Asked about the four original digits, the 71-year-old said they were once his house number.
“It was my first house and my first wife,” he said. Accompanying him to Lottery headquarters to collect his prize was his second wife, who proclaimed, “The first wife is out of luck!”
Montgomery County’s commitment to combatting climate change includes trying to inspire residents and businesses to purchase electric vehicles. To make that plan viable, accessibility to EV charging stations is a necessity. The commitment to that aspect of the County’s Climate Action Plan continued on July 23 as six new EV charging stations were dedicated at the Clarksburg Condominium II.
Clarksburg Condominium II is located at 12824 Clarksburg Square Road in Clarksburg. The condominium association website states that residents who register in advance will receive reduced rates for charging their vehicles at the new charging stations.
At approximately 3 a.m., 5th district officers responded to the 7-Eleven on the 12800 block of Clopper Rd. for a robbery that just occurred.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the store employee who stated that a male subject entered the store, ran up behind him, placed a gun to his back and demanded that he open the cash registers and give him money. The employee complied with the suspect’s demands and opened all of the registers.
Power has been restored for over 6,000 residents in the Germantown area after a small animal came into contact with electrical equipment to cause the outage on Sunday afternoon. Power for most residents was restored by Sunday evening, but some retailers in the area were forced to temporarily close due to the outages.
Thousands of residents had to deal with this outage on the hottest day of the year, with temperatures approaching 100 degrees on Sunday afternoon. According to an NBC Washington report, “A spokesperson for FirstEnergy, of which Potomac Energy is a subsidiary, the company couldn’t confirm the exact type of animal that caused the outage, except that it was similar in size to a squirrel.”
Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early Sunday morning on southbound Coastal Highway (Route 1) in the area of Anchors Way, Dewey Beach, DE. On July 24, 2022, at approximately 1:44 a.m., the victim and five of his friends hired a “Lyft” driver to pick them up in Dewey Beach and transport them back to their residence in Bethany Beach. As the group was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway all in the same vehicle, a disagreement occurred between the group and the Lyft operator. The Lyft operator terminated the ride and stopped in the middle of the southbound left lane and demanded all six passengers exit the vehicle.
At this time, a 2016 Toyota Corolla, operated by a 27-year-old male was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane approaching the stopped Lyft vehicle (possibly a white Honda Pilot). As the operator changed lanes to avoid striking the rear of the Lyft vehicle, he failed to see the pedestrian who had just exited the right rear passenger seat and was standing in the roadway. As a result, the left front of Corolla struck the pedestrian. After impact, the Corolla immediately pulled over on the southbound shoulder and came to a controlled stop. The Lyft vehicle fled southbound on Coastal Highway immediately after the crash.
Many of residents and commercial buildings are without power in the Germantown area. According to the statewide power outage map, 4,180 people in Montgomery County are without power, with most presumed to be in the Germantown area. The “Estimated Restoration Time” is 11pm, but the time provided is always the most conservative for the outages that are grouped at this zoom level.
We have been told that many retailers have closed due to the outage, but we don’t have any definitive information on why the outages have occurred. Currently, zip codes 20876, 20874, and 20841 have the highest amount of power outages in the county.
Back in December we let you know that Pizza Hut is moving into the Cloppers Mill shopping center in Germantown. It will be located at 18070 Mateny Rd, between Shoppers and Popeyes. After more than 6 months, construction has started at the restaurant. The location is smaller, so it will likely be similar to the upcoming Pizza Hut location that is taking over part of the former GameStop location in Four Corners, which is also a smaller store.
Last September, David Gibbs (CEO of Pizza Hut parent company Yum Brands), told investors, “We closed a lot of the dine-in stores that didn’t belong on the portfolio over the last 18 months in the United States,” according to a transcript on the financial services site Sentieo. “But for the most part, the stores we have in the portfolio now are good, long-term stores.”
Back in March we let you know of a the third Crumbl Cookies location that will be coming to Montgomery County, as a new store signed on at 277 Kentlands Blvd, next to Panera, in the space that was formerly home to TD Ameritrade. This news came about five months after the upcoming Germantown locationwas announced.
Permanent signage went up at the Germantown location back in March and at the Kentlands location a couple weeks back, which led to many readers asking if the bakery franchise, that offers different freshly baked cookies each week, would be opening soon. We have been told that the Germantown location hopes to open by the end of the summer (August is the goal), but after stopping by the Kentlands location again this week, it looks like there is a lot of work left to be done inside (photo below). We don’t anticipate an opening anytime soon.
Neville Fernando was last seen on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at approximately 8:45 a.m., in the 19700 block of Vaughn Landing Dr.
Fernando is approximately 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has grey and brown hair and brown eyes, and last seen wearing a black baseball cap, white t-shirt and navy pants. Police and family are concerned for his welfare.
Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to 9300 Heather Field Court near Bonny Brook Lane in Damascus on Tuesday at approximately 5:30pm Tuesday evening for a shed fire that caused collateral heat damage to the house, according to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.
According to an update provided on Wednesday morning, the area of origin was a 20’ x 40’ garage and the fire was caused by combustibles that were too close to a recently used lawn mower. There was approximately $100K in damages due to the the shed fire that caused collateral heat damage to the house and vehicle. There were no injuries.
