With 246 of 258 Election Day precincts reporting, Maxwell Uy leads Robert Bass in the race to become Montgomery County Sheriff. As of 1:57pm on Wednesday, Uy had 20,654 (53.52%) votes compared to 18,332 (46.48%) for Bass. The winner will take over for outgoing Sheriff Darren Popkin, who has served in the position since 2010 and announced last year that he will not seek re-election. Prior to his election on November 2, 2010 and re-election in 2014, Sheriff Popkin was the Chief Deputy, second-in-command of the Sheriff’s Office for twelve years.

Uy currently serves as Chief Deputy Sheriff for Montgomery County, in charge of the day to day operations of the Sheriff’s office on behalf of Sheriff Darren Popkin. Per his campaign website, he “worked his way up the ladder after gaining experience in the Criminal Section, Domestic Violence Section (both as a Deputy and supervising Sergeant), and Court & Transportation Section. His experience extends further as a former Montgomery County Public Safety Academy Sergeant and Training Coordinator cooperating with the Montgomery County Police Department.”

Rockville City Police Makes Attempted Murder Arrest in Town Center Shooting

Rockville City Police Detectives have arrested and charged a man with attempted first-degree murder. On July 15, 2022 at 1:45 a.m. officers responded to the 100 block of Gibbs Street for the report of a fight in progress, which was then updated to a shooting. Responding officers located an adult male victim shot three times, he was transported to an area hospital where he continues to recover from his non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation has revealed that a verbal dispute took place between the suspect and the victim, who are known acquaintances of each other. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical fight, the suspect took out a handgun and fired it several times striking the victim. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.

Montgomery County Launches ‘Reducing Food Waste Begins with You’ Campaign

Montgomery County is committed to reducing waste and recycling more as it aims for zero waste. Reducing food waste is a key objective of the County’s Climate Action Plan, which includes preventing and lessening the amount of food waste created.

“It’s sad to think Montgomery County residents and businesses are throwing away roughly 124,000 tons of food scraps a year, when we have residents who do not have regular access to quality, nutritious food,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “We can help reduce food insecurity and the amount of food that is thrown away by buying only what we need and donating excess edible foods to food rescue organizations, food pantries and shelters. This is just part of look out for those who are most in need, something that is key to having a healthy community.”

One Dead After Shooting Involving U.S. Marshals in Gaithersburg

One person is dead after a shooting this morning in Gaithersburg. The incident occurred around 9:20AM on Garth Terrace off of Watkins Mill Road and Travis Lane. According to a report by NBC Washington, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force were attempting to serve a warrant when the shooting occurred. No law enforcement officials were injured.

No other details have been released and the identity of the person killed has not been announced. We will post an update when more information becomes available. A press conference is expected to begin shortly.

Trump-Backed Dan Cox Wins Republican Nomination for Maryland Governor After Defeating Hogan-Backed Kelly Schulz

Delegate Dan Cox, a Republican politician who represents district 4 in the Maryland House of Delegates, defeated former state Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz to win the Republican nomination for Maryland Governor. Cox was endorsed by former President Donald Trump while Schulz was endorsed by Republican Gov. Larry Hogan. With 2043 of 2074 Election Day precincts reporting, Cox has received 132,463 (56.22%) while Shulz has received 94,877 (40.27%). Disbarred Montgomery County attorney Robin Ficker came in third with 5,062 (2.15%) votes. The Associated Press called the election in Cox’s favor at approximately 11pm on Tuesday night.

Cox has stated he has been active in politics since 1980, when he campaigned with his parents for Ronald Reagan. He also worked on the 1996 presidential campaign of Alan Keyes and as an aide to former U.S. Representative Roscoe Bartlett. From 2007 to 2009, he was the President of the Town Commission of Secretary, Maryland, located in Dorchester County. He was the Republican nominee for Dorchester County Circuit Court Clerk in 2006, losing the race to Democratic nominee Michael L. Baker. Co was also the Republican nominee for Maryland’s 8th congressional district in 2016, losing the race to Democratic nominee and state senator Jamie Raskin of Montgomery County.

Shed Fire in Damascus Causes ~100K in Damages

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to 9300 Heather Field Court near Bonny Brook Lane in Damascus on Tuesday at approximately 5:30pm Tuesday evening for a shed fire that caused collateral heat damage to the house, according to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.

According to an update provided on Wednesday morning, the area of origin was a 20’ x 40’ garage and the fire was caused by combustibles that were too close to a recently used lawn mower. There was approximately $100K in damages due to the the shed fire that caused collateral heat damage to the house and vehicle. There were no injuries.

With almost all Election Day precincts reporting, below you will see the results of the Non-partisan Montgomery Founty Board of Education races as of 10:00am on Wednesday, July 20:

District 1: Grace Rivera Oven (31,926, 44.89%) has a big lead with 48 of 53 Election Day precincts reporting in District 1. Esther Wells (19,824, 27.87%) is in second place, Alexander Fahmy (10,074, 14.16%) is in third, and Jay Guan (9,302, 13.08%) comes in fourth.

Former Washington Commander Deshazor Everett Pleads Guilty to Reckless Driving in Car Crash That Killed His Girlfriend, a Montgomery County Native

On Tuesday, former Washington Commander safety Deshazor Everett plead guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving in the collision that resulted in the death of his girlfriend, Olivia Peters. The crash occurred on December 23, 2021 on Gum Spring Road near Ticonderoga Road in Loudoun County, VA. According to the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, Everett was driving his 2010 Nissan GT-R more than double the speed limit at the time of the incident. Peters was taken to StoneSprings Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Peters, 29, was a 2010 graduate of Good Counsel in Olney and a native of Rockville, MD, where she lived until moving to Las Vegas, NV.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Thursday night on Gum Spring Road.

With 246 of 258 election day precincts reporting, David Blair (28,961, 39.63%) holds a slight lead over incumbent Marc Elrich (27,770, 38.00%) in the Montgomery County Executive Democratic primary. Hans Riemer is currently in third (14,911, 20.40%) and Peter James in fourth (1,445, 1.98%). Reardon Sullivan (6,840, 63.58%) leads the Republican primary over Shelly Skolnick (4,949, 36.42%).
