A Nike Unite store is coming to Downtown Silver Spring, taking over the location that was formerly home to DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse location at 910 Ellsworth Drive, according to a report by Source of the Spring. We spoke with an employee Nike Unite store in Fairfax, VA, which opened on May 26th, who told us that the Silver Spring location is expected to open later this year, but did not have a specific date.

An employee at the Nike Unite store told us that the pricing and products offered at a Unite store are similar to that of a Nike Factory store (often found at outlets), with a slightly different layout and a specific return section for items purchased on Nike.com. Nike describes the Nike Unite concept as:

The grand opening for Roaming Rooster at 11586 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda takes place on Tuesday, June 21 at 11am. As part of the grand opening festivities, the first 50 customers will receive a free sandwich of their choice. The Pike & Rose location will be Roaming Rooster’s first restaurant in Maryland and Montgomery County, and 9th overall. The company has also announced plans to open a Gaithersburg location later this year. We’re told an official announcement on the exact location will be made once the previous tenant has completely vacated.

In addition to its famous buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches, the 1,843 square-foot restaurant will also serve homemade frozen custard scoops and hand-spun milkshakes and says it anticipates employing up to 30 people there.

20 acres of Gaithersburg’s Crown Farm was sold to JBG Rosenfeld Retail and the Bozzuto Group for $28 million nearly 10 years ago, in July of 2012. According to documents from what was then Crown Farm Community, this purchase included approximately 11 percent of Crown Farm’s 180 acres, for the development of Downtown Crown, “a mixed-use project slated to include a Harris Teeter-anchored retail center and nearly 540 apartments.” JBG Rosenfeld Retail purchased the property to build 260,000 square feet of retail. The Bozzuto Group purchased the multifamily development rights to build 538 apartments above the retail.

Located in Gaithersburg,  just west of Interstate-270 and the Intercounty Connector, Downtown Crown is considered the “retail heart” of Crown—a 182-acre master-planned community that was to consist of “more than 2,200 new homes and apartments, acres of parks, trails and a future transit stop for the Corridor City Transitway.” The community plan also incorporated a high school and a Corridor Cities Transit station for a light rail or bus line that would connect Gaithersburg with Clarksburg. Construction began later that summer for the plans that included the previously mentioned Harris Teeter, an LA Fitness, and a Starbucks. In October, the following restaurants were announced for Downtown Crown (not all ended up opening):

LensCrafters at 26 Grand Corner Ave in Gaithersburg is now open. This is the second new LensCrafters to open in MoCo in the past month, the other being in Pike & Rose at 901 Rose Ave in North Bethesda. The LensCrafters location inside of Lakeforest Mall is now closed.

LensCrafters offers eye exams and sells prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. “Customers can expect to find innovative technology, the newest styles, and unparalleled personalized service. They offer a wide range of prescription lenses for eyeglasses and sunglasses, perfectly tailored to your lifestyle.”
