David Leavy, the chief corporate operations and communications officer for Discovery Communications, told Bezos that he should not consider Discovery’s decision to move as a knock against Maryland. “I’m happy to champion Montgomery County whether it’s to Amazon or anybody else.” Leavy said.

The article also states that the former White Flint location is believed to be among the prospective sites. Leavy does not think that MoCo included the old Discovery space in their bid.

I don’t think “cursed” is the right word for it, but there are definitely locations in the county that have not had the best of luck with long-lasting businesses.

With that said, I’d like to discuss the one location that I feel may be the unluckiest of them all. 654 Centerpoint Way in the Kentlands in Gaithersburg. This location has been home to The Last Mango, Zodiac Grill, Tony and James, 44 Sports Bar and Grill, and most recently Largent’s Restaurant and Bar.

Bloomberg L.P.’s Tyler Cowen writes about the differences between the three D.C. area finalists (Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, and Montgomery County, mentioning Silver Spring and White Flint as examples of potential landing spots for the new Amazon headquarters.

He notes that even though the distance between NoVa and D.C. is similar to the distance between MoCo and D.C., the commute is made much easier by the public transit available in MoCo.

“Today I am announcing plans for a new Discovery global real estate strategy and footprint.

Chief among these changes, we have made the decision to move our global headquarters to New York City. We have therefore made the difficult decision to reduce our footprint in Maryland over time, with the ultimate closure and sale of our One Discovery Place headquarters building in Silver Spring, expected in 2019.”
