Montgomery County to Host 26th Juneteenth Celebration with Music, Artistic Performances, Educational Exhibits on Saturday, June 17, in Germantown

The celebration weekend will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 16, at BlackRock when County Executive Marc Elrich leads ceremonies to honor the 2023 winners of the County’s African American Living Legends Awards. The awards honor individuals who are 75 or older and have dedicated their lives to service, advocacy and selfless acts of kindness to their community. BlackRock Center for the Arts is located at 12901 Town Commons Dr. in Germantown.

Police Investigating Fatal Single-Vehicle Collision in Germantown

Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred on Clopper Road between Waring Station Road and Game Preserve Road early Tuesday morning. According to MCPD, “At approximately 12:37 a.m., on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, a Honda was traveling north on Clopper Rd., when for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The adult male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

MCPS: Longview Students Compete in TRYathlon

For the third year, students at Longview School, in Germantown, participated in the TRYathlon, a whole school event celebrating the hard work and dedication of its students with complex physical and intellectual disabilities. Sixty-six students cycled, walked and performed other mobility skills with the help of their adaptive equipment, teachers, therapists and support staff. Longview also welcomed many parents and students from nearby Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary School, who celebrated the great work and dedication of students. The event concluded with a medal ceremony.

Longview was originally built in 1950 in Gaithersburg, MD. It opened as one of the first all black schools in Montgomery County and was named the Emory Grove Consolidated Colored Elementary School. The renaming committee selected Longview to represent the “long” distance traveled by the students and the beautiful view seen from the school (Sugarloaf Mountain off in the distance). The school housed a general education population until 1961 when Longview became a special education school for children with disabilities. The original building is still in use and is now known as the Emory Grove Center. In 2001, Longview moved to its current site in Germantown, Maryland.

Signage Up for Charleys Cheesesteaks & Wings in Germantown

Signage is up for Charleys Cheesesteaks & Wings at 19877 Century Blvd in Germantown. Charleys is taking over the location that was previously home to Roll by Goodyear and Yogi Castle in the Shops at Town Center & Century Station shopping center. The restaurant is being opened by the same franchise group that opened a location last year at 405 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg, in the spot that was previously Teriyaki Express. A representative from the store tells us that the opening date is still to be determined.

In March, we reported that signage went up for Charleys Philly Steaks inside of the Germantown Walmart at 20910 Frederick Rd, taking over the space formerly occupied by McDonald’s. No opening date for the Wal-Mart Charleys has been announced.

Mysterious Object Flying Over MoCo Thursday Night Revealed to Be Elon Musk’s Starlink

On Thursday night we were sent multiple videos from readers across Montgomery County informing us of an unidentified flying object in the sky. The lights appear in a long line that Forbes described as “up to 60 in a long line” and they belong to Starlink, one of many satellites operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Starlink provides satellite Internet access coverage to over dozens of countries and eventually aims to provide global mobile phone service following this year. SpaceX started launching Starlink satellites in 2019 and as of earlier this year, consists of over 3,580 mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which communicate with designated ground transceivers. In total, nearly 12,000 satellites are planned to be deployed, with a possible later extension to 42,000. SpaceX announced reaching more than one million subscribers in December of last year. Police and Family Concerned for Missing Germantown Woman

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Investigations Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Shoshana Tzvia Marcus, a missing 24-year-old from Germantown.

