Victim’s Identity Released as Detectives Investigate Muncaster Mill Road Fatality

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2023, in the area of Muncaster Mill Road and Sycamore Lane in Aspen Hill.

At approximately 7:23 a.m., Montgomery County Police Officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a collision between two vehicles. The investigation by detectives has revealed that the driver of a black 2015 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Muncaster Mill Road when he crossed the center line and struck a silver 2004 Ford Escape that was traveling eastbound on Muncaster Mill Road.

Police Respond to Assault with Box Cutter at Korean Korner

Montgomery County Police responded to a stabbing Thursday evening at the Stoney Mill Square Shopping Center on Veirs Mill Rd. According to MCPD, “On Thursday, January 12, 2023, at approximately 7:30 p.m., MCP officers responded to the Korean Korner in the 12200 block of Veirs Mill Rd. in Silver Spring for the report of an assault that just occurred.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that an adult male suspect and the adult male victim had an argument in the parking lot. The suspect pulled out a box cutter, inflicted lacerations on the victim, and left the scene in a vehicle. The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect has not been apprehended.”

Approximately 50 Firefighters Respond to House Fire in Aspen Hill

Around 50 Montgomery County firefighters responded to a single-family house fire in the 13300blk of Georgia Ave, near Regina Dr, in Aspen Hill on Thursday. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire originated in the basement of the home, which appeared to be abandoned (however power was still connected). The fire was reported by a passerby who reported smoke coming from home. There were no injuries reported.

‘Poke Bowl’ is Coming to Plaza Del Mercado

Maryland-based Poke Bowl, a restaurant serving poke bowls, bubble tea, a variety of appetizers, and more, is coming to 2229 Bel Pre Road in Plaza Del Mercado– replacing Smoothie King, between Pizza Stop and Aldi.

Poke Bowl has five locations in Maryland, primarily in the Baltimore region with one location in Frederick. Signage has just been posted on the window informing shoppers of the restaurant’s impending arrival, but an opening date is now available. Smoothie King, which closed permanently last month after four years at Plaza Del Mercado, has additional Montgomery County locations in Bethesda and Rockville (Fallsgrove and Congressional Plaza), and an upcoming location in Olney.

Smoothie King, which opened at 2229 Bel Pre Road in Plaza Del Mercado in September of 2018, closed permanently last month. Smoothie King will be replaced by Maryland-based Poke Bowl– a restaurant serving poke bowls, bubble tea, a variety of appetizers, and more.

The restaurant tells us, “There’s lots of misconception when it comes to “EggMania”. In American culture eggs based dishes are primarily used during breakfast whereas in popular Indian street food culture, eggs based dishes are made for entrees and served during lunch / dinner and full menu items, not just breakfast. 15 Year Sentence for 7-Eleven Shooting Involving Ex-Boyfriend of Co-Worker

Per the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office: In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the honorable Judge John Maloney has sentenced defendant, Zekale Long, 42, of Silver Spring, to life in prison suspend all but 15 years. Long pleaded guilty on October 27^th, 2022, to Attempted First-Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony Violent Crime.

Judge Maloney handed down the sentence yesterday. It stems from a shooting on June 12, 2022, inside of a convenience store at 14101 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. Long entered the store, argued with a female employee and fired at a male employee, grazing him with a bullet. The investigation by Montgomery County Police revealed Long had been in a previous romantic relationship with the female employee. She had entered into a new relationship, with the victim, about two weeks prior to the June 12^th incident. Long admitted to police that he used a privately manufactured firearm or “ghost gun” that he purchased online and manufactured himself. Assistant State’s Attorney Donna Fenton prosecuted this case.

Gold’s Gym Closes Layhill Center Location

Gold’s Gym closed its Layhill Center location in Silver Spring earlier this month, according to a representative from one of its Rockville locations. We were told the decision was made to not renew the lease at 14348 Layhill Rd.

Gold’s Gym has other Montgomery County locations in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Olney, and two in Rockville (Rockville Town Square and Wintergreen Plaza). The current Germantown location (Fox Chapel) will be closing once the new location opens in the former DSW space in the Germantown Commons shopping center next to Bed Bath & Beyond.

Jersey Mike’s is Coming to Aspen Hill

Jersey Mike’s will be opening a new restaurant in the Northgate Plaza in Aspen Hill. The restaurant, which is currently hiring, will be taking over the location that was formerly home to Body & Brain Tai Chi– between Dunkin’ and Roy Rogers.

Jersey Mike’s was founded as Mike’s Submarines in Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956. Peter Cancro started working at the restaurant in 1968 when he was 14 and the shop was on its third hour. Three years later the shop went up for sale again and with the help of a local high school football coach who was also a banker, Cancro was able to pull together $125,000 to buy it at age 17. He began to franchise the restaurant in 1987 and now has over 2,000 locations with various locations across Montgomery County.

Three New Dunkin’ Locations Are Coming to Montgomery County

Since Inspire Brands acquired Dunkin’ and Baskin Robbins in late 2020 for $11.3 billion, the company has been opening in former bank locations that allow for easy installation of a drive-thru window. Dunkin’ has also aimed for non-traditional development that includes opening in airports and on college campuses, including the University of Maryland, but the three newest Dunkin’ coffee/donut shops that are coming to MoCo will all be in locations that were formally banks.

One of the latest upcoming Dunkin’ locations is currently under construction at the Layhill Center (14328 Layhill Rd) in Silver Spring. The new location, which will have a drive-thru, will be located next to Sole D’Italia, in the space that was formerly home to Truist and BB&T Bank. Dunkin’ also has an upcoming location coming to the Traville Village Center in Rockville. It will be taking over the former Capital One Bank building at 9761 Traville Gateway Dr. We expect more news coming out of the shopping center regarding the former Nantucket’s Reef location very soon. Dunkin’ is also working on an upcoming location coming to the Goshen Crossing Shopping Center in Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village. It will be taking over the former Capital One Bank building at 20000 Goshen Rd.
