After setting an opening date of Friday, November 18th last week, La Catrina Bar & Lounge , located at 4935 Cordell Avenue in Bethesda, recently posted on its social media that “for reasons beyond our control, we’ve had to postpone our opening date. We’ll be announcing a new date soon.”

At least 3,500 Washington area seniors will be treated to Thanksgiving dinner this year courtesy of Feed the Fridge, with major assists from The Washington Home, Medium Rare, DoorDash and the PM Hotel Group’s BWI Hilton. Again this year, Feed the Fridge – which has delivered more than 700,000 free, nutritious meals to DC metro area residents who need them since the beginning of the COVID pandemic – will be delivering traditional holiday meals to seniors during the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

Until now, those home deliveries were made entirely by volunteers. Now DoorDash drivers will be joining them – thanks to a $100,000 in-kind donation from DoorDash’s Philanthropy Division. Feed the Fridge founder Mark Bucher says the donation will not only help with holiday meals, but will allow him to expand his organization’s network of fridges at schools and community centers in the region’s “food deserts.” Those fridges are each stocked with up to 100 free, nutritious meals every day, year round, to be taken by those who need them – no questions asked.

With a strong selection of Filipino cuisine in the DC area, Eater put together a list that includes some places to “find fantastic Filipino food around DC.” While there are additional restaurants that serve Filipino cuisine in Montgomery County, three were included in the list by Eater– Gwenie’s Pastries, Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly, and the worldwide fast-food chain Jollibee.

Gwenie’s Pastries (12113 Nebel St., Rockville): “Overseen by Stella Fernandez, whose brother Javier runs Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly, this storefront supplies other local Filipino restaurants and markets with sweets developed by their mother, Gwendolyn. Try the ube cupcakes, with a vibrant color coming from the purple yam that’s a staple of Filipino desserts.

The Avenue at White Marsh, a popular destination for many in Baltimore County, has announced that Silver Diner will be opening its first Baltimore County location at the shopping center. Silver Diner will be taking over the corner space adjacent to Barnes & Noble. Barnes & Noble, one of the original tenants at the shopping center,  has been temporarily closed for renovations since August with plans to reopen in early 2023.

In addition to being Baltimore County’s first Silver Diner location, the 8,125 SF restaurant will also be the 23rd overall restaurant for the company that recently opened its first DC location and has over 20 additional restaurants across Maryland and Virginia (with one in Cherry Hill, NJ).

Eat This, Not That has created “a round-up of positively reviewed Thai-focused restaurants in every state that you’ll want to visit at least once.” Montgomery County restaurant Charm Thai (8408 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring) earned the nod for the state of Maryland.

Per the list, “One Yelp reviewer calls Charm Thai the best Thai in Silver Spring. Now if that doesn’t speak volumes, the menu is loaded with authentic Thai cuisine from the crispy rice salad and crispy duck rolls to noodle lover soup and crab meat fried rice. Finish off the meal with a Thai-style fried banana for dessert. Open seven days a week.

Silver Spring’s Beteseb (8201 Georgia Avenue) was named an “Essential Ethiopian Restaurant Around DC” according to a new list by food and restaurant website, Eater. Though there are dozens of Ethiopian restaurants in the county, many of which are very popular locally, Beteseb was the only MoCo restaurant included on the list

Silver Spring has no shortage of good Ethiopian food, but Beteseb distinguishes itself with food bursting with flavor and spice. The injera is made entirely from teff grain, unlike many American-adapted injera that incorporate wheat flour. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday to Sunday. Try the breakfast firfir combo (scrambled eggs, seasoned cracked wheat, spiced bread) or buttery bula porridge.”

Scratch Kitchen opened it’s doors in Olney just a couple months back and the restaurant is already giving back to the community, generously providing a “true Thanksgiving meal”  for 130 new multilingual learners at Gaithersburg High School next week.

On Tuesday, November 22nd, Gaithersburg High School will host it’s annual Thanksgiving Lunch to the school’s newcomer multilingual learners. Per a community message sent out by Gaithersburg High School, “Every year, we invite our newcomer students to experience the true Thanksgiving meal during lunch on the day before our Thanksgiving break. This luncheon typically includes all of the newcomer students, our administrative team, our counseling team, and our English Language Development teachers. The goal is always to help our students feel comfortable breaking bread with school staff, and to help them experience an American tradition. It is typically the first time our students have tasted turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce or pumpkin pie.”

Turkeys famously can’t fly, but they sure can fry. This Thanksgiving, the public is once again invited to fly, drive, metro or just walk on over to Medium Rare restaurant in Cleveland Park for the 15th Annual Free Turkey Fry. The event has become a much-anticipated  DC Thanksgiving Day tradition. This year, Medium Rare co-owner Mark Bucher estimates they’ll fry up to 600 turkeys. It’s for anyone who brings a thawed, eight- to 12-pound bird with them. A dozen fryers filled with almost 500 gallons of oil will be red hot and ready to fry up 96 birds an hour.

Bucher, who has been at the forefront of ending hunger in the DMV, started the event in 2008  for those who wanted to avoid the hassles and potential danger of turkey frying.  Many who take advantage of the annual event are recipients of free turkeys but lack the skill, confidence or tools to cook them. In recent years, it’s also become a fundraiser for Feed the Fridge, the non-profit Bucher started to provide free, nutritious, restaurant-prepared meals to those who need them. Since its launch at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, Feed the Fridge has provided more than 700,000 meals and has paid local restaurants $3.5 million in donated funds to prepare them. Medium Rare will fry your turkey for free, but asks those can to make a small donation to Feed the Fridge.
