A Montgomery County Resident is $1,000,000 richer after claiming a winning lottery ticket she purchased back in April from the 7-Eleven at 12405 Georgia Ave in Wheaton-Glenmont. Full story below courtesy of MD Lottery:

“Although she was chasing a Mega Millions jackpot, a Silver Spring woman is happy to join the game’s millionaires’ club after winning a $1 million second-tier prize in an April drawing. The Montgomery County resident, who said she has chased the jackpot her entire life, gave herself the nickname “Lady Jackpot Chaser” to tell the story of her April 18 Lottery win.


Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating an armed robbery of a Dollar City and More that occurred on Thursday, June 8, 2023. Detectives have released surveillance photos of the suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

The initial investigation has revealed that at approximately 9:25 a.m., an unknown suspect entered the store in the 12300 block of Georgia Avenue and attempted to purchase several items with counterfeit money. When the employee told the suspect that she would not accept the counterfeit money, the suspect became angry and walked to the back of the store. The suspect then removed a package of steak knives from the shelf and returned to the front of the store. Pointing the knives at the employee, the suspect demanded money and the victim’s personal property. The employee complied with the suspect’s demands and the suspect left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash and property.


Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred on Sunday, May 21, 2023, on Veirs Mill Rd. At approximately 5:04 a.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of Veirs Mill Rd. and Newport Mill Rd., for the report of a pedestrian struck.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that an adult male was struck by the driver of a dark blue 2007 Toyota Rav4, as it was traveling eastbound on Veirs Mill Rd. The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The decedent has been identified as 46-year-old Hernan Zuasnabar Cunyas, of Silver Spring.


Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred this morning in Wheaton-Glenmont. According to MCPD, “At approximately 5:04 a.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of Veirs Mill Rd. and Newport Mill Rd., for the report of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian.

For reasons still under investigation, an adult male victim was struck by blue Toyota RAV4, on Veirs Mill Rd.  The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene.


He is no stranger to winning a big Lottery prize, although it’s been a long time. He told Lottery officials that he played Powerball for the first time 30 years ago in Washington D.C. and won $100,000. His Montgomery County Lottery retailer is celebrating, too. The Glenmont Sunoco at 12321 Georgia Avenue will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for its role in selling a $50,000-winning Pick 5 ticket.


Per MCPD: Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Community Action Team have arrested 20-year-old Alan Garcia of Silver Spring and a juvenile female following a community complaint in the shopping center located at 12345 Georgia Avenue in Glenmont.

On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at approximately 4:50 p.m., officers were patrolling the shopping center in response to a community complaint made by business owners and residents of the area, regarding on-going alcohol, drug and disorderly conduct offenses occurring in the shopping center. Officers observed Garcia and the juvenile female in a stairwell to the rear of 12331 Georgia Ave., which is an area of the shopping center that is marked with posted “No Trespassing” signs. Upon approaching them, officers observed drug paraphernalia in their possession. Garcia attempted to run, but he was quickly apprehended and placed under arrest.


Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a collision involving an overturned vehicle on Friday morning in Glenmont. According to MCPD, “At approximately 10:50 a.m., a MCPD officer came across a two-vehicle collision in the area of Randolph Road and Glenmont Circle. The driver of the striking vehicle fled on foot after his vehicle overturned. A brief foot pursuit ensued.  The adult male was quickly apprehended and transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.  No additional injuries have been reported.”

Café Edison, an in-school, student-run restaurant at Thomas Edison High School of Technology, is now open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays through Friday, May 19. The restaurant will be closed through spring break, but will reopen on Wednesday, April 12.

Breakfast is served at 8:40 and 9 a.m., and lunch at 12:05 p.m. and 12:20 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 240-740-2024 or emailing Hospitality and Tourism teacher Jason Potyk. Cash or check payments are acceptable. The menu is available on the flyer, available on the school website (via QR code). Café Edison gives students an opportunity to gain valuable, real-world skills in a working restaurant. Students greet and seat guests. They also cook and serve the meals, bus the tables and handle restaurant clean up. Edison High School is located at 12501 Dalewood Dr. in Silver Spring.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a two vehicle collision on Randolph Road, near Glenmont Circle, around 8pm on Wednesday, March 22. According to public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, one sedan overturned onto its roof and only minor injuries were reported. Both involved vehicles were towed from the scene.
