant left the following message on social media, inviting customers to its Sterling, Virginia location. “Restaurant closed. To our valued customers: Toosso Pakistani kitchen (Rockville) has closed its doors after 8 years. It has been a pleasure to serve the community. Thank you for your patronage and friendship that made us a success. We will miss you all. Please don’t forget to visit our Sterling location 20921 Davenport drive Sterling VA 20165.”

Spirit Halloween Coming to New Rockville Location

Spirit Halloween is coming to 2210 Veirs Mill Rd., the former CVS location in the Twinbrook Center in Rockville. This is a different location than the nearby Pike Center (where TGI Friday’s is on Rockville Pike) where Spirit Halloween has set up shop in recent years.

The store also recently announced its new Gaithersburg location at the former Pier 1 location (30 Grand Corner Ave) in Rio. Last year, Spirit had an additional Montgomery County location in Burtonsville. During the Halloween season, Spirit operates over 1,400 stores in North America. The Spirit Halloween website is open year-round, offering its in-store products online. The store usually open 30-60 days prior to Halloween.

Police and Family Concerned for Missing 14-Year-Old

The Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Elkin Herrera, a missing 14-year-old. Herrera was last seen on Wednesday August 30, 2023 at approximately 5:30 p.m., in the 600 block of Monroe St. in Rockville. He 5’7′ 120 Ibs, with black hair, brown eyes and was last seen wearing red t-shirt with the Nike logo, black sweatpants and grey sneakers.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Elkin Herrera is asked to call Montgomery County Police Non-Emergency (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line).

Our small team recently discussed a few upcoming events that some of our staff members/contributors/friends plan to attend in the coming weeks and while many were mentioned, we put together this list of the five events that came up the most:

GreekFest (9/8-9/10, Silver Spring): Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church will hold its annual Greek festival starting Friday, September 8th and running until Sunday, September 10th. The festival will take place over three days– on the grounds of Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, located at 701 Norwood Road in Silver Spring: Friday, 9/8: 4pm-9pm, Saturday, 9/9: 11am-9pm. Rocktobierfest Returns to Rockville Town Center Later This Month

Rocktobierfest returns to Rockville Town Center on Saturday, Sept. 30 for a day of bands, beers and being together. The fifth edition of the free festival, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., will include two stages of live music, food, beer sales by local breweries, and an artisan shopping area.

Bavarian and rock musical acts will take the stage, including Mike Surratt and the Continentals, Under the Covers, Capital Effect, Chesapeake Sons, Alt Washingtonia and Rockville German Band. Featured beverage vendors will include 7 Locks Brewing, Crooked Crab Brewing Company, Dawson’s Market, Denizens Brewing Co., Landmade Brewing, Lone Oak Farm Brewing Co., Saints Row Brewing, Silver Branch Brewing Company, Twin Valley Distillers, Waredaca Brewing Company and World of Beer.

18-Month-Old Child Hospitalized After Falling From Apartment Building Window in Rockville

Rockville City Police responded to the 400 block of Blandford Street for an 18-month old child who had fallen out of an open window on Monday, September 4. According to police, “the child is conscious and breathing and was transported to a local hospital. Our Investigators are en route as this remains an active investigation.” WUSA reports that the child was found on the sidewalk by a neighbor who then called 911. City of Rockville to Mark 9/11 Anniversary with Mayoral Remarks at Memorial Ceremony

Per the City of Rockville: The City of Rockville will mark the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and remember county residents who lost their lives with a ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at Courthouse Square Park, at the corner of East Jefferson Street and Maryland Avenue in Rockville’s downtown. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will include a presentation of colors and remarks by Rockville Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton.

The 9/11 memorial at Courthouse Square Park remembers the 11 Montgomery County residents who lost their lives on Sept. 11: William Edward Caswell, Dr. Gerald Paul Fisher, Capt. Lawrence D. Getzfred, Michele M. Heidenberger, Angela Marie Houtz, Teddington Hamm Moy, Lt. Darin H. Pontell, Scott A. Powell, Todd Hayes Reuben, Patricia J. Statz and Ernest M. Willcher.
