Originally built in 1952, the Glenmont Shopping Center, known for its iconic “Arcade” sign, holds fond memories for county residents who grew up between the 1950s and 1990s. However, over the past two decades, many have called for the area’s redevelopment. Enter The Montgonion, a satirical news website known for its fictional and humorous takes on Montgomery County’s current events, social issues, and politics. The site decided to “step in” with a tongue-in-cheek update on the future of the shopping center.

The second annual Buckets and Beats: Silver Spring Youth Block Party will take place on Friday, Sept. 27, from 2-6 p.m. at Veterans Plaza, featuring a free 3-on-3 basketball tournament, soccer skills station, arts activities, a live DJ, and free food for youth, with the event aimed at fostering positive youth engagement in the community. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the area of the 300blk of University Blvd E, near E Franklin Av, for smoke near Eastern Middle School. Once there, it was realized the smoke was coming from the school building that was home to Joann Leleck Elementary School at 710 Beacon Rd. in Silver Spring.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “The Honorable Harry Storm has sentenced defendant, Kaleab Berhanu, 21, of Baltimore, to two consecutive life sentences plus 20 years for the shooting death of 20-year-old Carlos Carter. The sentencing hearing was held late Friday, September 20, 2024. Assistant State’s Attorneys Peter Larson and Thea Zumwalt prosecuted this case.” (more…)
