The Frederick News Post has reported that Christopher Bryan Brooks, 27, of Rockville, was killed in a head-on crash that occurred on Fingerboard Rd, between Park Mills Road and Roderick Road, shortly before 11pm on Friday night.

According to our public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, MD-80 Fingerboard Road was closed for several hours for crash reconstruction and investigation. Per the Frederick News Post article, “Maryland State Police said Christopher Bryan Brooks, 27, of Rockville, was driving east, but crossing over a double-yellow line, into the westbound lane, and passing vehicles. The man’s black Dodge Charger hit a white Toyota Camry head-on. The Camry, driven by 60-year-old Craig Allan McHenry of Adamstown, was heading west.” Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.


Golfdom “The Golfer’s Store” has leased the space that was formerly home to Pier 1 Imports at 12137 Rockville Pike in the Pike Center– the shopping center that’s home to TGI Friday’s, according to a Biz Journals Report. The space has been home to Spirit Halloween in the years since Pier 1 Imports closed.

Golfdom has been around for over 40 years, moving into its Tyson’s location, at 8302 Watson St in McLean, VA, in 1997. In 2022, Golfdom agreed to be acquired by Worldwide Golf Shops, a Bethesda-based parent company of several well-known golf retailers throughout the country. A projected opening date is not yet available, but we will provide an update as soon as it is.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a report of a house fire at approximately 8:40pm  on the 700 block of Fletcher Ave in Rockville on Friday night, according to Assistant Fire Chief Dave Pazos.

Upon arrival, units began extinguishing a car fire in the car port with extension into the the first and second floor of the single family home. Additional units were dispatched to the scene as crews searched the home. Just after 9pm, Assistant Chief Pazos stated that MCFRS units confirmed all occupants of the home were out safely and uninjured. At that time, units continued to extinguish any of the remaining fire.


Grandma’s Ice Cream and Waffles at 389 E. Gude Dr in Rockville, next to the former Branded 72/O’Brien’s restaurant space, has announced it will be opening this Monday, January 23. Grandma’s is being opened by the same owners as the “Grandma Kona’s” Kona Ice franchise in Gaithersburg/Germantown. Additional information, as well as a $1 coupon, below:

In November we let you know that longtime MoCo restaurant Amalfi Ristorante Italiano at 12307 Wilkins Ave in Rockville was bought by the owners of Chef Tony’s Restaurant in Bethesda. The restaurant, now known as Chef Tony’s at Amalfi, has “quietly” reopened, according to a social media post by the restaurant.

On Thursday, the restaurant posted the following: “OK EVERYONE…we’re open, quietly, but open.” We are told the menu features a rotation of “Amalfi Classics”, many starters, tapas, salads, and pastas, and a variety of seafood entrees. The promenade location at Pooks Hill in Bethesda is now ‘Chef Tony’s Italian Kitchen’ and most of their seafood menu has moved over to Chef Tony’s at Amalfi. The restaurant is currently only open for dinner service. Additional information can be found via the Facebook page.


Regal Cinemas has announced plans to close 39  U.S. theaters, including its location at 199 E Montgomery Ave in Rockville, according to a report today by Business Insider. The Regal Rockville opened on November 6, 1998. Insider reports that Cineworld, the parent company of Regal that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2021, plans to “reject the leases” of the 39 locations starting February 15.  The company expects the move to save them close to $22 million a year and “the debtors are hopeful that these negotiations will lead to lease concessions and modifications that will obviate the need for rejection and enable additional theater sites to remain open.”


In November we let you know that RASA, a fast-casual Indian restaurant with four locations in DC and Virginia, would be taking over the recently-closed Slapfish location at 12033 Rockville Pike in the Montrose Crossing shopping center. Since then, permanent signage has been installed and the restaurant announced Wednesday evening on Instagram that it will be opening this Spring (an exact date was not provided, post available below).

The restaurant, founded by Rahul Vinod and Sahil Rahman (combined to create the name, RASA), opened its first location in Navy Yard in 2017 before opening a location in Mt. Vernon Triangle in 2020, Crystal City in 2021, and Fairfax this past summer. The menu offers seven chef-curated bowls under the “We Got You” portion of the menu, that includes their signature bowls like the “Tikka Chance on Me”, “Open Sesame”, “Eat Your Veggies”, “Home Cooking”, “Goa Your Own Way”, “Aloo Need is Love”, and “Caul on Me” or the “You Got It” portion of their menu that allows customers to “DIY” and design their own bowl using the assembly line format of a base, main, sauce, veggies, toppings, and chutneys/dressings. Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) will re-open its Montrose store under its upgraded retail concept, “Oak Barrel & Vine,” at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27. The celebration and ribbon cutting will occur in front of the store, located at 1205-B Rockville Pike in the Montrose Crossing shopping center in Rockville. County Executive Marc Elrich, other elected officials and alcohol industry representatives plan to attend the opening.

The Oak Barrel & Vine branded stores feature handpicked items with a focus on spirits and local products. The upgraded store will have 25 percent more shelf space, a dedicated tasting area, queue lines for faster checkout and wayfinding signs for a more inviting shopping experience.


Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, in the area of West Gude Drive and Watkins Pond Blvd. in Rockville.

At approximately 2:29 p.m., Montgomery County Police Officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a single vehicle collision. The investigation by detectives has revealed that the driver of a silver 2018 Infiniti Q50 was traveling eastbound on West Gude Drive when he lost control and collided with a tree in the center median.


Winter Restaurant Week runs from January 16 to January 22, with ten Montgomery County restaurants participating. Founding Farmers, J. Hollinger’s, Lia’s, all three Matchbox locations, Morton’s, Spanish Diner, The Daily Dish, and Dish & Dram will be the participating MoCo restaurants. Per the Metropolitan Restaurant Week website:

Due to issues with the solid waste incinerator at the Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility in Dickerson, the City of Rockville will not be collecting bulk waste at this time. Household recycling and trash collections remain on their regular schedule.

Scheduled bulk refuse collections are suspended until the county-owned facility resumes operations. Visit www.montgomerycountymd.gov/sws for updates about the status of the county facility. Bulk waste collections are for large waste that does not fit into carts, such as a couch, desk, sink, door, or cabinet up to 499 pounds. Scheduled bulk metal and bulk yard waste collections will be made as scheduled.
