dd’s Discount is coming to 18236 Contour Rd in the Montgomery Village Plaza shopping center, according to mfi Realty. The store will be located in the former space of Marshall’s, which relocated to Gaithersburg Square last year.  dd’s is owned and operated by Ross Stores, Inc and items for sale at its locations are similar to those found in other discount retailers. This will be the first dd’s location in Montgomery County. No opening date has been announced.

Target has announced an exclusive multiyear agreement with iconic toy brand FAO Schwarz to ignite even more magic and inspiration across Target’s unrivaled toy assortment. Starting mid-October, FAO Schwarz toys will be available exclusively at Target stores, Target.com and FAO Schwarz stores. In addition, Target announced the 10th annual Bullseye’s Top Toys list, presented by FAO Schwarz, which includes the most anticipated toys and games from a wide variety of brands available at Target.  Per the press release: With a curated assortment of toys at a variety of affordable prices, more exclusive items and only-at-Target experiences with FAO Schwarz and Disney store at Target, Target will provide guests a one-stop shop for all of their toy-buying needs this holiday season and beyond at all Montgomery County Locations.

Farrow & Ball, the U.K. based paint and wallpaper brand, is opening a new location at Federal Realty’s Bethesda Row in December 2022. The showroom will be located at 7118 Bethesda Lane next to Simon Pearce and The Shade Store and will offer color consultations, decorating inspiration and advice. The space was originally planned to be the home of Little Sesame before the restaurant made the decision to concentrate on its hummus production and distribution earlier this summer

Bun’d Up has closed its location in The Block at Pike & Rose after a little over a year and a half. Bun’d Up opened it’s Pike & Rose location in January of 2021and is known for putting a “modern, Korean twist on the original Taiwanese “gua bao” with handmade buns, local produce, and sustainably raised meat from Springfield Farm.” The location closed a earlier in September, according to a representative from The Block. We were told a replacement hasn’t been named yet, but one is likely to take over in the coming weeks.

Bun’d Up is still available in the DMV at Pentagon Row in Arlington and Union Station in DC. You can also still get your buns in MoCo on Saturdays between 9am and 1:30pm at the Pike Central Farm Market in Pike & Rose and at the Bethesda Central Farm Market on Sundays between 9am and 1:30pm at 7600 Arlington Rd.


Charleys Cheesesteaks will be opening a location inside of the Germantown Walmart (20910 Frederick Rd), in the space formerly occupied by McDonald’s. The company has created a Facebook page for the new store and representatives from Charleys tell us they expect to open in early November. The upcoming Charleys located at 405 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg, in the location that was recently home to Teriyaki Express, is scheduled to open sometime this month. We were told by employees of the Lakeforest location that the Lakeforest location will close when the new Gaithersburg restaurant opens, but a specific date has not yet been provided.

In August we reported that Charleys would also be coming to 19877 Century Blvd in Germantown, taking over the location that was previously home to Roll by Goodyear and Yogi Castle in the Shops at Town Center & Century Station shopping center, according to the shopping center’s leasing company.

The 2022 Taiwan Bubble Tea Festival will take place on September 24th from 11am until 4pm at Rockville Town Square. The event is being held by Taiwan Sister Cities, an organization “dedicated to promoting, educating, and fostering intercultural understanding and cooperation among the people of the United States and the people of Taiwan.”

Participating in the festival will be Tiger Sugar Rockville, which recently reopened after a car crashed through their storefront. Bun’d Up, which has a Pike & Rose location nearby. Mr. Wish, which opened last year in Rockville. Bao Bei, which started operating out of a kitchen in Rockville recently. Doki Toki, which recently opened in Downtown Crown, and a lot more.


Back in December we let you know that DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) would be closing its location at 910 Ellsworth Dr on January 22 and opening a new location in Ellsworth Place at 8661 Colesville Rd. taking over the space formerly occupied by Guitar Center. Originally expected to open on March 24th, delays didn’t make that possible. Ellsworth Place has recently announced via Instagram that DSW will be opening on August 25th, as first reported by Source of the Spring. The Silver Spring Guitar Center closed back in January of this year, while the Rockville Guitar Center at 12401 Twinbrook Pkwy remains open.

Paris Baguette, “the neighborhood bakery café where communities come together over expertly crafted baked and brewed goods”, announced that the brand is on track to open a projected 40 new locations by the end of 2022, reaching nearly 150 locations across the United States and reinforcing its status as one of the fastest growing franchises in the country. One of those location will be in Rockville Town Square with another location (currently unknown) coming to the area soon, according to a report by Bethesda Magazine. The Rockville Town Square location will be located at 101 Gibbs Street and will offer Korean and French baked goods. Doors may open by the end of 2022.

In addition to the upcoming Montgomery County locations, the growth of the bakery/cafe will accelerate in 2023 with 96 slated bakery café openings and increased interest from franchise partners. Chain Store Ageone of the nation’s leading provider of retail news and analysis for retail headquarters executives across all sectors of the industry, has recently released part of its list of 2022’s ‘Top 10 Retail Experiences’ and MoCo’s very own Rio Lakefront came in at #10. CSA reports on and analyzes trends and strategies in all areas of store operations and store development, including technology, marketing, human resources, finance, store design & construction, facilities management and real estate. They are releasing the top 10 one at a time with only numbers 10 and 9 currently available, so it’s unknown if any other MoCo retail centers will be included on the list.
