The upcoming HalfSmoke location in Montgomery Mall is scheduled to open in “about four weeks”, according to a representative from the restaurant. HalfSmoke will be located in a kiosk in the food terrace that was the former home of Coldstone Creamery and more recently Gelato Galaxy. This will be the first restaurant/bar in the food court to serve alcohol. The menu will consist of the best selling sausages and sides from their DC location, as well as boozy milkshakes and a funnel cake bar. HalfSmokes sister restaurant Butter Me Up opened its Montgomery Mall location last week. Butter Me Up is located in the old Aroma Espresso Bar location, which is downstairs near the Old Navy entrance and features “instagrammable” decor, will offer a menu that consists of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, toasts, sides, bowls, smoothies, and juices.

HalfSmoke was the first restaurant of its kind to serve gourmet sausages via an assembly line format. Its sausages and toppings can be fully customized to create over 50,000 variations. The HalfSmoke menu also features craft beer, mac and cheese balls, tater tots, milkshakes, funnel cakes, wine, cocktails, and more.  HalfSmoke is also planning to open a Rockville Town Square location sometime this year.

Back in December we let you know that DC’s Butter Me Up will be opening a Montgomery County location in Westfield’s Montgomery Mall. The wait is over, as the location opened yesterday according to mall security. Butter Me Up has taken over the old Aroma Espresso Bar location, which is downstairs near the Old Navy entrance.

The breakfast spot, which features “instagrammable” decor, will offer a menu that consists of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, toasts, sides, bowls, smoothies, and juices. A Yelp article named Butter Me Up DC’s best breakfast sandwich, as the restaurant’s first location can be found within HalfSmoke in Florida Ave NW.

Big Al’s Subs and Soups in the Montgomery Mall food court has closed. It was located in the space that was previously home to Wicked Waffles, next to Charley’s. The restaurant, which had a menu very similar to that of Subway, opened in December of 2021.  The restaurant offered ten different signature sandwiches, including a vegetarian option called “The Mediterranean”, and a rotating list of soups.

In other Montgomery Mall restaurant news,  HalfSmoke Bethesda will be opening in the Montgomery Mall food court, as first reported by The MoCo Source on Instagram. It will be located in the former home of Coldstone Creamery and more recently Gelato Galaxy.  HalfSmoke was the first restaurant of its kind to serve gourmet sausages via an assembly line format. Its sausages and toppings can be fully customized to create over 50,000 variations. The HalfSmoke menu also features craft beer, mac and cheese balls, tater tots, milkshakes, funnel cakes, wine, cocktails, and more, but there is no word on if the Montgomery Mall location will offer everything the DC restaurant does. No word yet on an opening date.

Beginning the first week of June, Ridgefield Road will be closed between River Road (MD-190) and Westbard Avenue. An updated announcement states that Ridgefield Road will remain closed for approximately 16 months, meaning Ridgefield likely won’t reopen until at least October 2023.

Two separate posted detours will direct some traffic to Goldsboro Road, and others to Little Falls Parkway. Ride On Route 23 (Friendship Heights-Sibley Memorial Hospital) will also be detoured during the closure. One of the two sidewalks along Ridgefield is slated to remain open during the closure.

Alex Baby and Toys, a new concept from FYE, is now open in Montgomery Mall. The store is located downstairs next to Old Navy.  According to Westfield Montgomery, “from legos and baby essentials to LOL’s and STEM, they are your one-stop-shop for all things play.” We’re told the store offers toys for all ages, not just toddlers and young children.

According to Billboard, FYE was purchased by Sunrise Records in 2020. Sunrise paid $10 million to take over ownership of the 200-store chain. The purchase included assuming some of the chain’s liabilities including, accounts payable, store leases, and the chain’s frequent buyer membership program while also gaining a target inventory of $40 million. It also took on all FYE employees. FYE closed its Wheaton Mall location in January 2019 and its Lakeforest Mall location one year later in January of 2020. There is another Alex Baby and Toys listed as being in Holyoke Mall at Ingleside in Massachusetts, but the phone number is not currently active, so it may also be opening soon.

The MCPS Elementary School 2022 All-County Art Show began at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, April 26 and will be available for anyone to walk through/view until 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 1. The display, which was entirely virtual last year, has returned to the mall, and can be seen spread across the lower level of the mall.

This exhibition highlights outstanding artwork created in 135 schools by students in Pre-K through Grade 5. We hope you share our pride in these students’ accomplishments! They demonstrated a high level of critical thinking, a sensitivity to design elements, and an ability to persevere that enabled them to create these incredible works of art.

Under Armor in Montgomery Mall (7101 Democracy Blvd, Bethesda) will be closing for several months beginning on April 26 for remodeling.

During this time, Under Armor will have a temporary location in the mall at the former site of Sports Nation, which closed back in February. The temporary store is expected to be open a few days after the main location closes and will feature a majority of their inventory, except for kids clothing.

There will be an Easter charity event benefiting the Montgomery County Humane Society this Saturday, April 16th, from 12-3pm at Wheaton Mall (11160 Veirs Mill Rd).

There will be a photo op with the Easter bunny and Encanto characters for $10, with all proceeds donated to the Humane Society.

Michael Kors has closed its Montgomery Mall location permanently, according to a google listing. The store removed all signage a couple weeks back, but remains listed on the Michael Kors website, and Westfield Montgomery directory. The phone number still leads to a Michael Kors recording with temporary hours, but a representative from the Tyson’s location confirmed today that the store has closed.

In July 2020, Reuters reported that American luxury group Capri (Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors, Versace) estimated a 70% loss of sales due to the corona pandemic. The report stated that Capri may permanently close up to 170 stores, mostly Michael Kors, over the next two years. It seems as though the Montgomery Mall Michael Kors location was one of those casualties.
