Driver of Van Who Caused Metrobus to Crash Into Jewelry Store Thursday Morning Has Been Charged With Four Infractions, According to Police

WMATA Transit Police tweeted the following regarding the Metrobus crash into a jewelry store in weekend this morning: “Driver of van that caused morning Metrobus accident charged with 4 infractions: (1) unsafe lane change, (2) failure to control speed to avoid a collision, (3) improper right turn, and (4) failure to wear corrective lens. Thx to @mcpnews and @mcfrs for their on-the-scene support.”

At approximately 9:30am on Thursday morning there was a collision involving a Metrobus that closed Veirs Mill Rd between Reedie Dr and University Blvd, according to Montgomery County Police. Bus Crashes Into Jewelry Store in Wheaton

A collision involving a Metro bus has Veirs Mill Rd shut down between Reedie Dr and University Blvd, according to Montgomery County Police. Drivers should expect delays and are advised to seek alternate routes. The incident occurred at the Jewelry Buyers at 2575 Ennalls Ave in Wheaton around 9:30am on Thursday, March 2. Per Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services: “Montgomery County Fire Rescue is currently active at an incident located on the corner of Veirs Mill Road and Ennalls Avenue. Bus versus car with the bus into a building. 3 people transported with non-life threatening injuries.” We will post an update when additional information is available. Montgomery County Public Libraries Celebrates ‘Read Across America Week’ March 2-6 with Volunteers Pairing with Children in Reading Program

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Public Libraries is partnering with the Jewish Council for the Aging Heyman Interages Center (JCA), or Interages, to celebrate “Read Across America Week” by providing a reading program at selected branches. The special week is March 2-6. The one-on-one program will pair JCA volunteers with children between kindergarten and third grade. The volunteers have been recruited, vetted and trained by JCA in communication and intergenerational interaction. Reading sessions will be at the Gaithersburg and Wheaton libraries.

“Getting our young people inspired to read is one of the most important things we can do in providing great educations for our upcoming generations,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Having a reading partner often is the key to making reading fun and interesting. The Read Across America program in which Montgomery County Public Libraries partners with the Jewish Council for the Aging is a model program we should duplicate wherever possible—including right at home.”

Metro and Montgomery County emergency responders hold full-scale emergency exercise at Wheaton Station on Sunday, Feb. 26

Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) and Montgomery County emergency responders will conduct a full-scale emergency response exercise at Wheaton Station on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023 from opening until approximately 2 p.m. Members of the public may notice a large number of emergency vehicles on site. Please be assured that this is only an exercise.

The exercise will take place inside the tunnel between Wheaton and Forest Glen and will simulate real-world conditions to test the operational and evacuation coordination, and interagency communication between MTPD, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, Montgomery County Police, Metrorail and Metrobus operations staff, on-scene responders and support personnel.

Entries Can Now Be Submitted for Seventh Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival Poster Contest

Per Montgomery County: Entries are now being accepted for the Seventh Annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival poster contest. The winning design will be used on all promotional materials for the parade and festival, which will take place in Downtown Wheaton on Sunday, Oct. 15. The winner will receive a $500 commission. The parade and festival will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 15 in and around the Marian Fryer Town Plaza in the Wheaton Triangle Business District. The theme for the 2023 parade is “Art to Action: Before we can make our world a better place, we need a vision of the future that inspires us to act.

Montgomery Planning Releases Wheaton Downtown Study

Per Montgomery Planning: The Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), briefed the Montgomery County Planning Board Feb. 16 on its Wheaton Downtown Study, which examines the progress and challenges toward fulfilling the 2012 Wheaton Central Business District (CBD) and Vicinity Sector Plan and offers specific recommendations to inform decision makers on advancing the sector plan’s implementation. Montgomery Planning is now sending the completed study to the Montgomery County Council.

MCPD: Seven Juveniles Charged with Auto Theft After Crashing Stolen Vehicle

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have charged seven juveniles, one 14-year-old, three 15-year-olds, two 16-year-olds, and one 17-year-old, with auto theft. On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at approximately 7:30 a.m., 4th District officers responded to the 12300 block of Livingston St. for the report of a suspicious situation.

Detectives from the Auto Crime Enforcement Section (ACES) were in the area conducting proactive enforcement, with 4th District patrol, in response to Hyundai and Kia theft trends and responded to the location as well. The preliminary on scene investigation revealed that officers observed a red Hyundai Sonata leaving the area at a high rate of speed. Officers determined that the Sonata was reported stolen from Washington, D.C.

Wheaton High School Principal’s Appeal to Overturn Cancellation of Wrestling Season is Denied; Second Appeal to Follow

Wheaton High School Principal Joshua Munsey announced in a letter to parents of students on the Wheaton wrestling team that an appeal of the MPSSAA decision to not allow Wheaton High School wrestlers to participate in any post-season series has been denied. In the letter to parents, Munsey stated the following: “Yesterday, I represented the Wheaton High School wrestlers in a hearing appealing the MPSSAA Sanction that Wheaton High School wrestlers are not allowed to participate in the post-season series. This afternoon, I received the attached letter denying our appeal. Also this afternoon, I followed the steps outlined in this letter to appeal this decision.” Principal Munsey has told us that he filed for the initial appeal as soon as he knew he was able to do so. He has also followed the steps for a second appeal that is likely to be heard this week. The full letter denying the appeal can be seen below.

Wheaton High School Principal Appeals Decision to Cancel Wrestling Team’s Season

On February 2, 2023, Wheaton High School principal Joshua Munsey sent a letter to the WHS community informing them of a violation of Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) athletic rules and regulations by the Wheaton wrestling program.

In the letter, it was explained that there was an allegation of an ineligible student-athlete competing for Wheaton High School. The wrestling program was paused on January 27th and a comprehensive investigation confirmed the allegation. This led to the cancellation of the remaining part of the season for the entire Wheaton wrestling program, per regulations outlined in the MPSSAA handbook. According to NBC4, the head coach of the wrestling team knowingly broke the rules “but thought the consequences would come down on him and not the varsity, junior varsity and girls teams.” He is no longer employed by MCPS.

Police Investigating Triple Shooting

Per MCPD: “Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Investigative Section are investigating the shooting of three adult male victims that occurred on Sunday, February 12, 2023, in front of 2425 Reedie Drive in Wheaton.

At approximately 3:27 a.m., 4th District officers responded to the location for the report of a shooting. Officers arrived at the scene and located an adult male victim, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided life saving measures to the victim until Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel arrived. The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