Marcus is missing from the 11400 block of Stoney Point Place. She may be traveling to the Baltimore area in a silver 2016 Toyota Corolla, bearing MD license plate, 5DM2382. Marcus is approximately 4-feet, 11-inches tall and weighs 99 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. It is unknown what clothing she was last seen wearing. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Two-Vehicle Collision in Germantown Sends At Least Two People to the Hospital Wednesday Evening

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision involving two vehicles shortly before 7pm on Wednesday evening in the area of Wisteria Drive and Father Hurley Blvd in Germantown.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the collision caused significant damage to two vehicles with one person initially trapped inside one of the cars when it went over an embankment and into a parking lot. At least two trauma patients were evaluated and transported to the hospital with priority 1 (life threatening) and priority 2 (serious) injuries. Some lanes remained blocked as of 8pm. Big Lots to Accept Now-Expired Bed Bath & Beyond Coupons

Discount retailer Big Lots has announced it will be accepting now-expired Bed Bath & Beyond coupons through May 7. Bed Bath & Beyond announced last week that it will close all 360 of its stores and 120 Buy Buy Baby locations and will seek to sell parts of its business. In its filing with the bankruptcy court, the company said that it expected all stores to close by June 30, according to the New York Times. The Gaithersburg Bed Bath & Beyond location closed in 2021 and the Germantown location closed permanently last Sunday. The Rockville location is the only Bed Beth & Beyond store left in MoCo with Buy Buy Baby also having a location in Rockville.

Officer Injured After Being Dragged by Robbery Suspect in Vehicle at Germantown Wegmans

A Montgomery County Police Officer was injured after responding to the Wegmans at 20600 Seneca Meadows Pkwy in Germantown on Thursday, April 27. According to MCPD, the officer responded to the Wegmans for a theft call which led to a brief foot chase between the officer and suspect. The suspect got into his car and attempted to drive away. The officer grabbed hold of the suspect as the suspect sat in the driver’s seat and the suspect began to drive away, briefly dragging the officer. The officer let go, but injured his hand and arm and was was transported to an area hospital as a precaution. The suspect got away.

Watkins Mill Alumna Josepha Mbouma Awarded Fellowship at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE)

Baylor University’s  George W. Truett Theological Seminary is has announced that first-year Truett student Josepha Mbouma is among two students to have been awarded Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE). Mbouma, a native of Cameroon, grew up in Montgomery County, attending Roberto Clemente Middle School in Germantown and Watkins Mill High School in Montgomery Village where she excelled in the classroom and on the basketball court.

The FASPE is awarded to students pursuing professional degrees in business, journalism, law, medicine, theology, and technology as well as to early-career professionals. Through the program, fellows spend two weeks in Germany and Poland visiting Auschwitz and other key historical sites and participating in seminars led by experts in their respective fields of study. Award recipients are able to examine the roles their counterparts played in Germany and elsewhere from 1933-1945. They then draw on historical, cultural, philosophical, literary, and discipline-specific sources to explore the ethical issues facing their respective fields today.

Hughes to Begin $14 Million Interior Work on Germantown Building

Last August we let you know of a joint-venture between Minkoff Development and South Duvall signing a lease with Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES) to build a 140,000 square foot build-to-suit project on Montgomery College’s Germantown Campus. According to a MarylandNewsletters report, Arium AE has pulled a building permit valued at $14 million to work on the interior of the building. Minkoff Development and South Duvall delivered the 140,000 square foot build-to-suit at 19710 Observation Drive, and in October The Hughes Network Systems Sattelite Production Facility broke ground on Monday and will be bringing approximately 300 jobs to Germantown, according to Montgomery County Councilmember and former Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce CEO, Marilyn Balcombe.

The campus currently is home to the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology at Montgomery College (PIC MC) with Holy Cross Germantown Hospital as its anchor tenant. Located at 19710 Observation Drive in Germantown, Maryland, adjacent to the Hughes headquarters complex (11717 Exploration Lane), the new high-tech manufacturing building will house production of Hughes satellite broadband and networking equipment. “This new facility reflects our long-standing commitment to Montgomery County, as a local employer and business leader for more than 50 years and will help Hughes advance our mission of connecting the unconnected around the world with innovative satellite and networking solutions,” said Jim Muir, III, vice president, corporate real estate at Hughes. “We look forward to inviting students from PIC MC to learn and grow with us and continuing to engage with the community where so many of our employees live and work.
