Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Public Libraries’ (MCPL) Summer Reading Challenge! will begin on Saturday, June 17, at the Rockville Memorial Library with a theme of All Together Now. The slogan represents kindness, friendship and unity.  Children and teens are invited to sign up for the Challenge online or at any MCPL branch. Pre-registration is now open.

The Summer Reading Challenge! runs through Aug. 31. It is sponsored by Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, Inc., and the Washington Nationals baseball team.


The investigation revealed that when Melendez was exiting the store and returning to his vehicle, he began exchanging words with a group of teenagers in front of the store. Once Melendez was inside his vehicle, he produced a pump-action shotgun and pointed it at the teens while making threats. The juveniles dispersed, and Melendez was last seen leaving the area in a black Ford Explorer.


“The Late Night Safety Bill ensures that our restaurants and night life are safe and enjoyable for patrons and neighbors,” said Council President Glass. “This legislation keeps our businesses in direct communication with county government so that we have a comprehensive strategy that promotes safety and strengthens our night time economy.”

“This legislation truly represents a collaborative effort on the executive and legislative side, incorporating public input in addressing public safety challenges related to our businesses open late at night,” said PS Chair Katz. “The safety plans along with the grant funding for facility enhancements ensure our late night businesses have the resources needed to allow for a safe and fun environment for their patrons.”


Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Council will meet on Tuesday, May 16 at 9 a.m. and the meeting will begin with two proclamation presentations. The first proclamation, presented by Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke and Natali Fani-González, commemorates American Craft Beer Week. The second proclamation presentation, led by Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe, recognizes May 2023 as Discover MoCo Month.

Vote expected: At 2 p.m., the Council is expected to nominate and vote to appoint a new Montgomery County Planning Board member. Roberto Piñero has been serving as a temporary acting Planning Board member.


The Montgomery County Police Department will hold a Public Safety Day event on Sunday, May 21, 2023, from 11am-6pm at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds (501 Perry Parkway) in Gaithersburg. According to MCPD, “this is a free event offered to the community to engage with their local law-enforcement officers. There will be plenty of police and fire displays, rides, face paint, community stage performances, food, trucks, and so much more.”

Per MCPD: The body of an adult male recovered along the Potomac River on Monday, April 3, 2023, has been identified. Officers were called to the area south of the Angler’s boat ramp at approximately 2 p.m. for the report of a body in the water. The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and identified as 56-year-old Neil Bernstein of Rockville. Bernstein was reported missing and last seen on Friday, February 17 in Great Falls Park near Macarthur Blvd. on the Maryland side. He was positively identified on Monday, April 10.

Original Missing Person Report: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 56-year-old from Rockville.  Neil Bernstein was last heard from on Friday, February 17, 2023, at approximately 9:53 a.m. He is missing from Twinbrook Parkway in Rockville. Bernstein is approximately 5-feet, 9-inches tall and weighs 150 lbs. He has short grey and brown hair and green eyes.  Police and family are concern for his welfare. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Neil Bernstein is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line). Callers may remain anonymous.
