Update: Train service has been restored between Twinbrook & Shady Grove following earlier fire dept. activity outside Rockville. Expect delays.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) units are currently at the at Rockville Metro (1001 Rockville Pike) for a small fire in the roadway, according to Assistant Chief with MCFRS David Pazos. The station is currently being bypassed while MCFRS extinguishes the fire. There are no injuries reported.


If she were mayor, Joyce Tian would uplift, honor and celebrate Rockville through the city’s special events and farmers market. Joyce, a fourth grader in Laurel Czajkowski’s class at Beall Elementary School in Rockville, will get to see what it’s like to be mayor when she serves as the city’s honorary “Mayor for a Day” on Thursday, May 25.

She earned the honor for writing a winning essay in the “If I Were Mayor, I Would …” essay contest sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Mayors Association. Joyce’s essay, one of 11 winning essays selected statewide to represent each MML district, was selected best of District 5, which comprises Montgomery and Howard counties.


According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Margaret Schweitzer, a jury has convicted defendant, Jaime Havier Lee, 43, of an unconfirmed address, on the charge of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of 36-year-old Cornelius Lyon of an unconfirmed address. The jury returned its verdict late yesterday evening. Lee faces up to 40 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 28th, 2023, at 1 p.m. in front of Judge Schweitzer.

This trial, prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Donna Fenton and Jodie Mount stemmed from an incident on May 2nd, 2020. That afternoon, officers with Montgomery County Police and Rockville City Police responded to the 100 block of Frederick Avenue in Rockville where the victim, Lyon, was lying on the ground, deceased. According to witnesses, Lyon had walked to the area in an attempt to seek help. He had been stabbed by Jaime Lee inside of a nearby apartment in the 700 block of Lenmore Avenue. Witnesses say a group of men were inside the apartment when a fight broke out over $20 dollars. The defendant and victim became involved in a verbal argument which escalated, and Lee stabbed Lyon in the face, chest, left arm and neck. Multiple people then fled the apartment including both the victim and the defendant. Rockville City officers located Lee in the area a short time later.”


According to the Frederick Police Department (FPD), there have been several sightings of a small black bear in the city of Frederick. FDP posted the following message on Facebook:

“🚨🐻Please be advised: We have received several reports regarding sightings of a small bear in our area. Please be aware that FPD is fully aware of the bear sightings, and we are actively monitoring the situation. To ensure everyone’s safety, we kindly request that you do not approach the bear if you happen to encounter it. Bears are wild animals and unpredictable, especially when they feel threatened or cornered. Please stay tuned for any updates or instructions from FPD regarding this matter. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we navigate this situation.”


While many remember Elden Henson’s roles as one of the “Bash Brothers” Fulton Reed in the Mighty Ducks movies and Foggy Nelson in Netflix Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series Daredevil, you may not know that he was born right here in MoCo. Then known as Elden Ryan Ratliff, he was born August 30, 1977 in Rockville. His mom, Sayde Henson, was a teacher, and his dad, George Ratliff, was a former New York theater actor. He didn’t stay too long, as his family moved to California by 1980.

Henson started acting as a print model when he was just a toddler, and began acting in commercials when he was six. He had many guest roles on television and acted in films like 1988’s Elvis & Me (written by Priscilla Presley) and 1989’s Turner & Hooch starring Tom Hanks. As a teenager, he starred as Fulton Reed in the Mighty Ducks trilogy (1992-1996). Since then, he has had supporting roles in films like The Mighty, She’s All That, Idle Hands, O, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met LloydThe Butterfly Effect, and a lot more.

The third annual Montgomery County Children’s Business Fair will return in August after a three-year hiatus. Applications are now being accepted for the fair, set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19. The fair, which will be held in Rockville Town Square, is open to youth aged 6-15.

On Thursday afternoon Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a “vehicle into a building” For reasons unknown, a driver and their car ended up approximately 30 feet into Sniffers Doggie Retreat at 7300 Westmore Rd (opposite side of Montgomery College on 355) in Rockville around 4:30pm.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, there were no injuries, but two dogs ended up getting loose following the crash. One was found soon after the crash, but another dog remained missing until Saturday morning when Sniffers reported that the dog walked up to the facility’s front door. There were no injuries during the crash, and the doggie retreat is now focusing on rebuilding. The full message from Sniffers Doggie Retreat below:


Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is offering a special program on the History of Play at the Josiah Henson Museum and Park on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 12 – 4 p.m. The program is free with paid admission to the museum.

The event will explore how children always find ways to play and how games are formative in all children’s lives, even children who live in extremely difficult and dire circumstances. Stations with different games that have historic associations with Native American and enslaved children and children of the Holocaust will be on the museum grounds for children to play. Volunteers will help children learn the games and information will be provided on the role of the game in the group’s history.


Adventist HealthCare has moved forward with plans to modernize its 45-year-old Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville with a new, $180-million patient tower that is expected to open in 2025, according to a BizJournals report.

Per Adventist HealthCare: Crews will begin constructing the hospital’s new 150,352-square-foot, six-story tower in front of Shady Grove Medical Center’s existing Emergency department entrance. During construction, patients seeking emergency care at Shady Grove will use a dedicated doorway at the hospital’s main entrance. Patients will undergo an initial evaluation in a triage room off the main lobby. Then, caregivers will escort patients to the Emergency department or another area of the hospital for care.


The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning Plus (LGBTQ+) Pride Month is celebrated in the United States to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. The commemorative month also recognizes the impact LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history—locally, nationally, and internationally. The City of Rockville has issued proclamations declaring LGBTQ+ Pride Month since June 2017.
