MoCo’s Second Annual AAPI Heritage Month Celebration Takes Place in Germantown on Sunday, May 21

Montgomery County is hosting its second annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. on Sunday, May 21 at Seneca Valley High School. The day will include cultural performances, a health fair, crafts and games for kids, a cultural and community bazaar, food vendors, henna, face painting and more.

This event is being hosted by Montgomery County Government’s Asian American Health Initiative and the Office of Community Partnerships. Seneca Valley is located at 19401 Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown. More information can be found here. The event will feature:

AAHP Community Day 2023 Takes Place May 20 in Germantown

African American Health Program will celebrate the 9th annual AAHP Community Day on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 9 am to 2 pm at Montgomery College, BioScience Center, Germantown campus, 20200 Observation Drive, Germantown, MD.

This year’s event will include a walk/run/bike activity, which will begin at 7:45 am. AAHP Community Day 2023 will also include an interactive discussion with youth, parents, and the community on security, change, and wellness. In addition, there will be pertinent workshops, physical activities (e.g., Zumba, line dancing, etc.), fun activities for children and youth, a host of exhibitors, and something of interest for all ages. ‘The Man Behind the Stations on the Metropolitan Branch Railroad’ Presentation May 20 in Germantown

Per the Germantown Historical Society: On Saturday, May 20 at 3pm at the Germantown Library Susan Cooke Soderberg will be giving a PowerPoint presentation on: The Man Behind the Stations on the Metropolitan Branch Railroad as part of the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Metropolitan Branch of the B & O Railroad. 150 years ago on May 25, 1873 trains began running across Montgomery County. The coming of the railroad changed the agriculture, the economy and the society of the County. By 1893 the line had 18 stops between Washington D. C. and Point of Rocks.

Most of these stops had a station house for the ticket master and waiting passengers – some large and fancy, some small and plain. All but one of these station houses were designed by noted architect E. Francis Baldwin. Five of these buildings still exist and are preserved with historic designation on what is now known as the MARC Brunswick Line. The Architect E. Francs Baldwin is renown for designing many buildings in a variety of styles from the Catholic Cathedral in Savannah, Georgia to the Power House in Baltimore. His attention to detail extended even to the waiting shelters at the train stops. 14-Year-Old Elijah Miles Has Passed Away Due to Injuries Suffered After Being Struck By Driver in Germantown on Tuesday Night

14-year-old Elijah Miles has succumbed to the injuries he suffered on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at approximately 8:53pm when he was struck by a driver in the area of Wisteria Drive and Great Seneca Highway, near Seneca Valley High School. According to a GoFundMe organized by a friend of the family, Elijah was in 8th grade and a student at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown and has been described as “full of life and a giving child.” Donations can be made here to help the family with costs surrounding funeral arrangements.

Per MCPD: On Tuesday night, 5th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of Wisteria Dr. and Great Seneca Hwy. for the report of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian. The preliminary investigation by detectives has determined that a black Acura TSX was traveling northbound on Wisteria Drive, when for reasons still under investigation, the driver struck the 15-year-old male victim (it is now known that the victim, Elijah Miles, was 14-years old), who was crossing the roadway in a westbound direction. Elijah was then transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Investigative Section are investigating a theft that occurred on April 10, 2023. Detectives have released photos of the suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them.

The preliminary investigation by detectives revealed that the victim was at the TJMaxx store in the 20900 block of Frederick Rd., when she was approached by two suspects, who asked her if she spoke Spanish. When the victim said that she did, the suspects asked for directions to a church in the area that helps immigrants.

Harriet Tubman Journey to Freedom Statue on Display at Button Farm in Germantown, Special Program on Saturday, May 13, as Montgomery County Hosts ‘Journey to Freedom History Day’

Per Montgomery County: The Harriet Tubman: The Journey to Freedom statue will be the centerpiece as Montgomery County hosts “Journey to Freedom History Day” from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday May 13, at the Button Farm Living History Center in Germantown. Montgomery County Executive, Marc Elrich will speak at the free event, which is being presented by the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, the Menare Foundation Inc., Heritage Montgomery and Montgomery History.

At noon on May 13, Ranger Angela Crenshaw will host a talk on Harriet Tubman’s work on the Underground Railroad and screen the documentary Harriet Tubman: Vision of Freedom. At 1 p.m., County Executive Elrich and members of the County Council will present a proclamation in recognition of the event. At 2 p.m., Capitol Tap and District Tap will share a dance performance about Ms. Tubman’s coded letter. The afternoon will conclude with Lesley Younge leading a story time for kids reading from her new book A-Train Allen. Throughout the event, Montgomery History will host a history table of information.

At approximately 8:53 p.m., 5th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of Wisteria Dr. and Great Seneca Hwy. for the report of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian.

KPOT Korean BBQ and Hot Pot Opens in Germantown on Sunday

Last summer we let you know that KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot will be opening a second MoCo location, in Germantown, following the 2018 opening of its Rockville location (the Rockville location is not associated with the Germantown location). KPot has taken over the space previously occupied by Honey Pig at 19727 Frederick Rd #1337. Honey Pig closed permanently in November of 2021 after five years at the location. KPOT has announced that it will officially open on Sunday, May 14th, via a sign on its door (photo below).

According to KPot, the restaurant was started by four friends from different backgrounds who decided to share their mixed cuisine over the same table. KPot combines traditional Asian hot pot with Korean BBQ flavors. Hot pot, also known as “soup-food” or “steamboat,” is a communal pot of simmering broth that is stuffed with raw ingredients like meat and vegetables to cook in the pot.

19-Year-Old From Germantown Killed in Single-Vehicle Collision; Collision Reconstruction Unit Investigating

Montgomery County Police issued a press release Wednesday with additional information on a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred early Tuesday morning in Germantown. The decedent, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, has been identified as 19-year-old Samuel Isaac Castaneda, of Germantown. According to a GoFundMe launched to help with funeral expenses, “Sam was the light of his families lives- full of jokes and fun and always keeping the party going. If you knew Sam, you know exactly the type of guy he was. He was and will continue to be amazing.” Castaneda graduated in the top 25 of his class at Northwest High School in 2021.

Additional information per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, on Clopper Rd. between Waring Station Rd. and Game Preserve Rd. At approximately 12:37 a.m., 6th District officers and Montgomery County Fire rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a single-vehicle collision.

Update: 15-Year-Old Hospitalized With Life—Threatening Injuries After Being Struck by Driver in Germantown

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and Montgomery County Police responded to a collision involving a pedestrian Tuesday night in Germantown. According to MCPD, “at approximately 8:53 p.m., 5th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area Wisteria Dr. and Great Seneca Hwy. for the report of traffic collision involving a pedestrian.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 15-year-old male was crossing Wisteria Dr. after Great Seneca Hwy., when for reasons still under investigation he was struck by an Acura. The victim was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
