The initial investigation has revealed that the victim was exiting the I-270 ramp onto Shady Grove Road when he came across a silver Mitsubishi vehicle partially blocking the exit ramp. A suspect, who the victim believed to be a police officer, flagged him over, onto the side of the road. The victim then got out of his vehicle and began to walk towards the suspect, at which point the suspect demanded that he return to his vehicle. The suspect then approached the victim’s vehicle and demanded money. At that time, the suspect entered the victim’s vehicle and demanded that the victim drive to a Bank of America in the 15000 block of Shady Grove Road to withdraw money from the ATM. As the victim drove to the bank, the silver Mitsubishi began to follow, driven by a second suspect.   The victim advised that he observed a handgun in the suit jacket of the suspect on multiple occasions.

The Rockville City Police Department’s Neighborhood Services/Animal Control Division has been made aware of the several sightings of a large black bear in West Rockville, specifically the areas of Woodley Gardens and Great Falls Road today. We have been in contact with the Department of Natural Resources to alert them of these sightings. If you see a bear, please call RCPD non-emergency at 240-314-8900 as soon as possible.

If a bear happens to surprise you, stay calm. Do not surprise the bear if it is unaware of your presence. Here are a few helpful tips courtesy of the National Park Service to keep you, your family, and your pets safe! Identify yourself by talking calmly so the bear knows you are a human and not a prey animal. Remain still; stand your ground but slowly wave your arms. Help the bear recognize you as a human. It may come closer or stand on its hind legs to get a better look or smell. A standing bear is usually curious, not threatening.

Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is seeking public input about plans to convert two tennis courts to six dedicated pickleball courts at East Norbeck Local Park. The proposed project aims to expand pickleball opportunities in the county by creating a hub of multiple, dedicated courts for the increasingly popular sport. The public may submit their feedback on the plan at the online Open Town Hall through Friday, June 2, 2023. “Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and here in Montgomery County. While Montgomery Parks has a strong inventory of shared pickleball and tennis courts, we need to increase the number of dedicated pickleball courts to accommodate the demand,” said Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks.

Montgomery Parks currently has more than 75 shared pickleball/tennis courts and only eight dedicated pickleball courts. East Norbeck Local Park has been selected as a suitable location for a pickleball hub for multiple reasons including:

Earlier this month, MCPS announced that vape detectors were in the process of being installed in the bathrooms of a “limited number of high schools.” Student journalists Hannah Lee, Claire Yu, and Avery Wang, of Richard Montgomery’s RM Tide newspaper, have reported that installations begin this week at six MCPS High Schools: John F. Kennedy, Northwood , Paint Branch, Quince Orchard, Richard Montgomery, and Walt Whitman. The detectors will remain until at least the end of the school year.

Per MCPS: “Vape detectors are in the process of being installed in the bathrooms of a limited number of high school schools. These detectors will help to identify any instances of vaping or smoking in the bathrooms, allowing us to take appropriate action to prevent harm to our students’ health and safety.”
