Kusshi Sushi to Open Rockville Town Square Location

Kusshi Sushi has officially signed on to take over the space that was home to popular sushi restaurant Sushi Damo at 36G Maryland Ave in Rockville Town Square for over 15 years. Sushi Damo, one of the first tenants of Rockville Town Square, closed permanently on October 1st.

Kusshi Sushi, which has additional MoCo locations in Pike & Rose and Downtown Silver Spring (along with an Arlington Pentagon Row and Tysons Pike 7 Plaza in Northern VA), will be renovating the restaurant and has already submitted drawings to the landlord for approval. They hope to begin construction in early 2024 and open in the spring of 2024. Kusshi is working on keeping the Sushi Damo sushi chef at the restaurant and has also made offers for Sushi Damo servers to join the new restaurant once it opens.

Last Call: Old Town Pour House Closes Today After 8.5 Years in Gaithersburg

Last Friday we let you know that Old Town Pour House, located at 212 Ellington Drive in Gaithersburg’s Downtown Crown development, will be closing permanently on Tuesday, October 24th. We have been told by several readers that the restaurant had extended waits over the weekend and was busier than usual on Monday. Today will be the last day to have a meal or drink at the Downtown Crown original tenant restaurant/bar.

Old Town Pour House released the following statement after our report, “After10 incredible years in Gaithersburg, our lease is up and we’ve decided to turn off the taps at Old Town Pour House at 212 Ellington Boulevard. This last decade was filled with so many delightful guests and meaningful engagement with an outstanding community, and we consider it a major success for the Bottleneck Management group. We whole-heartedly thank everyone we’ve met along the way for making us a part of their lives. Our last day of service will be Tuesday, October 24th.

Pieology Pizzeria Has Closed

Pieology Pizzeria at 15780 Shady Grove Rd in Gaithersburg has closed. Pieology was located in the 270 Center, which is also home to anchors Home Depot and Best Buy. The restaurant offered individual, fast-casual style pizzas where customers would order toppings in an “assembly-line” similar to Chipotle. Pieology was listed as “becoming available” on the shopping center’s leading website, but management could not confirm any closure as recently as earlier this month. Now, the windows are papered and the store is no longer listed on the Pieology website (Photo below courtesy of @imbr1anna on Instagram). A previous Montgomery County location in Bethesda closed about four years ago.

Per Pieology: “The freshest pizza starts with fresh ingredients, including our house-made dough and red sauce, made daily for you. You shouldn’t be stuck with set pizza recipes. Last Call: Denizens Brewing Co. in Silver Spring Closes Today

Last month, Denizens announced that its Silver Spring taproom would close permanently on Sunday, October 22nd. The announcement was made via a video shared on social media by Denizens co-founder and owner Julie Verrati. The brewery opened at 1115 East-West Highway in Silver Spring back in 2014. Denizens’ Riverdale Park, MD location will remain open.

“Our ten year lease has come to an end and that’s the end of an era for us, an end of a chapter. It’s been an incredible ten years in Silver Spring and we’re so grateful for the community here. We’re still making the same high quality beer, high quality service, high quality food that you can grab right here in Riverdale Park, Maryland.” Verratti said in the video, which can be seen below.

Koma Cafe Currently Holding Soft Opening

Koma, a new café and cocktail bar from Brad Feickert, chef and owner of SOKO Butcher, is now open at 8006 Flower Ave in Takoma Park. The restaurant is currently holding its soft opening and will be open from 7am-2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Koma is a “specialty coffee shop with an Italian influence that serves coffee, pastries, and breakfast by day and lunch, dinner, wine, beer, and cocktails by afternoon and night.” The restaurant is currently serving sandwiches and will be expanding its menu to include pizza and pasta in the coming weeks.

The restaurant posted the following on its Instagram page on Friday, October 20: “We were very sneaky and did a quiet soft open today, a lot of you found out quick and we appreciate you checking us out! We will be doing another soft opening this weekend from 7am-2pm Saturday and Sunday! Come by and try our Croissant Egg and Cheese and a cold brew!”

Old Town Pour House to Close Permanently on October 24th

Old Town Pour House, located at 212 Ellington Drive in Gaithersburg’s Downtown Crown development, will be closing permanently on Tuesday, October 24th. A manager from the restaurant confirmed the closing to us on Friday night, following the restaurant’s filing of a WARN on Friday for a mass layoff of 58 employees.

Update on Tacos Way

Tacos Way is coming soon to 8777B 1st Ave in Silver Spring. The Montgomery County ABS announced that the restaurant recently received its alcohol license and Source of the Spring reports that exterior signage has recently been installed. Menu items include tacos, burritos, bowls, quesadillas, salads, and chimichangas.

According to its website, “All of our taco flavors are inspired by delicious Mexican flavors.” Tacos Way has an additional location at 10540 York Rd in Cockeysville, MD. We will provide an update when additional information becomes available. Featured image courtesy of Tacos Way on Facebook.

“Tacos Y Tikka” Chef Collaboration Takes Place in Bethesda Starting October 26th

Two chefs with restaurants less than a mile away in Bethesda will be teaming up to create a Mexican/Indian fusion menu. Tacombi‘s chef Carmen Miranda is partnering with award winning and beloved DMV chef Ashish Alfred, as they each bring their own heritage to the table for a first-of-its-kind Mexico-meets-India collaboration. The mouthwatering Mexican and Indian fusion will be exclusively available at the Bethesda Tacombi taqueria (4749 Bethesda Ave) for a limited-time-only from October 26 through Thanksgiving.

In what Chef Alfred calls a “synergy of two different flavor profiles in two different cultures,” the brand new Chicken Tikka Masala Taco features garam masala, ginger, and butter chicken sauce, wrapped in a Vista Hermosa corn tortilla, finished with cotija cheese. This cross-cultural creation is another innovation from Tacombi, the Mexican taqueria known for its full-flavor tacos, cocktails and ice-cold beers, which operates 20 popular taquerias across the DMV, NYC and Miami metro areas. Drawing on rich culinary traditions from distinct regions of Mexico, Tacombi’s menu offers a variety of authentic full-flavor tacos alongside traditional Mexican bites complemented by ice-cold beers and cocktails.

NYC’s Chip City Sets Opening Date for First DMV Location

Last November, we let you know that New York‘s Chip Citywill be opening its first Maryland location at the Shoppes of Bethesda, replacing Fancy Cakes By Leslie at 4939 Elm St. Fancy Cakes by Leslie closed in October 2022. A commercial permit was issued at the beginning of the summer for a $210,000 buildout at the location and now the opening date has been announced– Friday, November 3rd.

Five years ago, cookies were a side hustle for Theodore Gailas and Peter Phillips. Since then, they’ve opened over a dozen Chip City cookie shops in and around New York with plans to expand outside of the area. Chip City is expected to rapidly expand, with over 20 stores expected to open in 2023. According to Forbes, The rollout plan will be supported by the founder of fast casual restaurant Shake Shack, Danny Meyer, who recently invested $10 million in the cookies.
