The Wheaton Urban District and Montgomery County Recreation will celebrate Valentine’s Day with “I Love Wheaton” an afternoon filled with free outdoor fun and activities from noon-4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, at Marian Fryer Town Plaza, located at 2424 Reedie Drive in downtown Wheaton, MD.

On Monday, January 24, 2022, three Baltimore City Firefighters were tragically killed while fighting a row house fire. Lieutenant Paul Butrim, Firefighter/Paramedic Kelsey Sadler & Firefighter/Paramedic Kenneth Lacayo were engaged in an interior attack of the fire when a significant portion of the home suddenly collapsed. Baltimore Firefighter John McMaster is currently hospitalized with critical injuries.Firefighter/Paramedic Kenneth Lacayo was a Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad Life Member and graduated from Wheaton High School. In addition to his service with the Baltimore City Fire Department, Kenny had volunteered in Wheaton for almost 11 years.

The Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad released a statement remembering Kenny:


A fire on the 2600 block of Harris Avenue in Wheaton required approximately 65 firefighters early this morning, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer.

The initial dispatch was at 2:30am for a heavy fire at a 2-story home in Wheaton. Four occupants were able to get out without injuries, but the family dog, which was located on the second floor, did not survive.

Eater’s DC site recently released a list of “15 Standout Thai Restaurants Around DC” touting the diverse selection of Thai restaurants that show off the variety of dishes and traditions the Southeast Asian nation has to offer.


Back in November of 2020, we let you know that Jongro BBQ, a popular New York Korean BBQ restaurant, is opening up shop at Wheaton Mall. The latest update we have received from Westfield Wheaton (this past October) is that the restaurant is expected to open in January, 2022.

On January 6th at 10am, the restaurant will have an ABS hearing for the alcohol license application on behalf of Jongro BBQ Corporation for a Class B, Beer, Wine, and Liquor License, On Sale Only, for the premises known as JongRo BBQ.


The Art and Walkability Project is asking for local artists who are residents of Maryland to submit qualifications to paint an outdoor mural celebrating Downtown Wheaton and its variety of cultures. Three semi-finalists will be paid $1,000 each to prepare design concepts. One finalist will be selected to complete their design and install the mural with a projected budget if $32,000. The completion date for the mural is September 9th, 2022.

Artists can submit their qualifications  starting January 3, 2022 at PublicArtist.org. The deadline to submit is January 31, 2022.
