Scott grew up on a farm near Staunton, VA, listening to the country music greats and reading the classics. As a rock musician, he has put in his 10,000 hours writing and performing songs – in the 90s with his band V-Roys, and later with other musicians including Patty Griffin, Robbie Fulks, Paul Thorn, Robin & Linda Williams, and American Aquarium. Now he has returned to the family farm in Virginia where he divides his time between raising Black Angus cattle and pursuing his musical life.  He said, “Farming & music are similar.  Neither makes you much money because you put all the profits back in the business. Both provide the kind of life you want to live.”

His upcoming appearance at the Arts Barn features an evening with Scott, his guitar and his favorite original songs.  That afternoon he holds a songwriting workshop – “a look at how beef sausage is made.”  Imagery, storytelling, intuition and persistence plus a frank conversation about how the music business has changed so the artist today can reach their fans directly without the record label.  Take advantage of the special combo price of $50 for workshop and concert. Concert alone is $30.

Before diving into the nitty gritty of the event, let’s learn some more about our campus. USG is a full-service campus located in Rockville, Maryland that offers select degree programs from nine Maryland universities. Students apply directly to the university offering their major, but on their application, they choose USG as their preferred campus location. Students still get the same professors, curriculum, and degree as if they went to the institution’s main campus, and a very important point: it won’t say USG on your diploma at all — this is a very common question we get!

Dr. Erwin Hesse and his wife, Andrea Hesse, are the Cofounders of Admissions Gambit, a Montgomery County based college admissions and essay development company. Both were born into humble beginnings with immigrant parents who were carpenters and cleaned houses for a living. Spanish was their first language, and both attended English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in their early elementary school years at MCPS. 

In 2020, Kelvin Quacoe-Dameshie, a former Watkins Mill HS and Montgomery College alumni, began his UMD journey becoming one of the university’s first-ever CPSE graduates.  Upon graduation in 2022, Kelvin remarked how “the program enabled me to gain knowledge in multiple different aspects of technology, and after graduating with my degree, I believed it made me more marketable to employers”.

One of the newest and most exciting undergraduate engineering programs today is Cyber-Physical Systems Engineering (CPSE). This cutting-edge program is offered by the University of Maryland, College Park, A. James Clark School of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) Rockville campus. Its focus on the intersection of computing/communications with the physical world and its specializations in programming, networks, cybersecurity, and machine learning, make it an excellent choice for students interested in pursuing a career in a rapidly growing engineering field.

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) invites prospective students and guests to learn more about the USG campus and the wide variety of degree programs offered by its university partners at the upcoming Undergraduate and Graduate Open House on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

USG is a regional higher education center of the University System of Maryland that offers approximately 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs from nine different state universities, all on one convenient campus in Montgomery County. Undergraduate programs at USG are geared to serving transfer students, as the universities offering the bachelor’s degree programs provide the third and fourth year coursework. Students admitted into the university programs complete their first two years at Montgomery College —where they can benefit from significant cost-savings on a four-year degree via the “2+2 pathway” — or another college or university.
